summary: The brainy bunch have been together on earth for a few months now, and the friendship between the 4 humans is slowly but surely growing. Today, Eleanor asked Tahani to come along to an American themed bar. Unbeknownst to Tahani, it was about to be much more than a simple night out.
word count: 4291
“Alright, class. I have an announcement to make. Due to Simone being sick last week, we are behind on analysing and processing the data from the brain tests, so therefore I have to cancel our lesson for tomorrow” Chidi says, while wiping his chalkboard clean.
Eleanor being Eleanor, didn’t even pretend to be subtle. She shot her hand up for Jason to high-five her, that familiar smirk already forming. “No offense, but I’ve been mentally checked out since Tuesday morning, so you won’t hear me complaining about an early weekend. She wiggled her eyebrows before adding, "I say we celebrate it with shots and mediocre music in a bar, who’s with me?"
Tahani pulled a face at the word bar. The last time Eleanor dragged them all out, Tahani ended up surrounded by sticky tables, greasy food, and the unmistakable scent of cheap liquor. No one else seemed bothered, least of all Eleanor. But before she could express any kind of response, Jason spoke first.
His smile faded slightly. “Ah, I’m sorry, Eleanor. I gotta watch the Jaguars game at like one in the morning. It’s the worst, every game is so late here.”
Eleanor noticed his genuine disappointment for missing their night out, and so she patted his shoulder for reassurance. “It’s okay, buddy. If you promise you’ll join next time.”
Jason brightened a bit and nodded in enthusiasm. “You’ve got it dawg! I wouldn't want to miss it.”
Eleanor zipped up her bag, then tossed a wink toward Simone. “Come on, babe. A few drinks before you drown yourself in test results?”
Simone, long desensitised to Eleanor’s flirting, shot her a knowing smile. “I’d love to, but not tonight.”
Eleanor groaned in response as she dropped her forehead on the table in front of her, “Just my luck, being stuck with a bunch of party poopers. You guys are no fun, you know that?” Even though her voice was meant to seem snarky rather than genuinely irritated, Tahani couldn’t help but notice a hint of disappointment in her tone. How strange.
It was quiet for a moment, which Tahani took as an opportunity to pack her stuff. The handle of Tahani’s designer bag rattled against the wooden table and it took Eleanor out of her daze. She lifted her head up, to lock eyes with the brunette. Tahani lifted her chin, trying to look thoughtful rather than like someone plotting an escape route. She wasn’t a big drinker, and nights out with Eleanor tended to escalate quickly.
“Oh come on, hot stuff,” Eleanor said, while leaning in and nudging her shoulder. “You gotta get out there, meet new people. Not that they’ll be cooler than me—obviously—but still. I promise it’ll be fun.”
Tahani rolled her eyes, though the corner of her mouth twitched. As much as she dreaded another night in a bar, the idea of Eleanor going alone sat even worse. And, if she was honest, she did enjoy Eleanor’s company, chaos and all.
“Fine,” she said with a sigh. “I’ll join you. But on two conditions. One: we leave together, and I’m making sure you get back to your motel safely.”
Eleanor muttered something under her breath, which almost certainly sounded like an insult.
“I didn’t know you offered babysitting services between galas,” she said. “But sure. Deal.”
Tahani gave a soft laugh. “And two: I need to stop by my Heirbnb first. I can’t exactly show up to a night out in a day dress, so if you’ll just—”
But Eleanor didn’t bother listening. She grabbed Tahani’s hand and pulled her out of the chair with surprising enthusiasm. Tahani shot her a sharp look, already forming a protest, but Eleanor didn’t give her that grace either.
She turned her head around, and made a beeline for the exit, while dragging her friend with her. Tahani collected her coat and bag with as much dignity as she could muster. And she gave their friends a small wave of goodbye; Simone mouthed a ‘good luck’ her way.
This will definitely be interesting.
-
As the two women were standing outside of the university building, waiting for a cab that Tahani ordered, Eleanor was awfully quiet. It wasn’t completely out of character for her to swing between being the jokester or indifferent, but she was rarely lost in her thoughts.
Eleanor, seemingly noticing her friend’s glance her way, took the opportunity to call her out on it. “Listen, I know I’m a spectacular sight to look at….”, she began, while a smirk appeared on her face.
“Eleanor….” Tahani said, followed by a slight sigh. It was quite remarkable, how she always managed to flirt or joke her way out of conversations, and she hadn’t even said a word yet.
“What? I don’t mind. Especially coming from you.” Tahani gave her an eye roll in response, and she waved her off with a flick of her wrist, before continuing herself. “Why did you want to go out tonight? I haven’t seen you so eager before.”
Eleanor shrugged, “No reason. Do I need one? What if I just felt like letting loose with my friend?”
Tahani’s cheeks turned a little pink and she averted her gaze for a moment, almost shyly. Perhaps it was her intense desire to be liked that got a boost, someone calling her a friend, specifically coming from Eleanor, or maybe both, that made her a little giddy inside. Not that it mattered, she appreciated the sentiment nonetheless.
“I suppose you’re right.” she said, a faint smile forming on her lips. If she was quite honest, Eleanor’s words were not convincing her in the slightest. Nonetheless, prying the answer out of her when she’s clearly not in the mood for it, will only result in an unpleasant night out.
The blonde gave a small nod in response, before seemingly trying to change the subject. “Any idea how long it’s going to take before your driver gets here? I’m freezing my ass off!”
The small breeze, one that was pleasant and warranted after being kept indoors for a full day, had been replaced with an icing strong wind. Tahani’s legs were, as always, bare and visible. While her coat fell over her lilac sundress, it wasn’t enough to stop the goosebumps from appearing on her skin.
Just as she was about to open her mouth and check her cellphone for any updates, a black Mercedes stopped right in front of them. The driver tried to hold the door for the two women, as any gentleman would, but he was beaten to it. “M’lady” Eleanor said in an obnoxious accent. Tahani huffed in a slightly undignified way, not surprised in the slightest, before she slipped into the backseat of the car. She gave a small smile towards the driver in recognition, and watched as Eleanor joined her.
The ride to the bar was quiet, which didn’t happen that often. There was not a silence that Tahani Al-Jamil couldn’t fill up. But Eleanor had made it clear, without words, she wasn’t in the mood for chit chats. She was slightly slouching in the seat, her attention locked on her phone. So Tahani was not going to take her chances, and instead spent her time gazing out the window, admiring the various skyscrapers that they passed by.
-
“Ma’am, you’ve arrived at your destination”, the driver’s voice got her out of her focused gaze. He opened his car door, once again with no avail. Eleanor decided she didn’t need the help, because she immediately slipped her phone into her jeans pocket and practically bolted out of the vehicle. Tahani followed right behind her. For someone with such little legs, it was quite the challenge to keep up the pace.
As they stepped into the bar, Tahani couldn’t help but cringe a little. The extensive American decoration in every corner of the room, the smell of cheap alcohol and not to mention the disgusting carpet on the floor. The green-brownish color added nothing to the space, and it didn’t do her brand new designer pumps any justice either.
Eleanor, on the other hand, seemed utterly pleased with the sight in front of her. It must feel like home to her. Not that she could fault her for that, she has had her fair share of homesickness the past few weeks. That sentiment only included England of course, her home country. And even if her heart ached for her family, just the tiniest bit, she wouldn’t have admitted it to anyone.
The two women settled across from each other, a table close to the window. Eleanor basically shoved the menu into her hands. If the decor told her anything, she knew she couldn’t suspect a world class meal for the evening. So she braced herself before opening the folder.
Good heavens!
Tahani’s nose wrinkled in disgust at the sight before her. Each meal came with a picture alongside it. It was worse than she had imagined it, and even worse than the food in the bar from 2 weeks ago. It’s very disconcerting that anyone willingly eats this, let alone enjoy it.
Eleanor followed her friend’s concerned look at the menu in front of her. “That double burger with mushrooms and mustard? It’s delicious babe, you should try it” she exclaimed, while pointing her index finger at the blurry photograph.
“I’m quite alright.” She answered, eyeing the greasy looking meal with the same look of disgust she gave it earlier.
“Suit yourself,” the blonde shrugged.
When the server came around to take their orders, Tahani ordered a homemade lemonade, and Eleanor went with a whiskey sour. “Emphasis on whiskey, gorgeous” she had added with a wink, much to Tahani’s annoyance. No class.
“And get me one of these too” Eleanor jabbed a finger at a picture on the menu, “A portion of French fries to share, and some fried pickles for my friend over here.” Before flashing a polite smile to the waitress’ way.
Tahani hadn’t even bothered objecting to it, at least not verbally. It would have been a lie, had she stated that she wasn’t appalled by this atrocious place and its attempt at cuisine. Not everyone is destined to achieve her level of sophistication and taste, after all. But, she was slowly but surely learning to accept other lifestyles outside of her own. And taking one glance at her friend seated across from her, there was at least someone delighted to be here.
“So, just between us girls tonight…”, Eleanor began, while sipping from her straw. “You were going to tell me more about your reunion with Larry, right? Please tell me you banged him last night!”
“Ow! What?” Eleanor said, while rubbing the spot Tahani had just hit with her palm.
“Must you always be so crude?” she rolled her eyes a little, before continuing. “But, to answer your question. No, we did not.”
“Wait, why not? Heck, I know I would. Once, while I was dating this guy, who’s name I cannot remember, not that it matters anyway. And one night we were at this fancy place. Guess who I ran into? my ex boyfriend Richard! He looked so hot, even hotter than while we were dating. Safe to say that me and the first dude did not get past our second date.”
Tahani hesitated slightly before speaking. She did not want to overstep, but Eleanor seemed genuinely interested in her love life. Or well, the lack thereof at the moment.
“While we were together, which had been for a brief period anyway, we had a pleasant time. Larry was and still is a perfect gentleman. He was considerate, gentle and supportive of everything I’ve accomplished in life. It might be a tad embarrassing to say, but he is the only man I’ve ever felt comfortable around, safe even. Maybe it’s due to our similar upbringings, and our resentment towards our siblings that made us connect so well.”
“But?”
Tahani averted her gaze, looking out the window for a moment.
“I just haven’t felt that same spark as before. Maybe we drifted apart for a reason, or maybe it’s my new revelations about life that made me see things in a different light. I sought after relationships to fill a void inside of me. The slightest bit of attention from a man, most men who looked my way really, and I would cave.” She had to take a breath before continuing on. “All of my self worth and validation comes from others, and especially from my partners.”
Her face flashed, a bit embarrassed to have overshared. She wasn’t sure how, but Eleanor was so easy to talk to. Not that she would admit it herself, but she gave great advice. Although, most of the time it contained something along the lines of screw them, which Tahani took as her way of saying that she worries too much. In all fairness, her friend wasn’t wrong.
“Sometimes, I wonder if my parents were correct about me. That I’m as unlovable as they have made me feel for all these years. Perhaps, I am not cut out to be in a loving and stable relationship with one who has my entire heart. Someone to share my passions with, someone to hold me in their arms when I would love to disappear from the world. What if I don’t deserve it?”
“Tahani, stop”, Eleanor interrupted her, before resting her hands over hers.
After what felt like ages to her, she finally found the courage to meet the blonde’s eyes. They looked at her with gentle concern. Tahani was surprised how easy it was to stay in contact with them, right here, right now. They were a darker shade of blue, almost greyish, like a thunderstorm ready to unravel.
It was kind of like how she saw Eleanor as well, but not in the way one must think. She is bold, strong, and doesn’t back down from anything. She bulldozes into your life, into her life without any warning. Sure, it had been unsettling at first, meeting someone like her. But she wouldn’t have changed her friend for the world.
“I ruined our evening, didn’t I? Sorry darling, I didn’t mean to-”
A small sigh escaped the blonde’s mouth, “Yeah, you should be sorry.”
The brunette gave a small nod in agreement, before her eyes landed on the table in front of her. “You should be sorry for saying such stuff about yourself. I’m serious when I say that you are one of the most impressive people I will ever know. Like come on, look at you! You are smart, an absolute smokeshow, and not to mention the progress you have made over the past few months, be proud dude!”
Tahani could tell that Eleanor was genuine based on the slight smile she wore on her face. She was trying to react in a more nonchalant way about the compliments, but what’s that good for? It was nice to have a friend who cares about your feelings. Someone who listens while you chatter away about various subjects, even if they do not know what it is you are talking about. Someone to notice things about you that no one else had before. And Eleanor is that person to her.
“Thank you, Eleanor, really. Your words are much appreciated”, Tahani said, taking the blonde’s hands into her own and softly squeezing them, her way of expressing gratitude whenever she couldn’t quite find the words for it. She mirrored the blonde’s facial expression, but with a wider grin of her own.
“Well, I mean them, so you better get used to original Eleanor Shellstrop pep talks in the future if you ever need another one”, she said proudly in return. “But not too many, I still have a reputation to uphold,” she added with a wink, earning her a chuckle out of Tahani.
Then her attention went back to the waitress, who walked into their direction with a serving platter of their order.
Eleanor took the plates with a new sense of eagerness, before placing the food down in front of them. “Let’s eat first, and then it’s time to show the Australians what we are made of.”
-
After a while, the two women had found themselves on the dance floor, listening to a tune by her good friend David Guetta that was blasting through the speakers. Eleanor was, to no one’s surprise, swaying her hips to the beat, with a margarita in hand. Tahani shuffled reluctantly on her heels, unsure how to go about it. Moments like these made her wish for more. If only she had the ability to let her hair down like Eleanor could, figuratively speaking of course. Sure, she could be a tad bit careless to those around her, but the blonde seemed so effortlessly able to focus on herself and herself only.
Eleanor seemed to pick up on her uneasiness, and closed the distance between them. She leaned closer to the brunette’s ear, her face now a few centimetres apart from hers. Her breath smelled of tequila, accompanied by a tinge of fruit.
“Come on, haven’t you done any type of dance when you were younger? No offense, but your parents sound like the type that would put their daughters in ballet class, whether they enjoy it or not.”
“You are aware that learning a plié, a croisé and a pirouette is not the same thing as dancing like you are right now.”, Tahani answered back, slightly raising her voice so that she could hear her.
“I definitely know what all of that means….”, Eleanor replied, convincing absolutely no one.
“But still, I invited fun Tahani tonight, where is she right now?” Eleanor jabbed her in the shoulder twice to make her point, her eyes shimmering in the LED lights.
Tahani furrowed her brows in response, because how dare she insinuate that she is not here to have a lovely time? Is this her preferred way to spend her time? Maybe not…. but she likes Eleanor enough to suck it up. Well, at least she did before she said that.
“I AM fun!", she hissed while crossing her arms.
Instead of Eleanor acknowledging her own mistake and owning up to it, she crossed her own arms and the smug look on her face said enough: Tahani was proving her point by being so defensive.
Tahani kept her act up for a few seconds longer, giving her friend murderous looks that probably would have worked on any other person. Not Eleanor though. So she decided to change tactics.
“Don’t worry, I will show you how fun I can be, and you’ll regret opening your mouth.”, she said with confidence, before pulling Eleanor along to the bar. She ordered four shots of vodka, two for both of them.
Whereas Tahani’s face read of disgust after drinking it down, it was cheap and not to mention, she was more of a wine woman herself, Eleanor clearly didn’t share that same sentiment. She held her hand up to the gentleman behind the bar, already down for a refill.
Before Tahani could signal that she was done for now, her shots were already filled to the brim with the same liquor. Eleanor held up her small glass to clink it against hers again.
“I’ve had enough for now, thank you”, Tahani basically shouted at Eleanor, shoving the glasses back in her direction. She hadn’t planned on drinking alcohol, especially because they were alone tonight. If Eleanor decides to go all in, while she herself cannot even stand on her own two feet, then they would have a problem to say the least. One of them has to be the responsible adult.
A part of her was expecting another snarky jab her way, but Eleanor simply shrugged and helped herself.
“Do you lovely ladies have a tab open?”, the barman interrupted.
Tahani opened her mouth to answer, but she was beaten to it. “Yes, Eleanor Shellstrop.”, before she turned on her heels and basically sprinted back to the dance floor. She had incoherently yelled a sentence Tahani’s way, something about how the song that came on was ‘absolutely banging’?
As soon as she was out of her line of sight, Tahani leaned forward to get the attention of the same man that helped Eleanor. “Pardon me, the tab will be on my name instead: Tahani Al-Jamil.”
She didn’t give him any time to respond, and instead made her way back to her friend. Eleanor’s movements had only gotten wilder in the mere minutes she was left to her own devices. Her arms were up in the air, while twirling around. She hadn’t even noticed that Tahani was watching her, nor did she pay the people around them any attention.
Her eyes wandered around the room for a bar stool, or anything else to sit on. She was perfectly content with watching from the sidelines. But before she could even walk three steps, a firm hand gripped hers from behind instead, and she was turned right back around.
However, Eleanor underestimated her own strength and the taller woman practically bumped into her. Tahani steadied herself by grabbing the blonde’s shoulders and the wrist of the hand she was already holding.
“Woah, sorry”, Eleanor said sheepishly, her eyes gliding back up.
“It’s quite alright”. Tahani waved her off, it was not a big deal at all.
Despite the accidental collision, neither woman made an attempt to reclaim their personal space. Tahani felt a wave of heat sweep across her face for reasons she couldn’t quite explain. Had it really taken her this long to notice how warm it was inside?
When her eyes wandered back up, taking in the familiar sight in front of her, she noticed the same rosy glow on the woman’s neck and cheeks. Her gaze lingered a second longer on her lips. She realized rather quickly, so she focused on locking eyes instead. Eleanor either acted like she hadn’t noticed, or she really hadn’t.
Finally, the hand in hers twitched and it brought Tahani out of her daze, whatever that was meant to represent, and Eleanor spoke, or rather, she shouted to get her voice above the blasting sounds.
“Wanna dance?" It would be a shame if I had to hold this dance floor on my own, don’t you think?” Her greyish blue eyes seemed to search for an answer, swinging from side to side, before Tahani could respond.
Tahani stayed quiet for a moment longer, before she hesitantly nodded her head and let Eleanor drag her back to the floor. Their fingers stayed interlaced, even though there was no reason for it to stay this way. Nonetheless, Tahani was slowly and surely loosening up.
Eleanor had a much more energetic approach, it reminded Tahani of a firecracker. She moved as if no one was watching. Jumping up and down, their arms swinging because of it. The smile on her face was bright, unapologetic and more importantly, completely directed at her.
The sight in front of her made her a little giddy inside, and she couldn’t help but reciprocate the expression on her lips. Her liveliness was magnetic, like a moth to a flame.
“There she is! The Tahani I wanted to see tonight”, Eleanor’s raised voice rang out, and by the gleeful grin plastered onto her face, it was clear that she was pleased to notice her friend was having fun.
Tahani rolled her eyes in slight annoyance, but there was no real heat behind it. The blonde wasn’t wrong, she was enjoying herself and surprisingly so. She nodded her head in response, before she held their intertwined hands above Eleanor’s head, giving her a gentle twirl. To anyone else it might look comedic, considering their large gap in height, but to her it feels just right.
Her friend returns the favor, standing on her toes to be able to reach above her head and twirl her. Adorable. Not that Tahani would voice that out loud, it would read as condescending and like she’s making fun of Eleanor’s height again. It’s not exactly her fault that she’s so short.
After a second spin, Eleanor places her hand on the small of Tahani’s back. And before she can fathom what she plans to do, Eleanor dips her slightly in a heat of the moment type of way, she figured. A squeak escapes her mouth and she grips both of Eleanor’s arms tightly, her eyes widening. It was purely a reflex to react in such a manner, she was well supported. But still.
Eleanor guided her back up in a quick motion, seemingly shocked that she had been able to sweep Tahani Al-Jamil off of her feet, just like that.
“You can stop squeezing me now, babe”, Eleanor said while gesturing towards the way Tahani was still clutching her arms.
“I wouldn’t have needed to, if you hadn’t decided on being so unpredictable”, Tahani replied while she dropped Eleanor’s arms, her fingers smoothing over her own dress.
“Dude, you are fine. I would never drop you, you know that right?” Eleanor’s face read as confident to anyone else, but Tahani could sense a slight need for reassurance.
“Yes Eleanor, I know.”
It wasn’t a lie.
It seemed to be enough for Eleanor and the gentle smile returned. She pointed towards the bar, and then she pointed at Tahani, asking if she wanted anything without words. Tahani asked for water, concluding that she was utterly done with alcohol for at least a couple of weeks. Eleanor nodded in understanding and made her way over to the bar.
As she watched her go, Tahani thought only one thing: she was really dreading the aftermath of tonight.
Anyone who's into the good place, ships teleanor and is active on ao3? I'm currently writing a teleanor one shot & i will drop it hopefully this year still :) my user is the same on there as here 💗
I must say, it might not stay a oneshot & if people really enjoy the story I might expand but for now that's what I'll call it
are you active on ao3 & ship tahani x eleanor from the good place?
i was working on an edit for teleanor with 'for good' & I can't get over the way Eleanor looks at Tahani in the final episode 🥲 she looks so proud and loving, i miss them so much guys 💔💔💔
it was really cute and it also showed some growth in Eleanor, that she wasn't afraid to let her best friend know that she appreciated her and would actively miss her, even if tahani ended up staying right after <3

Michael Schur doesn't get enough credit for making The Good Place, a show about fixing the afterlife for all humans for all of space and time, and going from that to A Man on the Inside, a show about a cranky old lady in a San Fransisco retirement home who's missing a ruby necklace, and having the stakes in both those shows matter the same, cause the real stakes are about compassion, integrity, humility, trust, love, respect; about people treating each other with care and dignity and forgiveness.
