Let Me In (20 Cube) MV Breakdown
(this will address only the MV itself, the lyrics theories will be a separate post.)
Video opens to the boys standing on boxes under sheets, as if they are in storage. This is because they are, literally, being stored in the museum.
Sunghoon whispers something, which is in reverse. “I’ll give you my bl–d.”
They are also shown to be in a glass box together, hinting that whatever they are stored in, or some part of it, is on display.
We have our first sighting of Sunoo with the scratch on his cheek.
Now the boys appear to be normal teenage boys, who have perhaps broken into a museum at night and are exploring the halls and the archives.
Sunoo picks up the blue drink and takes a sip. There is no scratch on his cheek.
The moment Sunoo drinks the blue drink, a box in the back of the room begins to glow red. This draws the attention of all the boys, who move towards it.
As the boys are standing before the red box, there is a MAJOR change in their behavior, AND Sunoo now has the scratch on his cheek. I believe this is the first of two pivotal moments. This is the moment when the vampires, who were trapped in an object inside the museum, have started to take hold of the human boys. They do not have full control of them yet, but they have a foothold.
The (partially possessed?) human boys now head out onto the floor of the museum, and seem to be actively searching for something rather than just playing around as they were before. The mood is different.
We also see the boys as astronauts. Perhaps a metaphor for them being suspended in space and time? But Jungwon notices a black square in the sky and moves towards it. As Jungwon lifts off the ground to fly towards it, the others appear to be surprised and concerned, with the notable exception of Sunoo, who waves happily at him as he goes. I believe this is Jungwon noticing that a gateway has been opened, a way out of their prison. The other boys don’t understand what’s happening, but Sunoo does. Why? Because he has the strongest foothold in the real world right now. It was his doppelganger who drank the blue liquid and initiated the red glow.
The moment Jungwon touches the black square, we see the boys appear in what seems to be a fake forest, like a stage or a museum display. They are no longer “suspended” in space and time, but they are not quite yet freed from their prison.
There’s a LOT more of the red color here, like what was coming from the box earlier.
Jungwon is now sitting atop an empty grave, peering down into it. Perhaps a metaphor for him being undead, or being resurrected in this moment.
Sunoo and Heeseung are having a play fight with branches and appear to be happy, until Heeseung scratches Sunoo’s cheek. Sunoo’s mood immediately changes, and he seems threatening.
Sunghoon is carving a 5th notch into the tree with his knife. I believe this is a reference to how long they have been in captivity - 500 years.
Again we see the boys exploring the museum floor. It is very obvious that the boys in the forest and the boys on the floor are two different sets of people, but somehow linked together.
Jay is the first to actively attempt to escape imprisonment, running at the wall. The others follow him eagerly, attacking the wall in the forest.
At the same time, the human boys in the museum see something. We are not shown what they are looking at, but it is obvious they’ve located whatever they were searching for.
The glass the humans are staring at begins to crack and shatter as the vampires assault the wall inside their prison one more time. The wall suddenly becomes another black square, and they eagerly run through it together.
The music changes. A light shines into the museum, over the human boys. We see Jungwon’s eyes change color. Everything is frozen in time. This is the second pivotal moment of the video, the moment in which, I believe, the vampires have fully possessed the humans.
We see the boys from the beginning scene throwing off the sheets, signifying that they have been freed from their imprisonment.
All 7 now peer down into the open grave. They have been resurrected.
Vampire Sunoo throws the blue liquid onto the floor, which I believe is a safety measure on his part, to ensure they will not be trapped again, and to cover their tracks.
We once again see the boys encased in glass. This suggests that the humans are not dead, and that their souls are literally now trapped. Are they trapped in their own bodies, or did the vampires simply switch places with them and send the humans to their former prison?
The glass cracks but does not shatter, implying that perhaps the vampires’ hold on the human bodies is weak, or impermanent.
