Layla was hunched over her desk in her and Marc's place, muttering to herself beneath the piles of paperwork. Questioning her choices.

Just because she was Taweret's avatar, didn't mean she was giving up on her career as an archaeologist in her free time, following in her father's footsteps.

Okay, maybe she'd gone a little bit off by selling stolen relics and returning them, and keeping a few.

But she was still being an archaeologist!

Unfortunately, that meant a shit ton of paperwork, not just the fun of field work.

She felt like she was going crazy, writing papers, requests, reviews, signing things, emails. She had at least 6 different papers and her laptop open in front of her. Plus many different books open about the current sites she was working on.

Alright. She was sure she was going crazy.

She was trying to get it all done at once. She wasn't unsuccessful at all, simply overworking herself.

The windows in front of her desk were closed but the curtains open, the sun setting in front of her, the city relatively empty. Rain drizzling

That was until she felt a hand on her shoulder, snapping her out of her haze as she turned around in the roller chair she was in and looked up to see who was greeting her.

Wow I didn't know divorce required that much paperwork. [Jakes tone is clearly teasing, removing his hand for Layla's shoulder and leaning his side against the desk]

What's all this for? [Jake flicks at one of the many stacks of paperwork on her desk] You seem a little stressed...

[Jake begins to turn Layla's roller chair around slowly with his foot, tilting his head to the side in amusement as she rotates around] You can take a break and hang out with me though, right?

Layla laughed quietly, her tone fond, turning her head towards him. “Hi, Jake.”

“It’s archaeology stuff. Not the fun part, obviously. The paperwork and signing stuff.” She grumbled, a small pout pulling onto her lips, her head in her hands.

She let him turn her chair to face him, slowly. Raising a playful eyebrow at him. Her face exhausted. “I guess, if I have to.” She joked.

Fantastic! [Jake puts out two gloved hands excitedly, offering her tired form some help out of the chair]

The weather's been a little off but I can drive us somewhere instead. Ya hungry? I know a few good places with pancakes that should be open bout now.

[Jake wanders into the kitchen mindlessly, picking up his hat from the counter and stealing one of Marcs jackets from the nearby clothes rack. He always felt slightly cold, even when indoors.]

“Pancakes sound great, actually. I’m fully starving.” She sighed, shrugging her own of Marc’s jackets on. “Where have you got in mind?”

She hummed quietly, closing a few books on her desk and turning her laptop off. Rubbing her tired eyes and putting her phone in her pocket.

There's this nice little diner open till two AM or something like that, [Jake takes Marc's keys and wallet out of his pockets, swapping them for his own]

I like to stop there after work if you know what I mean. I know the owners too- good people- I saved their kid from a mugging once so I eat free.

[He swings open the front door, holding it for Layla with a flourish] After you. ...You don't think Marc will mind us takin' his stuff, right?

Layla spoke a soft ‘wow’, grabbing her own set of keys. “That’s cool. Doesn’t sound familiar, but free pancakes are a win.” She walked through the front door, waiting for him.

She laughed at that. “He’ll be fine. If he’s got a problem with it, he can take it up with me. I’m his wife, he can’t say no to me.”

Yeah I guess that's true! [Jake laughs to himself, removing his keys from his pocket and locking the front door] Marc can say no to me I guess, but I don't gotta listen.

[Jake begins walking out of the building towards his car, keeping shoulder to shoulder with Layla, shivering slightly from the light rain and cold] ...You know Marc loves you a lot, right? He would do almost anything for ya, I'm sure of it.

Layla sighed quietly, leaning in to Jake a little. The cold London air was biting, and wet. She watched him unlock his car, and she carefully nodded at his statement.

“Yeah, I hope he does. I know he does.” She gave a weak smile at the thought. “He’s just… got an odd way of showing it sometimes, right? But I love him.”

Yeah... [Jake opens the door for her, moving to the trunk and retrieving a blanket] He's always struggled with that sort of thing. He's scared... we both are.

[Jake offers her over the quilt before getting in the car himself and turning the key, changing the subject slightly] No point in you freezing to death on the drive over, right? [Jake pats the dashboard of the old taxi fondly] She is the most beautiful vehicle ever created, but the heating systems do need some work... I'll- I'll- get to that this weekend or something.

“I know.” Layla nodded, smiling gently at him handing her a blanket. She covered herself in it as she settled into the passenger seat.

She snickered. “I think I can survive a little cold. But the blanket’s certainly helping.” She teased. Shaking her head and grinning at his affection for the car. “Yeah, but the minute you try, Steven and Marc are gonna be loudly judging you the entire time on your methods.”

[Jake rolled his eyes at that, smiling whilst shifting the car into reverse and backing out of his parking spot] There's a reason I'm the mechanic out of us three and not them. Win and doubt, Marc will just throw duck tape on it and call it a day.

Steven... [Jake thinks for a moment] ...I think he could maybe build an IKEA cabinet. With help.

... Have you ever been into fixing stuff?

Layla laughed fondly. “He would definitely do that. I’m pretty sure I remember him doing that with our sink in our old apartment when it was leaking, I wouldn’t put it past him.”

“I mean, Steven’s out up his own bookshelves, so why not a cabinet?” She beamed at the thought. “But definitely not anything to do with cars.”

“Well, I was usually the one to fix broken shit in the apartment. My dad taught me, always wanted me to be independent. It’s not my favourite thing to do, though.”

Yeah, understandable. [Jake enters the roadway, feeling that guilt- Marc's guilt- rising whenever Mr. El Faouly was mentioned. He falls quite for a moment, hesitating to ask]

Hey Layla... can I- umm- ask you a personal question?

... Ya know I hear you talk a lot about your dad, but I've never heard anything about your mom...

Layla hummed softly, her gaze finding him as she tugged the blanket around her a little tighter. "Oh, yeah." "Well, I actually never knew her. She died when she gave birth to me." She explained quietly. "That's probably why I talk so much about my dad instead."

[Oh- Jake didn't know that- and neither did the other two, as it seems. Jake can feel Layla looking at him, but is unable to meet her gaze, instead focusing on the road with a clear look of sadness]

... I'm really sorry, Layla. [Jake pauses, unsure why he feels like apologizing for something that wasn't his fault] ... I won't bring it up again.

... I bet she'd be proud of you, though.

She shrugged softly. “It’s okay, really, Jake. It’s been a long time, you can bring it up. I’m glad you asked, I don’t think I’ve mentioned it before.” She insisted, gently shaking her head.

But she smiled at that statement. “I hope so. She was an archaeologist too.”

Archaeologist, huh? [Jake laughs slightly] That seems to run in the family.

[Jake thinks for a moment, expression growing slightly more serious if Layla were to be watching] ...I don't know what Marc's parents did. Doesn't really matter- being a cabbie is by far the most honorable profession. [He smiles a little bit, clearly aware that driving a car was the least of his job description]

She laughed at that. “I think it’s a mandatory part of the bloodline.”

She hummed quietly, nodding. “Or maybe being the avatar of an ancient Egyptian god might be up there too?” She teased.

How has Taweret being doing anyways? I know you still go on missions and stuff, I guess I've just never asked what all you've been up to

Layla shrugged. "Taweret is Taweret. She's always talking about something. A little too excited, asking me questions all the time. But other than that she's good. I think I'm starting to get used to her chatter." She snickered softly.

Well that definitely sounds more pleasant than Khonshu- Who is a joy to work for by the way.[Jake quickly adds the last part on, not risking the birds temper tantrum if he were to be listening]

How dangerous are your missions anyway? I know you've joined Marc on a few of his, but I guess I don't actually know the focus of your work.

She raised an eyebrow. “I wouldn’t describe him as a joy. Although he’s probably having a hissy fit hearing me say that.”

“I mean, I wouldn’t say they’re too dangerous. Taweret is a goddess of women and childbirth. If I’m not helping Marc, I’m helping women in dangerous situations and trouble and any other civilians along the way. It’s actually pretty cool.”

You get to actually help people- I know I do too, but I wish I got to... ya know... Help them directly.

[talking out threats was helping. It made people's lives safer, it protected the travelers of the night- but deep down Jake knew he could do without all the violence.]

That made her think, putting her feet on the dashboard playfully. "I don't know. Maybe a baker. What about you?"

I want to work an animal shelter. Take care of all the cute pequeños gatos. [He smiles to himself] but I'd only work part time so I could still be a cabbie. I like that too

Layla was hunched over her desk in her and Marc's place, muttering to herself beneath the piles of paperwork. Questioning her choices.

Just because she was Taweret's avatar, didn't mean she was giving up on her career as an archaeologist in her free time, following in her father's footsteps.

Okay, maybe she'd gone a little bit off by selling stolen relics and returning them, and keeping a few.

But she was still being an archaeologist!

Unfortunately, that meant a shit ton of paperwork, not just the fun of field work.

She felt like she was going crazy, writing papers, requests, reviews, signing things, emails. She had at least 6 different papers and her laptop open in front of her. Plus many different books open about the current sites she was working on.

Alright. She was sure she was going crazy.

She was trying to get it all done at once. She wasn't unsuccessful at all, simply overworking herself.

The windows in front of her desk were closed but the curtains open, the sun setting in front of her, the city relatively empty. Rain drizzling

That was until she felt a hand on her shoulder, snapping her out of her haze as she turned around in the roller chair she was in and looked up to see who was greeting her.

Wow I didn't know divorce required that much paperwork. [Jakes tone is clearly teasing, removing his hand for Layla's shoulder and leaning his side against the desk]

What's all this for? [Jake flicks at one of the many stacks of paperwork on her desk] You seem a little stressed...

[Jake begins to turn Layla's roller chair around slowly with his foot, tilting his head to the side in amusement as she rotates around] You can take a break and hang out with me though, right?

“It’s archaeology stuff. Not the fun part, obviously. The paperwork and signing stuff.” She grumbled, a small pout pulling onto her lips, her head in her hands.

She let him turn her chair to face him, slowly. Raising a playful eyebrow at him. Her face exhausted. “I guess, if I have to.” She joked.

Fantastic! [Jake puts out two gloved hands excitedly, offering her tired form some help out of the chair]

The weather's been a little off but I can drive us somewhere instead. Ya hungry? I know a few good places with pancakes that should be open bout now.

“Pancakes sound great, actually. I’m fully starving.” She sighed, shrugging her own of Marc’s jackets on. “Where have you got in mind?”

There's this nice little diner open till two AM or something like that, [Jake takes Marc's keys and wallet out of his pockets, swapping them for his own]

I like to stop there after work if you know what I mean. I know the owners too- good people- I saved their kid from a mugging once so I eat free.

Layla spoke a soft ‘wow’, grabbing her own set of keys. “That’s cool. Doesn’t sound familiar, but free pancakes are a win.” She walked through the front door, waiting for him.

She laughed at that. “He’ll be fine. If he’s got a problem with it, he can take it up with me. I’m his wife, he can’t say no to me.”

Yeah I guess that's true! [Jake laughs to himself, removing his keys from his pocket and locking the front door] Marc can say no to me I guess, but I don't gotta listen.

[Jake begins walking out of the building towards his car, keeping shoulder to shoulder with Layla, shivering slightly from the light rain and cold] ...You know Marc loves you a lot, right? He would do almost anything for ya, I'm sure of it.

“Yeah, I hope he does. I know he does.” She gave a weak smile at the thought. “He’s just… got an odd way of showing it sometimes, right? But I love him.”

Yeah... [Jake opens the door for her, moving to the trunk and retrieving a blanket] He's always struggled with that sort of thing. He's scared... we both are.

[Jake offers her over the quilt before getting in the car himself and turning the key, changing the subject slightly] No point in you freezing to death on the drive over, right? [Jake pats the dashboard of the old taxi fondly] She is the most beautiful vehicle ever created, but the heating systems do need some work... I'll- I'll- get to that this weekend or something.

“I know.” Layla nodded, smiling gently at him handing her a blanket. She covered herself in it as she settled into the passenger seat.

She snickered. “I think I can survive a little cold. But the blanket’s certainly helping.” She teased. Shaking her head and grinning at his affection for the car. “Yeah, but the minute you try, Steven and Marc are gonna be loudly judging you the entire time on your methods.”

[Jake rolled his eyes at that, smiling whilst shifting the car into reverse and backing out of his parking spot] There's a reason I'm the mechanic out of us three and not them. Win and doubt, Marc will just throw duck tape on it and call it a day.

Steven... [Jake thinks for a moment] ...I think he could maybe build an IKEA cabinet. With help.

... Have you ever been into fixing stuff?

Layla laughed fondly. “He would definitely do that. I’m pretty sure I remember him doing that with our sink in our old apartment when it was leaking, I wouldn’t put it past him.”

“I mean, Steven’s out up his own bookshelves, so why not a cabinet?” She beamed at the thought. “But definitely not anything to do with cars.”

“Well, I was usually the one to fix broken shit in the apartment. My dad taught me, always wanted me to be independent. It’s not my favourite thing to do, though.”

Yeah, understandable. [Jake enters the roadway, feeling that guilt- Marc's guilt- rising whenever Mr. El Faouly was mentioned. He falls quite for a moment, hesitating to ask]

Layla hummed softly, her gaze finding him as she tugged the blanket around her a little tighter. "Oh, yeah." "Well, I actually never knew her. She died when she gave birth to me." She explained quietly. "That's probably why I talk so much about my dad instead."

[Oh- Jake didn't know that- and neither did the other two, as it seems. Jake can feel Layla looking at him, but is unable to meet her gaze, instead focusing on the road with a clear look of sadness]

Layla shrugged. "Taweret is Taweret. She's always talking about something. A little too excited, asking me questions all the time. But other than that she's good. I think I'm starting to get used to her chatter." She snickered softly.

How dangerous are your missions anyway? I know you've joined Marc on a few of his, but I guess I don't actually know the focus of your work.

She raised an eyebrow. “I wouldn’t describe him as a joy. Although he’s probably having a hissy fit hearing me say that.”

“I mean, I wouldn’t say they’re too dangerous. Taweret is a goddess of women and childbirth. If I’m not helping Marc, I’m helping women in dangerous situations and trouble and any other civilians along the way. It’s actually pretty cool.”

Layla laid in the bed of her and Marc's shared apartment, resting. She laid beneath the sheets, but the bed felt cold. Empty.

The boys were out on a mission. She'd tried to come, but Marc insisted she stay home.

Something about it being unsafe. She tried to protest, saying she was literally an avatar, but despite it usually working - this time it was to no avail.

And yet, she was more worried here home alone, unsure if they would return tonight or in a week.

She'd buried herself in papers, books, work.

Anything history and archaeology to take her mind off of it.

But after getting sick of staring at too many words, she laid in bed, the anxiety clawing at her stomach. It almost reminded her of when she didn't know where Marc was for so many months.

When she heard the front door to the apartment open an hour later, she shot up. Blurry eyes blinking away the sleep, hoping to see one of her boys, whoever was fronting. But she couldn't quite see who it was yet.
