Turn Down For Whom?
Antipathy
DEFINITION: a deep feeling of dislike, an aversion or an enmity.
You know those horoscope things on Instagram? Where people (because yes, it really is just people uploading those pictures and thoughts) pretend like they have telepathy and a host of assorted powers?
I hate an antipathy towards them. Some people love them, but I’m pretty anti pathy if you get what I mean.
If that doesn’t work for you, then think of the teachers, guidance counselors and other people who tell you that there is only one real path to success. I’m pretty anti-pathy in that sense as well.
Acme
DEFINITION: the point at which someone or something is at its best, most beautiful or perfect.
I’m a believer in the idea that being a student (and I mean primary through high school) is not “much easier than actually having a job”. I get both sides of the argument. As an adult, a person has to worry about many more variables, like going from playing Snake to playing PacMan.
But I do believe that being a student has its fair share of difficulties, and its not necessarily when someone is at their acme, even if they have acne. (I know its cheesy, but mnemonics love cheese).
Impugn
DEFINITION: debate the truth, honesty or validity of something.
Okay, let’s be real here, English language.
Who sees this for the first time and sees im-pyoon?
...
Whatever the case, impyoon (not im-pug-ned) sounds like a pokémon.
I guess you could say that this Drifloon has a hardy nature.
Okay, I’m sorry.
Back to Pokémon. Honestly, we could debate over the idea of if the pokémon nowadays are really pokémon or if they’re just grapes with whipped cream on top of their heads. A metaphor, but you get what I’m saying.
I mean, how did the creators of Pokémon go from
to
Are you kidding?
Not going to start a fight or anything, but there’s some merit to what I’m saying. And, of course, if Pokémon is not your cup of tea, then you had a horrible childhood go for pugs. Debate whether or not pugs are dogs or just scrunched up balls of skin and fur.
Repeal
DEFINITION: revoke, nullify, cancel out.
When I see this word, I see repeat. Repeal is just not a word that sticks to my mind usually; honestly, it’s more something used in a political sense (in my mind) than anything else.
But we will work with what we have!
If you see repeat, go for it. Repeat brings to mind when a teacher has to tell a student something twice. By the time the teacher has to tell the student twice, the information has been revoked and completely nullified, like jeans that fit in the store but don’t fit at home.
*a moment of silence for all the deceptive jeans*
Fidelity
I randomly thought of this word while I was watching a drama and it wouldn’t leave me alone. Today, I remembered this horrible word and the fact that I should probably know it.
Hence, fidelity.
It means faithfulness to a person, cause or belief.
When I see this word, I think Fidel Castro, the former dictator of Cuba.
I also think of the song I’m Sorry Mrs. Jackson by Outkast. Actually an amazing song. You know, the line that goes “Know what I’m talking about? Jealousy, fidelity, envy. Cheating to beating...”
...
Maybe it was infidelity, but you get what my point.
Both Fidel Castro and Outkast show faithfulness to people, cases and/or beliefs. In Outkast’s case, the group is apologizing to the mother of a girl that they/he hurt. Outkast talks about they/he is still dedicated to the family and the girl enough to apologize and forgive the girl’s mother.
Then, in Fidel Castro’s case, well, if you’re a dictator, then I’m pretty sure you believe a lot in your own cause. Killing and abusing to get what you want and what you believe in? That’s devotion to your own cause, if misplaced.
Words Suck Sometimes
I’ve been doing CR sections every week since June, and yet there are always words that I see and manage to forget. A few of these?
GALVANIZE.
UGH GALVANIZE.
WHO NEEDS GALVANIZE?
it basically means “to shock into action”, like when you have an English project due on Tuesday and you realize right as you’re falling asleep on Monday that YOU HAVE A PROJECT DUE ON TUESDAY. I’d say that’s pretty galvanizing.
Then there’s eschew. This is pronounced s-choo according to Dictionary.com, but every time I try to spell it, I remember it as eh-shoe. Eschew means to abstain or keep away from.
Well, if someone was chewing a shoe, I’m pretty sure I would keep away from them him or her because singular.
Vernacular.
Ah, vernacular. I hate you.
Vernacular is like jargon except its based more around region and less around a job, so you can think of it as another way of saying dialect.
When I see vernacular, I think of geometry (don’t ask why), and geometry is really its own vernacular, even in the math sphere.

PSAT
2015, the year when freshmen and 8th graders finally took the PSAT.
And the year when I finally took the sophomore PSAT. Not going to say much (I consented not to say anything, just like everyone else spreading jokes about the test all over the Internet)--
--but I will say that while the inside joke pool this year isn’t as huge as it was in past years, it’s still pretty great. Just in case you need to read any articles written by adults acknowledging the gigantic inside joke that has become the PSAT, here’s a few links for you:
The Washington Post: How the PSAT Became The Best Source of Teen Memes You'll Never Understand.
Teens Took the PSAT and Immediately Turned Its Secret Contents Into Memes
Wolves, Cookies and Dinosaurs: What's On the New PSAT, According to Tweeting Tweens
Ah, the “secret content”. Yes.
Of course, if you aren’t the article-reading type, then Instagram has made a lovely little account for you: @psatof.2015
A note: This site helped me to figure out tricks for the difference between affect and effect.
Sated
DEFINITION: fully satisfied.
For me, sated is one of those words that sounds like other words, so sated never really feels like its own word. Well, in this case, that’s a good thing.
No matter what you think of, and I’m sure you can think of a lot of things, that word can be traced back to sated.
If you’re sedated, then what do you have to be upset about? You’re sedated! You’re getting happy juice pumped into you so you can sleep for awhile.
If you’re on sedative, same concept as sedated.
If it’s Saturday, then you’ve got a full day to do whatever you want. There’s no pressure of school for one whole day, and you can sleep however late.
You get the gist.
Go forth and conquer.
Foible
DEFINITION: a flaw in character.
Foible... feeble?
When you find someone’s foibles and poke at them, he or she becomes feeble.
How about another because that was too EZ.
LACERATE DEFINITION: to rip or tear.
If you’ve got a laser, like a really high quality, going through flesh laser, then yeah, you could cause some destruction. I mean... laser beams much?
...
#I keep on feeling like this isn’t enough
Okay, one more.
VIGNETTE DEFINITION: a brief, evocative account or episode.
I mean, c’mon. Vignettes? Vines? Vine was practically made just so people could remember what vignette means. All vines are brief, evocative accounts or episodes without full plot or story.
What are thoooooooooose?
They’re vine-ttes.
And they’re definitely evocative.
Insouciance
DEFINITION: casual lack of concern, general flippancy.
Well, this is a rather interesting inconvenient word.
Insouciance. Well, the first thing I see when I look at this is souc, which translates into a) soup (I could really go for some pho right now) and b) sous. Not like the French word, but like Suess. Dr.
So how about that pho.
Well honestly, I’m fine with anything as long as its soup. On a cold, rainy day? Yes. Just yes. Why exercise rigidity when you can exercise insouciance?
Then there’s Dr. Suess. Well, honestly, there are authors like Edgar Allen Poe and then there are authors like the original Doctor. On a spectrum of weirdness, Dr. Suess probably fits in somewhere near Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland, and everyone knows that guy was somewhat...
And when you’re about that life, you’re pretty mellow.
Unless you’re one of those angry drunks. Then I would guess insouciance isn’t the word for you.
...
Have some soup.
Inexorable
DEFINITION: impossible to stop or prevent.
As a freshman, I had a great student mentor. As a result, I knew who all the bad sophomore teachers were.
As a result, as a sophomore, I was able to avoid a lot of the bad teachers and the unfair teachers.
But there were some teachers that I couldn’t avoid, mostly because classes were packed and the freshman class was huge my sophomore year. I guess the lesson of this post is that no matter how hard you try, how many times you bribe you talk to your advisor or change your schedule, avoiding bad teachers and haters is inexorable.
How does this correlate to the world?
When you’re just done and want to just leave the room, you can’t exit. And in life, when you do end up leaving the room, there are more difficult people on the other side.
Cause...
In... exit... able...
Fear not, this is why words like friends and genuine and sanguine exist. #They Aren’t Just SAT Words
Corroboration
DEFINITION: confirmation from evidence.
Anyone who works hard and takes school seriously probably knows the danger of the group project.
It sucks for the person on the very left, especially when he or she can’t say anything to the teacher.
So when you have to do a collaboration and you can pick your own partners--
--make sure to do a corroboration so that you end up with the right people.
Kindle
Definition: to start a fire
The very first thing I thought of was, of course, the Amazon Kindle Fire.
So I thought “WOAH OMG I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT AMAZON IS SO CLEVER LOL LOL OMG GG”
But keep in mind that kindle can also mean to inspire or in a way start fire in someone else. Like “Beatrice kindled a spark of hope in Kraig”
Discursive
DEFINITION: going from subject to subject, rambling.
Viviacious
DEFINITION: full of life.
Rue
DEFINITION: to regret.
