So, I finally got around to seeing the new Karate Kid, and was really pleased to find out that it was the story all about how Jaden Smith’s life got flipped turned upside down. You see, he was chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool, shooting some b-ball outside of his school, when a couple of guys (who were up to no …good) started making trouble in his neighbourhood. He got in one little fight and his mom got scared! And said “You’re going to learn kung-fu from the maintenance man downstairs.

Me & The Bees aka Bee Sweet Lemonade

I keep seeing posts about Mikaila’s success, but literally no one has bothered to mention her name or the name of her company which pisses me off to no end. Stop erasing black girl, and call them by name. So here is actual information about her and her company.

Mikaila Ulmer got started selling Lemonade at the age of 4 when she found her grandmother’s old recipe books which included one for Flaxseed Lemonade from the 1940s, close to this time she was also stung by a bee. Mikaila explain that she then became fascinated with bees and learned all about what they do for her and our ecosystem. 

“I didn’t enjoy the bee stings at all. They scared me. But then something strange happened. I became fascinated with bees. I learned all about what they do for me and our ecosystem. So then I thought, what if I make something that helps honeybees and uses my Great-Granny Helen’s recipe?”

And well, Bee Sweet Lemonade (now called “Me and the Bees”) was born. Mikaila sells her lemonade wherever she can and takes great pride in donating a percentage of her sales to both local and global organizations that are fighting to help save the bees.

Mikaila  appeared on Shark Tank last year, and received a $60k investment from Daymond John. This year, Whole Foods heard about her product and she now has a contract with them that will place BeeSweet in 55 stores in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. If BeeSweet does well, it will be stocklisted in other stores across the U.S.

Mikaila was also awarded this year at SXSW as on of the top 10 black innovators of the year. When she accepted her award she annouced that they would be expanding distribution with UNFI (United Natural Foods), a leading national distributor of natural foods and beverages. She also commented about how she runs her business at a young age. She says said the operation takes organization, commitment and energy. “I work on the business after school, after I do my homework, and on weekends and during spring breaks. There are not too many times when I feel stressed.”
