I’ve been thinking how much Say Anything really influenced me as a teenager and how the sound changed SO much after Anarchy My Dear. My favs are the Self-Titled album and the first Two Tongues album… anyway yeah I just feel differently about it now. How do you guys feel? Is anyone still on Tumblr?

I still have a place for SA in my heart, it truly got me through the hardest times in my teens. (I can’t believe I started this blog 8yrs ago and my favorite album came out 10yrs ago! WILD. Max wrote that album at 25/26, which is my age now omg) Anyway, I can’t connect to the new stuff, mostly it’s the sound but the lyrics hit me in a weird, uncomfortable place sometimes. I’ve definitely changed and so has the band.

Hope everyone is doing well! What other music have you been connecting to these days?

Two Tongues is a project created by Saves the Day’s Chris Conley and Say Anything’s Max Bemis as a chance for the two close friends to collaborate musically. The band’s name reflects not only their dual vocals, but the union of two very different musicians, and much of their music, especially on their first release, is about the beginning of new relationships, whether they be romantic or platonic.

(This fun interview from Vagrant records finds Bemis and Conley expounding more upon their ideas and creative process and partnership, and is quite worth checking out.)

Two Tongues was originally filled out by (now former) members of Saves the Day and Say Anything, but in recent years has simply become a passion project for Bemis and Conley, a chance to collaborate together, incorporate their family into their music, and simply follow their muse. Conley and Bemis played every instrument themselves on their second album, Two Tongues Two; Sherri DuPree-Bemis, singer of Eisley and Perma and Max Bemis’ wife, sang a track on each of Two Tongues’ releases; Conley’s daughter, Luella, picked up keyboards for a song on Two.

When it comes to Two Tongues, I’m most likely to be listening to “Wowee Zowee,” “Dead Lizard,” “Tremors,” or “Barcelona,” but the video for “Azalea” [embedded above] is truly a thing of beauty. It’s about friendship, freedom, youth, and nature, and makes me nostalgic (and more than a little misty-eyed) for a kind of childhood I never really had. God it’s powerful, and even though it’s starring younger versions of Conley and Bemis, still captures the spark of friendship between the two men that makes Two Tongues in the first place.

I find it strange with all this coverage on Max Bemis & Kayne West being friends and all when Bemis refers to ‘hating’ him in Hate Everyone guess something changed. I’ve seen some of Sherri’s vines where he dances to Kayne’s music with his kids in recent years. so they must be all good now.
