We watched this female jaguar resting during midday heat (40+ degrees). Suddenly, a massive male jaguar jumped out of the bushes. The female's adrenaline kicked in and her pupils turned blue for a second, as you can see on the shots.

Invader Zim: Dib season 1 official Character Model sheet.
Seeing all those model references for drawing Dib just speaking normally is reminding me of another post I saw talking about how a big part of what makes IZ look so good, but also made it very difficult and expensive to animate, is the complicated mouth animations. In most animated shows they just draw a face in ¾ profile that doesn’t move with a mouth pasted on top that uses the same 3 frames to show it opening and closing. And as long as it’s timed properly no one notices that the mouth’s shape doesn’t change to match the vowels or consonants unless they wanted to splurge on unique animation for a hiss or an emphasized vowel. But IZ had so many specific rules for how to draw, not just the mouths, but the entire head deforming for every syllable of every word depending on what they were saying, how they were saying it, and what angle they were drawn from. And it was so integral to the show’s unique style that there was no way they could just change the character designs or the way they animated them to make the heads and the expressions and the mouths more static so they’d be easier and cheaper to animate.
They joked about blowing their budget on CGI walnuts, and no doubt the CGI in the show was expensive for real. But I think they could’ve easily cut back on the CGI if that were really the main thing standing between the show being able to continue and cancellation. But I think the show would’ve been expensive regardless of CGI because of how much of the budget likely went into animating the heads alone, and there was no way to reconcile that with the cost cutting Viacom wanted.
