After the deaths of two more black men at the hands of police this week, Who Cares About Actresses can only echo the sentiments of many others; we are saddened and horrified by the continued police violence and stand in support with Black Lives Matter. In the face of this, we look towards activism and art that is supporting and uplifting black voices. Documentary filmmaker Ashley Mills is currently in post-production for her doc Unapologetic. As Mills states:
Unapologetic is a feature-length documentary that explores the triumphs and necessary forfeits of three young Black women organizing for Black liberation in Chicago, IL. The film captures three campaigns over the course of a calendar year: the firing of Dante Servin, the off-duty cop who killed 22-year-old Rekia Boyd; the removal of State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez, a local official with a long history of failing to prosecute killer cops; and #SayHerName, an effort to make state violence against Black women and girls more visible.
Image: A quote from Omari Akil’s instagram
This quote from Omari Akil speaks to how many people are feeling after Terrence Crutcher and Keith Lamont Scott were both shot and killed by white police officers within days of each other. The quote highlights how the racist police shootings are often justified by the police and mainstream media outlets, while a white man like Brock Turner can be convicted of rape, portrayed favorably in the media, and only serve 3 months in jail.
And so we return to the activists and the artists working to dismantle the institutionalized racism that our country relies so heavily on. Ashley Mills is a Diverse Voices in Docs fellow with Kartemquin Films, and only just graduated from Northwestern last year. Who Cares About Actresses is so excited for this project, and we urge you to donate to the indiegogo.
