Today we remember victims of Holodomor - Soviet-created artificial famine that disproportionately affected the Ukrainian people.

It is a tradition to light a candle on your window sill once it gets dark - as I am not currently home, this shall be a substitution until I am able to do so.

If you've never looked up the Holodomor, you should do it. It was a completely man-made famine, created by Soviet policies -- first by a disastrous attempt to force Ukrainian peasants to collectivize in order to be more in line with a proper communist economic model, which caused a drop in agricultural production, and second by the Soviet Union demanding that the country still meet its grain requirements to feed the rest of the empire. Soldiers took grain from people's houses. They poked sticks into the ground to find buried cashes of grain. They took seed grain that people kept to plant the following year. They shot children who would go back into the fields after dark to try to collect any grains of wheat that had been missed during the harvest. They sent people who escaped into the cities back to the countryside. And they pretended that it wasn't happening. Even in the cities in Ukraine -- which were experiencing severe food shortages, but not outright starvation the way the countryside was -- people were not allowed to speak of the famine. Everyone knew it was happening, even outside of Ukraine, but no one was allowed to talk about it. Records were destroyed. Mass graves were hidden. For decades afterwards, people who spoke about it were arrested as dissidents. That makes it hard to know the total death toll, but estimates range from 3 million to 12 million people. There's also evidence that Ukraine was targeted this way precisely because it resisted efforts to let the Soviet Union wipe away its culture and language and national identity and make everyone more Russian. Which means this was arguably an actual genocide. And even if it doesn't meet the legal definition of genocide, it was still a government-made famine that killed millions of people.
