If Emerald Fennell, Jacob Elordi, or other people involved with the new "Wuthering Heights" movie address the "white Heathcliff" complaints, what will they most likely say?

The themes of this story transcend race

The original book is racist, it's better to make him white

In 19th century England, "dark skin" just meant mildly dusky

The book's narrators are unreliable, including about his race

Race doesn't matter, just casting the best possible actor

We want him to be a character "everyone" can relate to

Even if “the best possible actor” option is used, in WHAT world is Jacob Elordi the best possible actor for Heathcliff??

They deadass made Heathcliff an all American jock 😭😭

Even if it wasn’t racially accurate, past white actors who played Heathcliff all had this certain wolfish or swarthy look to them, even without the swarthy look, Tom did a brilliant job of harnessing Heathcliff’s menacing presence. Timothy Dalton, Ralph Fiennes, Laurence Olivier, Ian McShane, Tom Hardy, Ken Hutchison etc they all had something “dark” about them in their manner. And the makeup/aesthetics brought that out bad wigs and all.

When I see those actors playing Heathcliff, I could Heathcliff not the actor but with Jacob? Get his Euphoria ass out of there. The last thing we need is Nate Jacobs in the moors 😭

It's so fucking funny to me that I keep seeing art portraying Cathy as being this ephemeral gentle goddess figure looming as a figure of comfort and softness for Heathcliff when in the book she was probably just as if not more angry than him all the time to the point she would literally Anger herself sick if she wasn't allowed to do as she pleased

I mean probably accurate to how Heathcliff views her at least but still

I don’t know if I’m just getting older or what but I’m reading Wuthering Heights for the first time since high school and more and more it’s becoming obvious to me that Heathcliff was mishandled disastrously as a child.

Like obviously having a bad childhood doesn’t excuse you from being a terrible person, yadda yadda yadda, but there are so many places in the story where you can see glimmers of the kind of life Heathcliff could have had as an adult, but he’s beaten down over and over again and he really did love Cathy so much and even she mistreats him! He could have been okay!!!
