Getting out of a taxi the other day

And so my chest was empty but it felt okay
I just fished out the pieces and walked away

jasmine but anyone who knows her well just calls her “jazz”
she’s a half-blood witch (on her mother’s side) but her father was always aware of the truth about jasmine’s mother. her childhood was very deeply rooted in magic, and her mother and aunts taught jazz and her sister a very traditional approach to magic. just about everything in their home has been there for centuries, handed down from one witch to another over the course of countless generations. long before she ever went to hogwarts, jazz was being instructed in potion making, spell-casting and the like, although a lot of the methods they used would probably be considered antiquated by modern standards.
the nearby village was occupied solely by muggles, nearly all of whom were very wary of the mishra household. as children, jazz and lucy were subject to constant ridicule from the townspeople because of this, but the mishras are an extremely tight-knit (if insular) family, and there was always someone to turn to for comfort.
jazz was sorted into gryffindor as soon as the hat was placed on her head, surprising no one. her magical ability has always been slow in developing (it came far less easily to jazz than her older sister) but she managed to scrape by at school, through some miracle. she’s extremely restless, constantly looking for the next big adventure, but she has a knack for charming her way out of sticky situations. she loves very intensely (feels everything intensely, really), burns through about about five different “soulmates” a month and cries herself ragged over every breakup.
basically, she’s an emotional minefield and she’s probably put her family (and lucy especially) through hell trying to deal with the fallout of some of her bigger messes, but she genuinely has her heart in the right place. god, she’s trying so hard, to pull herself together, it’s just that it never seems to last!
her father died in a tragic accident while jazz was still away at school, and her mother followed him not long after. for the remainder of her childhood, jazz and her sister were raised by their aunts. they were the kind of guardians who would let you have chocolate cake for dinner, and took them to a lot of traditional wiccan gatherings, and there was still a lot of happiness in the house. but it was tempered by grief over their parents’ deaths and–for jazz–insecurities about her magical ability, and growing resentment about the family’s isolation from The Real World™
one summer, jazz decided to run away from home–and she did, and she never came back. she said goodbye to her sister, skipped town in some muggle man’s convertible, and occasionally sent some postcards back to lucy from the states just to prove she was still alive. months (and then years) of partying followed, where jazz was pretty much free to indulge all of her worst impulses without adult supervision.
the guy she ran away with ended up treating her pretty horribly, which became jazz’s wake-up call to run again. she’s back in london now, a little more guarded and skittish, but still very much prone to the Party Life. right now she’s bumming it in some sleazy studio apartment, trying very hard to keep a job for more than a few weeks.
