Assignment 7
Paying it Forward and Course Reflection -
What did you gain from this course in terms of your role as a creator?
In this course, I learned a lot about how the research, purpose, and functions of a product is just as important as how well it looks. I learned to look deeper into what a sign, advertisement, or product can do based on where it is placed or its specific function.
I used to only really care about the looks and aesthetics of a sign instead of whether or not it effectively told me the information I am looking for. While aesthetics are an important element to design, it is not the only element. I enjoyed the cause advertisement assignment because I was able to incorporate a company to an important cause while keeping a consistent theme/look.
I learned a lot about research and what is considered common knowledge when we did the fire exit signs. There are a lot of information and symbols that we can assume that other have knowledge of but I learned that this is not true. When designing a sign, I have to take into consideration the target audience, where it is located in the world etc. Fire signs in different countries looks different from what we are used to seeing in America, so I had to look into finding a solution that works on a universal level.
How do you envision applying the knowledge gained into your practice going forth?
I envision using a lot of what I learned through research for any of the future careers or projects that I work on. I know now that it is important to pay attention to all the elements of design and understand that the goal is effective communication. Getting important information from one source to another as accurately as possible. I feel like I have a better understanding of how to look at the entire problem and implement a plan for an effective solution.
Project 2 - Kori and Sarah
Project 2: User Persona
Age-Friendly Environment Article Participation
https://www.ageuk.org.uk/london/projects-campaigns/age-friendly-london/transport/
I found it interesting to look at different cities and their approach to making their cities more age friendly. Since my partner and I are looking into designing an easy app for seniors to use for transportation, this website was informative to seeing how a different city operates their public transportation. The UK focuses on many aspects that I should look into when creating my project such as accessibility, affordability, reliability, and destinations. I found the affordability section to be interesting because it mentioned that seniors get subsidized passes for all their transportation. The UK continues to adapt their city into an age friendly environment. With this research I will be able to compare it to how Honolulu operates and make changes for my project based on what needs to be improved in the transportation designs for the elderly.
Assignment 5: Cause Ads
My cause ads are for the jewelry brand Puravida and the humanitarian aid organization called Direct Relief. A percentage of purchases is donated to Direct Relief to provide protective gear to essential health workers responding to COVID-19. I wanted to influence young adults to stay safe from COVID-19 by wearing masks, staying home, and attending online calls and classes but to also be able to do so in style with these collections of jewelry.
Assignment 5 Sketches
Turning Policy Into Public Action Reflection
The article, Solving the World’s Toughest Problem: Turning Public Policy Into Private Action, provides multiple examples on how policy makers can influence a change in an individual’s actions. One example was Kalapana, who became more accustomed to recycling more often after moving to London. By charging residences by weight of their waste, she had money at stake, forcing her to change her personal habits of recycling. The author suggests that we are now able to identify a pattern in the changes we make based on policies.

Design Challenge #6
Design has always played a significant role in political activism from all sides, be it political cartoons, protest posters, or the self-app
This article talks about how two fonts were created to raise awareness of climate change. Greta Grotesk is a teenager who has gained global attention for her work in climate change awareness. The design company Uno created a typeface based on Greta’s actual handwriting. Her handwriting has become well known since her writing is shared for many to read during the climate change movements. This typeface called, Greta Grotesk, is described as “Clean, simple, all caps, and subtly emotional — her handwriting was the perfect typeface to ring in a new decade that places high value on authenticity.”
I chose to feature this article because it shows how typeface can be created to bring awareness to an important issue and can be used on a global scale. It can also inspire others to create more and expand on the original idea such as the second typeface created called Coastline. This typeface was created to project the rising impact of sea levels on coastlines.
Assignment #4: Revisions
What were the revisions implemented?
I worked on the second poster that focused on tourists using their masks in cafes and shops on the island. Revision notes stated that I should use a more colorful color scheme. I agree that I could change it so that it would fit the Hawaii area better. I was also suggested to add a more modern design to it so instead of the palm trees I went with the hibiscus which is more specifically Hawaiian.
Why did you choose to implement those changes?
Since I thought that these could be placed in Waikiki shops or cafes I looked up color schemes for trendy hotels such as the Laylow hotel. It had to be more appealing in order for people to actually look at it. The hotel uses pastels, pinks and darker greens for contrast so I went with those colors. I wanted to make sure that the design wasn’t too distracting and the main call to action can be read from afar.
How has the design solution evolved?
Making the words and the mask stand out was an important design goal. Hopefully my design solution of a more modern and colorful design will help catch more tourists eyes and follow the signs directions.
Assignment #4
Overall, what was your design strategy
My design strategy was to make the information the easiest to read and understand with the limited flexibility we were given for the first designs. I wasn't sure if we could add icons but I just went with a simple layout. For the last two I played around with the sizes of the titles and made the headers pretty large to stand out.
Why did you choose that particular typeface?
I chose the type face called telegraph because it looked artistic but also digital which I believed would fit the theme of the class, digital storytelling. I liked the different weights the font had and its nice to see how different the look of the post can change with just a thicker or thinner font.
Kerning Game
I got 93. It was fun to play and I’ve never tried this game before but I really enjoyed making the letters evenly spaced and now I know what kerning means.
I didn’t know what to expect from this game but I thought it was really fun seeing the different fonts. I want to try a second time to see if I can get a perfect score.
Assignment 3
I decided to focus on the candle icon since I thought they would resemble the item well. I enjoyed drawing the shape out based on the simple shapes I could make out from the actual photo of the candles. There are may variations of the icon that I could use with only black and white and simple lines.
I decided to map out restaurants and from this I decided to make icons for candles, utensils, pepper shaker, dinner tray, and wine glass.
