I love Jeff Vandermeer's hit 2014 novel "Kill Yourself"
Annihilation is not a comedy but this scene is
its kind of sad that bugs are so weak. it dishonors their noble biology. i guess this is is why crustaceans are so admirable. imagine for a moment, an unsquishable bug. such is the way of the crab
If you saw it, you would have run as far away from that place as you could.
Goodbye. Fucking old man. Stupid fucking old man.
my southern reach rabbit throughline:
the lab repurposes old camera tech to create new ones -> they tie the new cameras to rabbits which either mutate, die, or disappear -> jack’s early attempts at hypnosis trigger violent compulsions -> jack calls john “control” and begins hypnotizing him from a young age -> control’s first act as director is to review the rabbit footage -> biologists studying the rabbits begin exhibiting violent compulsions -> whitby studies the rabbit cameras -> whitby meets his double and compulsively kills it -> whitby compulsively paints control as a rabbit -> the biologists associate the rabbits with whitby -> jack uses control’s memories to hypnotize lowry -> control mutates into a rabbit -> lowry meets whitby’s double and compulsively eats it -> the rabbits eat each other and abandon their cameras -> the lab repurposes old camera tech to create new ones
“the first and the last” yeah the first and the last time i want a whole third of a book from lowry’s perspective
The Ghostbird and The Biologist
“I am a copy, John. But not a perfect one. I’m not her. She’s not me. Do you know what I’d say if I came face-to-face with her?”
“What?”
“I’d tell her, ‘You made a lot of fucking mistakes. You made a lot of mistakes, and yet I love you. You’re a mess and a revelation, but I can’t be any of that. All I can do is work out things myself.’ And then, knowing her, she’d probably look at me funny and take a tissue sample from me.”
nastiest trick in the book is getting you genuinely deeply attached to a character whose name sounds fucking stupid in any other context. this WILL happen to you at some point in your life.
A little over halfway through Authority and this is every conversation between the Voice and Control
"Jump," said a voice in his head.
when the fruit is strangling
happy topographical anomaly tuesday! dont forget to hypnotise your researchers and take them to be swallowed by horrors beyond human comprehension!
let’s get manipulated by mama :(
biologist from southern reach they could never make me hate you
urghh attempting to draw her non-glooped form because there's something else i want to make with her...
This is what I was imagining when the biologist came across that dolphin in annihilation
"But the longer I stared at it, the less comprehensible the creature became. The more it became something alien to me, and the more I had a sense that I knew nothing at all—about nature, about ecosystems. There was something about my mood and its dark glow that eclipsed sense, that made me see this creature, which had indeed been assigned a place in the taxonomy—catalogued, studied, and described—irreducible down to any of that. And if I kept looking, I knew that ultimately I would have to admit I knew less than nothing about myself as well, whether that was a lie or the truth."
