#FBF | Ushers' outfits inspired by Fela & his queens. Regardless of how frivolous some people thought they were, these women held their own with a power and confidence I remain in awe of. They were dedicated to their craft, the music and the life they were living. Honestly, I think they were quite badass. Charting the revolutionary course they did made them targets of a lot of aggression and pressure by virtue of choosing to be with Fela.

#fbf I remember this project quite clearly. I remember being totally thrilled & just as nervous about being trusted with total creative control over styling & dressing the #ushers for a Fela's shrine inspired event. Every aspect of this project thrilled me, researching Fela's queens and the way they bridged their personal & professional personalities with their music & art. Their flair, their commitment to putting on an electrifying show, their irreverence - I was taken in by all of it. Looking up their costumes and the ladies' varied styles, I had to come up with an outfit, a uniform that was a slightly contemporary interpretation of their costumes especially considering that the ushers didn't just need to mirror the #EventDecor and theme, but needed to be comfortable enough to work, not dance. After I narrowed down the design came the 'slight hurdle' of convincing a few people on the fence about the design that it wasn't as risque as it seemed on paper. But then the fun really started - sourcing the fabric & accessories (oh, the accessories), making samples of the designs, auditions, finding the hair threading ladies & zeroing in on the make-up look & palette. I'll be honest, I also remember trying not to totally freak out when random things went sideways last minute like one of the hair threaders "vanishing" or the lovely make-up artist constantly veering off into the 'pretty' make-up look, I had to stand there and rein her back in. But it was fantastic - seeing it come together, delivering as best as I could, feeling that the decision to trust me with executing this vision wasn't misplaced. Mrs. M, as I fondly refer to the trusting client 😊, is one of those people that inspires and totally gets creative license. Her approach to #EventDesign & management is driven by an commitment to excellence so #uncompromising you step your game all the way up. For some reason - the year ending, all the 'noise' going on in the world, or maybe because it's #Fela's birthday weekend or because I've been practising #gratitude a bit more, but this project crossed my mind & I am thankful. #SartoriallyTwisted #EventUshers #Joy #ChooseYourLife #PushYourSELF #AfricanPrint #tag
