Toothbrushing

For those of us who didn’t grow up in forced labor camps, brushing our teeth was probably our first bicep work out. I hate to admit it, but when I brush my teeth, if I feel the burn in my upper arm, I’m like “ooooh yeah, hygiene and fitness synergy.” If you’re a lazy ass with an electric toothbrush, fuck you. When I meet guys and do that casual arm grab during conversation, kind of flirty, kind of friendly, and their upper arms are flabby, I think, “omg, does this guy not brush his teeth?!” Then I check his other arm. Because maybe he’s dominant handed on the other side. And if it’s still flabby I think “ooooh no. No….” It reminds me of this guy I went to college with. We all made fun of him for being socially awkward. Not really, but enough that compared to the rest of us he was. A few months into college, his freshman year roommate Geoff is like, “Hey guys…. I don’t think Dave brushes his teeth.” We were all so skeptical. “No, how can that be? His teeth aren’t yellow enough! His breath isn’t bad enough!” So Geoff and the other guys took to observing Dave in the communal bathroom at bedtime. No one ever saw him brush his teeth. Finally Geoff looks in the drawer where Dave keeps his bathroom caddy. “Guys. No toothbrush.” We look at each other wide eyed in silence. Geoff repeats once, “NO TOOTHBRUSH!” And while everyone else is like “NO FUCKING WAY!” “UGH DAVE IS SO GROSS!!!," I thought, “I knew it!” and immediately felt validated for thinking “Flabby silly putty arms equals no tooth brushing.” And if you’re thinking, “fuck you, Jenn! I use an electric tooth brush!” You know what? I don’t feel bad for you. Go to the gym. Or take someone to second base every day, once in the morning and once at night. Ladies will forgive you for your yellow teeth if you can actually get them off with your hands.

One of my favorite places in the entire world, gray or shine. Took this earlier today 15 min before sunset, although you wouldn’t be able to tell.

Why do we still make nursing students wear all white? It's like a hazing rite of passage. "We're going to make you wear white so everyone knows you pledged House Nursing. It's going to be see-through so everyone knows where your muffin top begins and ends and whether you get a bikini wax or not. And if you think you can get away with a personal touch like pink socks, well then you should have pledged House PT/OT instead. Stop Calling It Mental Illness, Please.

I know ICD-10 finally finished its roll out. Anyone know if there are medical diagnostic codes for “racist,” “misogynist,” or its derivatives? Doubtful. Mental illness is not the <motive> behind it. None of them write in their manifestos, “I’m doing this because I’m mentally ill and no one believed or helped me.” They’ve written things like how they want to kill women out of revenge for refusing sex, or how they want to kill Muslims because they hate Islam, or about white supremacy. Survivors say the latest terrorist asked victims their religions before shooting. Calling these people mentally ill makes seeking treatment all the more shameful for people with depression, anxiety, and other mood disturbances. Call it what it is: bigotry and terrorism, made all the worse by a lack of community in these men’s lives.

Summed up by Salon.com’s Arthur Chu, “Blaming ‘mental illness’ is a cop-out – and one that lets us avoid talking about race, guns, hatred and terrorism.”

I’m Back, Bitches

Doing nothing but make friends and do improv for 5 weeks straight was a creative renaissance for me. It revived the part of me that was a liberal arts major, the part of me from 10 years ago that wanted only to experience and feel and write. Did being outside of the hospital environment for so long have an effect? Probably. Did the opportunity for daily creative expression catalyze it? Most definitely. Will I continue? I really hope so.

Here’s to writing short stories again (which I have been doing sporadically my entire life, not just 10 years ago), performing more improv in SF than I did pre-Chicago, discovering new music again, forming close bonds with people even if it ends someday, and, maybe? illustrating my tattoo finally.
