Dinner with Coop! 🙂
@chrissycooper2: James! you look like you had a great time 🙂
Ellie watched with quiet fondness as Chrissy stared out at the spread of wool she'd laid out for them both. The other woman was looking at it all with the same wide-eyed wonder that Ellie had when she'd bought it! Ellie had never been a very material person, and she'd certainly never been able to afford to be either, but all of the most expensive things she owned had been gifts from Reid. Gifts she'd been endlessly and utterly grateful for, of course! But gifts all the same. She wasn't a big spender by any measure, even when she had a little left over pocket money once the bills had been paid. Any residual pennies went into Dylan's future college fund. Her second greatest investment after that had always been her thread and her wool. Whatever she was knitting or sewing would eventually be fashioned into something genuinely useful, so she always saw her purchases as going to a good cause.
“A bandana would be so cute! But what about you?” Ellie mused, smiling excitedly. After a brief pause, she elaborated. “Sorry, I mean... What would you like? Not that we can't make Lettie her bandana! But maybe us girls should be a little selfish and make something for ourselves first?”
Ellie giggled at the thought. She'd rarely had a selfish thought in all her 30-odd years. Being a mother meant that there was always somebody else whose priorities came first, and being a sister and a best friend and a daughter often meant the same. At work, she had a classroom full of tinies that she needed to give all of her attention to, somehow all at the same time. At home, even when Dylan was out with his friends or spending the night at Ozzie's, she made sure she had a dinner rustled up for Reid, or was checking in to make sure Aspen was taking care of himself. She always had a million and one different people at the forefront of her mind, ready to distract her as she fretted over their every need.
But tonight was girl's night, which meant that the only people who mattered were her and Chrissy! Their interests and their needs were the top priority, and Ellie was determined to make it the best girl's night ever.
Rummaging around in the drawer on the underside of the table, she retrieved the bright coasters she'd made just last week, and presented them to Chrissy with a rather dramatic flourish. She had three whole stacks of them! One batch had been for Reid's mom, of course, which were designed to look like fruit slices. Another for Ainsley, who'd requested a pretty array of pinks and reds, and so she'd fashioned them into various flowers. The last batch was for Glenn, not that she'd told him yet! She didn't know just how her friend would react to something as silly and cutesy as a set of coasters, but she'd spent hours and hours wiling away, the most intricate details being crocheted into each one. Her lovely friend was such an enthusiast when it came to Greek Mythology, so she could only hope that he'd be as pleased as punch to see the miniature trident that she'd knitted into one, and the lightning bolt that decorated the next.
As she awaited Chrissy's response, Ellie's eyes widened in surprise at her words. She'd always thought Ozzie's colleague was as lovely as could be, but hearing how genuinely grateful and excited she was made Ellie's heart burst with pride. Though, admittedly, her Pinterest remark did make a giggle erupt from her chest.
“I looked at Pinterest too!” she exclaimed cheerfully. Shaking her head fondly, she leaned into the plush cushion of the sofa, and twisted her body to face Chrissy. “I've never been on a girl's night either, if it helps. I had no idea what to expect! Or what to plan, or what sort of snacks to lay out, or if you'd even like knitting with me. I spent about 3 hours today scrubbing away a particularly mucky spot on the kitchen floor where Dylan had dragged mud into the apartment, only to intentionally spill coffee onto the counter so that you wouldn't think I was a total nutcase who didn't let her son actually live.”
She blushed, feeling embarrassed at her sudden tangent. She probably hadn't needed to tell Chrissy all of that, actually. But it was true! She was so completely out of practice when it came to making friends and organising dates, that she'd spent the last 3 days telling Ainsley she had a grown up play date. The other woman had simply giggled, wriggled her eyebrows, and said is that what we're calling it, these days?
“Sorry. That was a lot,” Ellie groaned.
Chrissy looked at Ellie curiously, like she wasn’t quite sure what the other woman was asking. What about Chrissy? What about her? She didn’t really know what she meant by that.
“Oh.” Her expression cleared. She thought about what she would like, trying to push past all the ideas springing to mind that were namely things that she knew Lettie would love. She pressed her lips into a thin line as she genuinely considered her options, before finally offering Ellie a soft shrug. “I like bandanas as well?”
She didn’t really have her own sense of style, not like Lettie. Chrissy was always dressed in scrubs. She didn’t have the same flair for fashion like her sister. Lettie had recently begun watching several YouTube tutorials, all of them detailing intricate braiding patterns that she had picked up quickly, but Chrissy wasn’t sure she would be as good at it. Emergency surgery? Sure! Anything more complicated than a Dutch braid? Chrissy didn’t have the time to learn something like that, so her hair looked the same as it always did. Same style, same single plait. She wasn’t sure she would even suit a bandana, but Chrissy wasn’t altogether sure if there was anything else that she would suit. At the very least, with a bandana, she would make Lettie happy by matching with her.
When Ellie brought out her coasters, Chrissy eagerly leaned forwards to inspect them. Her eyes widened behind her glasses and she held each of them like she was cradling something precious, her thumb sweeping gently across the intricate stitchwork.
“Ellie, these are so nice,” she said. Concern crept into her tone. “I’m not sure I’d be able to make something like this. Maybe we should start off with something with a pattern that’s more…” She winced, hating to use the word her sister had decided was a perfectly accurate descriptor for her. “Plain?”
At least Lettie sounded fond when she said it.
Chrissy listened carefully as Ellie rambled, relieved that she wasn’t the only one who had a tendency like that. She was gladdened to hear that she wasn’t the only one to have researched their night in, nor was she the only one who had overthought it. Admittedly, the anecdote about the coffee stain was funny and Chrissy let out a delighted laugh before deciding that might be a little rude. Quickly, she pressed her knuckles against her lips and shook her head, frowning at herself.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to laugh,” she said.
She thought back to her own childhood, holding Lettie’s hand through their parents’ divorce and all the upheaval that followed. Their mom had plenty to say about mud in the house and spillages on the counter. She definitely didn’t want her daughters to show any signs of actually living in her otherwise pristine home. Chrissy quite liked that Ellie wanted to illustrate that she gave her son room to play, even if her methods were unusual.
“I’m glad you told me,” Chrissy smiled. “Because otherwise I think I might have been questioning why your son was drinking coffee at his age.” Her smile softened. “I think you’re a really good mom, Ellie. Ozzie thinks so too, he says it all the time.”
She let out a bright laugh this time and then surveyed the wool in front of her, Ellie’s words about being selfish echoing in her head.
It felt wrong to do it but she leaned forward and picked up the rainbow wool, peeking sideways at Ellie.
“Is it okay if I use this one for my bandana?” she asked.
The moment Chrissy declared she was used to the loud hustle and bustle of the ER, Ellie couldn’t help but laugh. While her own apartment was nothing like the chaos she was sure her brother and his best friend endured, she certainly believed Dylan gave her a healthy dose of it every day. Her little boy was as loud as could be, usually racing around the apartment, one jump from the sofa away from chipping a tooth or spraining a wrist. She and Reid had needed to shoot down the prospect of bunk beds very early on when moving to New York, her son’s disappointment palpable when she told him that he would have to have a low bed, one that invited minimal opportunities for injury.
When Chrissy had first misunderstood her invitation as a request for a babysitter, Ellie had been quick to reassure her that she’d never wish Dylan upon her. Now, the more she thought about it, she figured that being an ER doctor was probably something akin to dealing with 20 Dylan’s every hour on the hour.
“You’re an absolute superstar,” Ellie told the other girl as she gratefully retrieved the snacks from her.
She took one quick glance into the carrier bag and smiled fondly. Ellie had likely overdone it with her own spread, but she still liked that Chrissy had come prepared too. She set the bag down for the time being, knowing she’d come back to it later once they both started feeling a little peckish. Instead, she turned her attention to the sweet brunette that was now perusing her collection of yarn. Thankfully, she seemed to be wearing an almost identical enthusiastic smile that Ellie had been when she’d bought it! She’d already talked Kip’s ear off about how pleased she was with the wool he’d picked out for her, so knowing that Chrissy was just as happy with it made her heart soar.
“We should absolutely, one thousand percent make your sister – Lettie, isn’t it? – the prettiest, most rainbowy bag imaginable,” Ellie decided, completely bulldozing over Chrissy’s comment about time and expense. The other girl wasn’t wrong at all, but Ellie found she didn’t mind. She loved making things for others, and she found the reward was far greater than the cost. If Lettie wanted a shoulder bag made of rainbow wool, then a rainbow bag she would have!
Throwing herself down onto the sofa, Ellie patted the cushioned seat beside her, inviting Chrissy to join. She eyed the wool thoughtfully, realising she’d practically finished on every project she’d recently set herself. She’d replaced Aspen’s missing gloves months ago and had crocheted the sweetest little neckerchief for Calypso’s collar, as per Glenn’s request. Reid had needed a new sweater, and she’d knitted Dylan a matching one to boot. The last thing on her to-do list was a blanket for Mrs Macnamara, but that seemed like a heavy task to lump on Chrissy when she was just starting out.
“I was thinking... Maybe we could start with something small? Maybe a hat, or a bandana? Last week I made coasters, but I really don’t want to bore you!”
Chrissy looked up in surprise when she realised that the spread of yarn wasn’t just Ellie’s tasteful way of boasting about how much wool she had. Oh! So, this was for the both of them to make something!
The same grateful warmth from earlier spread through Chrissy’s chest again when she realised that Ellie had picked an activity for the both of them, not just something that one of them would enjoy. For so long, Chrissy had been used to pushing her own needs aside to cater to what Lettie preferred to do instead. Thankfully, she and her sister had lots of similar interests, even if her sister was far more athletic than Chrissy could ever hope to be. Yoga and the occasional trip to the gym was fun, but as soon as Lettie began chattering on about trampolining and quad bikes and gymnastics class, Chrissy was lost. She knew she’d have to do it if Lettie needed a companion though.
Crafts had always been something they both loved but, again, Lettie got to pick. Things like crocheting and knitting were frustrating for her sister, who liked to be good at everything on her first try. Lettie had no patience for unpicking the wrong stitch and going back to the beginning, whereas Chrissy didn’t mind so much. But anytime Chrissy had suggested crocheting again, Lettie had scrunched her nose up in disapproval and shook her head. She preferred something like beading and bracelet making. The two of them had made an absurd amount of bracelets during the Eras Tour and even though they hadn’t managed to get tickets to the concert itself, Lettie had enjoyed trading bracelets with other fans outside the stadium.
It was a knee-jerk reaction for Chrissy to wonder if Ellie had something else for them to do instead. A bracelet-making kit, or some iron-on patches, perhaps. Lettie had been working on designing her own patch denim jacket lately. But then Chrissy realised, perhaps uncharitably, that her sister wasn’t here and so they could do what she wanted to do.
As soon as the thought entered her mind, she wanted to pop it like a bubble until it disappeared. It was probably very awful of her to be relieved that they could do what she wanted to do tonight because Lettie wasn’t around to say no.
But then again, when was the last time Chrissy had been able to choose an activity?
“I can do something small. I actually think Lettie would really like a bandana,” she said, smiling at Ellie as she softly trailed her fingers over the wool.
She lifted her head and nodded encouragingly.
“I’d like to see your coasters though!”
Obediently, Chrissy sat down on the sofa beside Ellie, a little stiffly at first before she forced herself to relax and crossed her legs underneath her. She continued to eye the various expanse of wool, as well as the snacks that Ellie had piled up for them. She hoped her ginger ale and chips weren’t lacking in comparison.
Tugging on the end of her braid, Chrissy lifted her head.
“Thank you again for inviting me, Ellie,” she said. “I’ve never actually done a girl’s night before. Pinterest didn’t put an emphasis on all the crafting there would be, but I’m excited.”
