How many of you know what #BoysTown is? And do you think we should be training more kids for the trades? I’m out here at @boystownvillage original location in Nebraska with @joshtempletv talking to kids about careers in the trades. I’ve got to say, I’ve been completely moved by the time & effort this program puts into helping these at risk teens. Originally Father Flanagan started Boys Town in 1917 to give option & loving support to young boys who were deserted, homeless & forgotten with no prospects. Did you see the 1938 Hollywood movie staring Mickey Rooney & Spencer Tracey? I’ve had an incredible experience out here. My favorite experience so far was dinning at one of the teacher-family homes that housed 8 young ladies offering them structure, discipline & support. It’s incredible to think that these girls were either en route to jail or escaping harmful home situations, they had better people skills and manners than many young people I meet now & days. I am so excited for their futures, I know it’s not easy, but these ladies have been given the resources to foster a different kind of life. Wonderful program for both young guys and gals. Geez! This storm is making me anxious. My lil’ bro just bought a house in #wilmingtonnc one mile from the water. Praying for all the people affected from this storm and pray that it doesn’t flood the house! He works so hard! He had to boarded up the house all by himself shimmying up a 3/4” board on a ladder after working 80 hrs and then evacuated. Sometimes we forget about our roots, but they are what keep us grounded. How magnificent is this Ficus macrophylla aka Moreton Bay Fig? It’s roots are powerful and and overpowering but it feels so amazing to be surrounded by such incredible strength and beauty. Native to East Australia this plant can make or break a garden. Never recommended to be planted near a structure but if you have the space it can create a completely unique space. So I did it! Delivering my speech was a humbling experience... It was a huge month coming right off of filming an episode for @owntv and then right into my @tedx_official talk about landscaping the next day. I was so excited about giving this speech and practiced a bunch leading up to the talk... however I drew a blank for a good few mins and it was tough to get back on track but I did find my way to get my point across. :) I kept my composure and thank goodness for video editors who can take out the long pauses here and there. Bear you were a great buddy, we had a long run and I will miss you handsome man. My favorite memories were of you barking at yourself in the mirror, chasing rocks and keeping me company when I was building out your yard. Happy Sunday Friends! Question: Can you help me pick a title please? Ok so I am doing a TEDx talk in August. Super stoked I got a slot as I pitched them when I realized that the theme was about 'Building Community'. I've been wanting to do a talk on how landscapes affect our lives, out neighborhoods and our environment. The title is super important in terms of peaking curiosity and striking relevance with people which translates to the overall success of the talk... Here are 3 titles I am entertaining... 1. Why our landscapes matter and how we can do it better 2. Your piece, our puzzle-How our landscapes effect our lives and those around us 3. Hey guys! I'm so fortunate to have all the lovely support from you all here on instagram. I wanted to take a moment to personally introduce myself to my recent followers. :D I am a landscape designer & contractor. I work mainly in San Diego designing and building peoples yards. The best part about my job is that I get to create spaces that people get to live and make memories in. The only limit is your creativity...and ok, budget too ;) I also host landscape renovation shows on the DIY Network for part of the year. I often get asked how did I became a landscape professional... I've always loved being outside... In fact when I was a kid my mom signed me up for soccer and I ended up traveling the field picking daisies. :) On top of loving to be outside I also found it was important to express myself creatively. Since my parents invested in our high school education we were all on our own for college. So being frugal minded I went to community college to figure out what I wanted to do until I discover landscape architecture. Which combines science, art & outdoors! Literally I read a flyer and was like that's it! So I enrolled at Cal poly SLO where I worked 3 jobs, make great friends and pulled all nighters learning about exterior design. (at San Diego, California)
