A short fairy tale about love in its myriad forms— familial, found, and free, all brought together by Black Girl Magic!
Once Upon a Time...
there was a princess named Audre. The princess loved her mother, the Queen, very much. One day, the Queen told Princess Audre, “When you grow up, you must only marry someone who loves you as much as I do.” She gave Audre a kiss on the head goodnight and tucked the little princess into bed. The next morning, the Queen was nowhere to be found.
The Obsidian Princess is a fairy tale written and illustrated in conversation with the Brothers Grimm and other fairy tales from around the world. In many of these stories, blackness is seen as a shorthand for curses, misfortune, and moral failures. In others, women are depicted as villains for valuing themselves. The Obsidian Princess talks back to these stories by centering Blackness as a strength, girlhood as a boon, and love as a superpower, not something to be ashamed of or compromised on.
