Scarlet at Hogwarts

Writing down a bit more about my Hogwarts Legacy MC, specifically some trivia about anything regarding the school itself and how Scarlet relates to it.

- The House

She doesn't talk about it unless directly asked or when feeling in a particularly sharing mood, but Scarlet actively chose to be in Slytherin, despite the Sorting Hat assigning her to Ravenclaw: despite her appreciation for the intelligence and wisdom promoted by her assigned House, Scarlet always felt more compelled by the determination and resourcefulness of Slytherin, even despite Professor Fig warning her about its dark legacy of Pureblood supremacy.

((Plus - and this is deeply embarassing for her to admit - even before finding out magic was real Scarlet has always loved reading stories about wizards and witches and after finding out that even Merlin himself had allegedly been a Slytherin, she couldn't really pass on the opportunity to join his same House.))

- The School Subjects

Scarlet is sincerely interested in History of Magic, she swears, she would drink Veritaserum to show how sincere she is, the problem isn't the subject itself, it's how Professor Binns teaches it! For real, Scarlet devoured her second-hand textbook on the history of the wizarding world before the school year started, so she feels really guilty around the ghost teacher whenever she doesn't manage to stay sharp during his classes and really likes to chat with him... whenever she can also do something else meanwhile to keep herself awake.

Another class Scarlet had been pretty interested in since the start was Potions and she ends up being pretty good at it thanks to her motivation: she often sends healing potions back home for her younger sister, who suffers from poor health after surviving tubercolosis a few years before. Aside from that, Professor Sharp's stern and no-nonsense teaching method reminds her of her mother's cooking lessons and so she approaches Potions in the same way. With a bit of nostalgia, even.

Care of Magical Creatures may not be the one class Scarlet excels at, but for sure is one she enjoys enormously: she has always loved animals and magical beasts are included, she's absolutely thrilled for every new lesson!

She hates Flying. With a burning passion. Or, to be more precise, she hates flying with a broom: she's perfectly at ease and even enjoys herself when she's on Highwind or Caligo's back, but brooms make her feel like she's hanging over the void on a thin, unfeeling stick. She followed Everett Clopton during that detour during the first lesson because he was being kind and she appreciated the gesture, but after that thank you and never again!

- The School Grounds

Scarlet really loves Hogwarts' castle: she loves to explore it, find new places in it, learn its history, chatting with the ghosts and the living portraits... But when, at times, it becomes kind of overwhelming for her, she used to retreat always in the same place: Professor Fig's classroom and, always after asking, his office. Who knows where she will go now that she knows she will never find her mentor in there, anymore...

Some random facts about my Hogwarts Legacy MC, Scarlet Colombo:

- her parents named her and her sister Scarlet and Lily because they wanted them to have an easier time integrating among English citizens, but also chose respectively Beatrice and Lucrezia as their second names as a tribute to their Italian roots;

- having to deal with Fastidio's tricks caused Scarlet to develop a phobia of mannequins;

- Scarlet prefers to solve things diplomatically whenever possible, but won't hesitate to use her mean right hook when necessary (as her dad says "you should never start a fight, but you should also know how to finish it");

- she's a bit terrified of flying on brooms, but is really at ease on Highwing's back;

- her family knows almost nothing about what really happened to her during her first year at Hogwarts, but they're eager to meet the friends she made there and thrilled about magic in general;

- about that, they were very grateful to Professor Fig for mentoring Scarlet and sincerely mourned him when she told them about his death;

- there are rumours in her family about her great-grandmother having been a witch

Scarlet Colombo (My Hogwarts Legacy MC)

I got bit by the Hogwars Legacy bug, thought a bit too much about my own MC and so I decided "why not?" and I'm writing about her during my free time. ^^

Full name: Scarlet Beatrice Colombo

Nicknames: Scar, Dove or Pigeon (both play on her surname, by some Pigeon is used as an insult)

Blood Status: Muggleborn

Ethnicity/Nationality: Italian, raised in London, England

Hogwarts House: Slytherin

Wand: made of pine wood, with a core of dragon heartstrings, 12 and one quarter inches, discreetly flexible

Scarlet's family moved from Italy to England while her mother was pregnant with her, so she never got the chance to see her home country, but still grew up surrounded by its culture and learned the language thanks to her parents moving to Clerkenwell, where many Italian immigrants established themselves after the 1850s - the area is still considered London's "Little Italy" to the present day.

Despite growing in a poor neighbourhood, Scarlet had a relatively happy childhood, until, when she was 12, her younger sister, Lily, only 10 years old at the time, got sick with tubercolosis and the family went through financial strain to try and cure her. Miraculously, the little girl survived, even though her health still remains frail.

When her magic finally manifested, Scarlet started thinking that her latent talent may have helped her sister survive and, despite some initial doubts about it, threw herself enthusiastically into learning how to control it, first with the help of Professor Fig and then later at Hogwarts.

And the rest is history. ^^

I may decide to write down a bit more about her in the future, but for now I'm thanking @all-4-ominis and @thepurplearchive for listening to my comments and inspiring me.☺️

You are aware waterboy is an adult? He isn’t a teen boy who can’t think. He’s 24. Twenty four. How is it too young for Flambae? Are u 16?

Myself? I'm 31.

Regarding the age-gap between Waterboy and Flambae, there are still 14 years between them considering Chad is 38. Which is perfectly legal, they're both adults, but makes it not really palatable to me as a ship, especially considering that I see a lot of myself in one of the two of them: at 24, I was still too busy figuring myself out to go looking for a date with an older guy and would have honestly even felt a bit scared if one as intense as Flambae approached me.

So, yeah, Waterbae doesn't work for me. I can see why it does for some and all the respect for it, but I'll just stick to the Flambert corner of the fandom.

A bg3 specific OC ask game

For my first playthrough, it was my Selune cleric's mentor and mother figure, who had been killed by Sharrans not long before the start of the game: the Emperor thought that it was a good way to manipulate him by making him think his mother was guiding him one last time.

For my second one - where I played a monk dragonborn Durge -, it was Ifan Ben Mezd from "Divinity Original Sin 2": I realized that I made my Durge look a lot like my lizard lady from that game, so I decided she's actually her reincarnation in another world and that the Dream Guardian looked like her lover from another life.

Hot take: While I'm a firm believer that Jayce and Viktor do want each other carnally, I think the total absence of sexual desire wouldn't make their relationship any less valid — and certainly not any less romantic.

We're pretty used to lovers in fiction being ready to die with or for each other, solely because they're so drawn to one another. The whole I burn, I pine, I perish thing.

But imagine doing all that — the world-altering stakes, the ride-or-die loyalty, the dramatic speeches and borderline self-destruction — without lust even factoring into it. Just because you’re that into how they do science?

Real.

There’s something so unhinged — and kind of tender — about loving someone that much intellectually. About recognizing a mind that complements yours so perfectly, it eclipses everything else. Not because you’re not capable of desire, but because it just… doesn’t even rank.

They’re not trying to get into each other’s pants. They’re trying to get into each other’s prototypes.

And if that’s not the most intense academic romance ever written, I don’t know what is. (For the record I do think they fuck post canon though)

As an ace person who sometimes falls under the demi category, I'm saying this: Jayce and Viktor wouldn't even consider each other attractive if they hadn't clicked first on an intellectual and spiritual level.

The sexual attraction is at the very bottom of the list of reasons about why they feel so connected to each other.

Non-Crow Rook wanting Lucanis to ditch the Crows not because they have any problems with the Crows themselves being essentially a state sanctioned criminal organization made up of killers for hire that do horrible things on the regular, but because being First Talon is making Lucanis miserable and they want him to be happy. Absolutely no care or consideration about the fact that the Crows are essentially the mob, just that their man is unhappy and they can't stand that.

Why did Jayce apologize and not Mel if Mel was in the wrong?

Mel committed the unforgivable sin of manipulating Jayce: Only using him for more access to hextech, for more votes in the council, manipulated him to make weapons, to engage in the corruption and/or to pull him away from Viktor.

Jayce finally calls her out on her b.s. and Mel doesn’t apologize. Instead Jayce is the one that apologizes and calls himself an idiot and an ass.

Now, if you were unsatisfied with this interaction bc you feel as if Mel did these crimes and didn’t even apologize, might I suggest that maybe she didn’t apologize bc she DIDN’T commit those crimes?

Maybe she used him for hextech at first. He was a means to an end initially (as any other relationship in the show started out) but got closer to him and actually blossomed into a true romantic relationship. Maybe she did put him on the council. Why? Prolly not out of the goodness of her own heart, but she helped him navigate politics once he was on it, comforted him abut Viktor’s diagnosis, supported him with Heimerdinger’s removal, comforted him after about that decision and stalls the council to give him space, SUGGESTS weapons to both him AND Viktor, supports him and Viktor’s request for peace in the undercity giving up the possibility of being accepted back to her home, comforts him about Viktor’s comatose state, and more.

Maybe Jayce was projecting his anger about how things turned out and his own guilt on Mel when he came back. Maybe that’s the reason she didn’t apologize and he did.

I mean…we see vi call cait out on her allowing Ambessa to use her to hurt the undercity and Cait says “I know”. These are the same writers and this happens in the same episode. So why didn’t they make Mel say “I know”? Why make Jayce apologize?

…or the writers are just stupid and forgot all S1. I’d go with the former option.

Let's also add the fact that Jayce has never been stupid - merely naive - and that putting all the faults of his actions on Mel actually DIMINISHES his complexity as a character.

Because at that point he becomes just a poor victim of circumstances rather than an active agent of his own story.

An agent that got influenced by external forces - and I'm not talking only about Mel, I'm also saying the Council, Heimerdinger, VIKTOR, the mage that saved him... - but that ultimately made his own choices.

And THAT is why he lashes out at her but then regrets its and apologies: that's Jayce recognizing his own responsibilities and growing as a person.

I’ve been kind of obsessed with making these lately, so here’s one specific to my fave assassin (hopefully with less typos than the last one I uploaded)

1) Warden Manwë Surana, my first and still my favorite Origins protagonist.

2) Manwë initially thought Zevran was weird but funny: she was still pretty naive by the time of that fateful assassination attempt and found the idea that someone could try to flirt their way out of death amusing.

Zevran, instead, was amazed by how fierce and powerful she was in battle and then found her to be cute in her enthusiasm and curiosity.

They developed a soft spot for each other pretty much from the get-go, but at the start Zevran was mostly trying to survive and Manwë was still too hung up on her crush on Cullen to even consider another man.

3) Manwë loves being a mage and in Zevran she found the first person who had been curious about magic and wanted to hear about it from her. Zevran, instead, realized that Manwë's curiosity and self-awareness made her pretty open-minded and that he could talk to her about his life as a Crow without having to expect judgement.

.

4) They definitely had a slow burn: when they first met, Manwë was still sure she would one day ride toward the sunset with Cullen and Zevran was still mourning Rinna, so neither of them were expecting or wanting to fall in love. Still, there was a lot of chemistry going on pretty much from the very start and they became quickly attached to the hip.

Things turned physical between them during the events of Orzammar, specifically after facing the Broodmother: traumatized by that event, Manwë sought out Zevran for comfort and she basically had a "Dead Girl Walking" moment that led to their first night together.

It was only veeeeeery later on, while in Denerim, after facing off against Taliesin and the Crows, that they both fully realized their feelings and committed to the relationship.

5) Manwë initially had some passing knowledge about the Crows but no real opinion about and no involvement with them: they were just some assassin guild from a country she never expected to ever see.

It's mostly through Zevran - and a bit through Leliana- that she learned more about the organization: to be short... she really hates them. Sees them as a necessary evil for Antiva, but hates them.

Though, by learning about them she grew closer to Zevran by finding parallels to her situation in the Circle that made her more aware of the unfairness of her conditions as a mage.

6) When Zevran first offered the earring to her, Manwë refused it: at that point she had just realized she was in love with him and so was unable to accept it.

Now, she sees it as her wedding ring and had a replica forged for Zevran before he left for Antiva after the Fifth Blight.

7) They. Are. Insufferable. And also more than a bit terrifying.

They're Gomez and Morticia Addams, but smug about it: for example, Morrigan met them again after Inquisition, commented on Zevran still being attached to Manwë's leg like a dog in heat and by reply Manwë licked his cheek and woofed. While staring at her.

((This occurrence, though, might have also been caused by the friendly anymosity still going on between the two mages.))

Buuuuuut they also have been putting the fear of the Black Shadow into the Crows together, enough so that various members of the guild even fear saying their names out loud.

8) Aside from spreading fear through the Crows and forcing them through change, I see them retiring into anonimity, in a beachside house, obscenely happy and horny together until they die. Idealistically, Manwë would've also found the cure for the Calling, but otherwise I also like the idea of her preferring to die while in a beautiful place in the company of the love of her life, rather than down in the Deep Roads.

9) Manwë tends to overwork herself on her research for a cure for the Calling, so Zevran always makes sure she feeds herself and remembers to sleep, even picking her up to move her away from her lab if the needs arise. Also, he's more than willing to be her sounding board when she needs someone to talk to out loud.

Zevran sometimes still slips on the mask of the confident and shallow rogue, even around her, and Manwë became good at recognizing when it happens and is quick to drop whatever she's doing to call his bluff and make him be honest about what is troubling him. She goes awfully softer than usual with him during these moments, speaking exclusively Antivan and using pet names.

10) Zevran is probably more academically advanced in magic than most non-mages in Thedas due to how much Manwë talked to him about it and even took the time to actually teach him.

And anyone who may try to put their hands on Manwë after she exhausted her mana will find out she has an hidden dagger and knows exactly where to plant it to make you regret getting too close to her.

11) As I said above, Manwë tends to overwork herself and that is especially true during her research for a cure for the Calling: while she's paranoid about wasting time and risking not finding it before it's too late for her, Zevran is afraid that she may lose on her best years and the short time they have together.

It's something that really does put their relationship at risk for a while, but they manage to work through it.

12) It's not something I ever considered, but Manwë would definitely trust Zevran to tattoo her and she would choose a griffon: even with their shady parts, she loves the Grey Wardens for what being one of them meant for her and is proud of what she accomplished among their ranks. Also, she would never have met Zevran if not for them, so... <3

I'm being DEAD serious here guys. Make problematic ocs. I'm telling you. It's so much fun. And easier to get invested in them sometimes because they really STICK OUT in your brain. You fall in love with them.

For help developing problematic ocs try out these two methods

Method one: think of a problematic choice your oc will make. This could be; abandoning their children, killing a sibling, siding with the oppressor whatever. Work backwards from there. What are the implications of someone who would make that decision.

Method two: give them a motivation and work forwards from there. For example; they have the motivation to survive no matter what, they need to be the ruler of their society, they will not go against a specific religious/moral code etc. now make sure every decision they ever make is in line with that and crucially put things in their way that'll make them make fucked up decisions to get what they want.

Now! You have! A fucked up oc! And you will love them! I promise

Hi, good morning, afternoon or evening, depends on whenever you're reading this. ^^

I was rereading some of the older entries on your "Second Chances" series and I found myself particularly appreciating your decision about not having Jayce and Viktor becoming parents. I think it makes a lot of sense with how you've written them and I appreciate it even more within the context of them knowing that they DID have kids in other timelines: their talk about this feels really mature and acknowledges the fact that their relationship doesn't need to always progress in a certain way for them to be happy together.

Were you set on them remaining a childless couple since the start or did you ever consider the contrary? I was curious about it because the craze about the "cottage by the river with four kids" seems still far from being over and it was interesting to see someone going decidedly against the flow. XD

I want to start by saying thank you for this ask! And I’m really glad you’re liking the story. Like I’m kicking my feet I’m so excited.

And I also want to say that the idea of Jayce and Viktor getting thrown somewhere by the anomaly and adopting four kids in a cottage by the stream is adorable! Love that for them!

But I always knew that in the main timeline they would make a decision to not have any children. There is an au that exists where they do have a daughter, it was shown really briefly. And I did that honestly so I could have that au to possibly play with and expand on, like I do others. But main timeline it was always going to be a discussion they had and decided against. Even though there’s a part of each of them that wants to. Viktor is genuinely sad about the decision because he thinks Jayce would be so amazing as a dad- he’s known this whole time that there are possible lives where they are dads or Jayce is a dad or he’s a dad, and those lives are beautiful too. Just not in this timeline. But now Jayce knows too and that’s what prompts the conversation, really.

They both fully acknowledge their attachment is unhealthy. And it wouldn’t be fair to try to add someone to that. They’re just way too caught up in each other this timeline. And they’re happy. They have their found family and each other and they’re doing good work. They’re fulfilled by that.

But anyway yeah, as Vi said in another entry, "there isn't much space for others in that bubble of theirs".

I like the fact that their codependency is something widely acknowledged and that has consequences: they wouldn't be fit as parents, they can't stay away from each other for too long, flashbacks from other timelines can suddenly interrupt their days and halt activities with other people...

It's very realistic that them being how they are does indeed have an impact to the people around them.

Started out as a pure, sheltered ray of sunshine, the events of Veilguard are basically the first, big sequence of traumas of his life, but he came out on the other side still fundamentally optimistic, even though a lot hardened and more ruthless.
