Your skin is going to heal.
Your skin isn’t damaged.
You are not stupid.
It’s not your fault.
I know it’s hard to control.
Your picking spots don’t make you ugly.
Hey
please remove your hands from your skin. You are fine, your skin is fine. You don’t need to pick anything off. You don’t need to dig anything out. It’s okay. Breathe. It will heal. It will go away. Don’t let this illness control you. You control you. Okay?
me: hey you know if we had just left this scab alone instead of ripping it off every day it probably would have healed by now
my brain, revving up a chainsaw: Unfortunate ,,
friend: why are your hands all messed up?
me: oh i pick at my skin when i’m anxious
friend: well stop
me:
Wow, I’ve Never Thought of That Before
my sunburn: starts peeling and blistering
my dermatillomania:
@ my blood: it is strongly advised that you remain inside my facial areas
A couple things I’ve learned
just for some babes who may find them useful
1) This shit
Self-adhesive medical tape is one of my new favorite things. I wrap it around the tips of my fingers like a thimble type deal. It doesn’t stick to your skin but stays on your fingers; you can type with it on, and it’s imfuckingpossible to pick while wearing it. You can get a buttload for $12 on amazon here.
2) These fuckers
Look dumb? Heck yeah they do. I use them for mirrors, ‘cause we all know how tricky those are. They occupy both your hands, you can twist them into shapes like the 5-year-old you are, and if both your hands are playing with it, they aren’t skimming your face. You can buy three for $10 here.
3) Whatever the fuck these are
don’t even know what to call them tbh; my therapist gave them to me and I use them while at the computer. You roll them around on your fingers and the spikes sting ever so slightly so be careful if you regularly pick your fingers, but the sensation replaces the sensation you might expect from picking and keeps you aware of your hands so they don’t stray to your skin like the sneaky fuckers they are. You can get a pack of ten for $10 here.
I’ll update with more later on, but these are the main ones I’ve had real success with. The trick is to use them consistently around your typical trigger areas or situations where you pick the most often, so your brain learns to associate those things with the fidget and not with picking. As always, if anyone else has tricks or fidgets that really work for them, don’t hesitate for a nanosecond to add on. Happy healing, you gorgeous little shits you!
UPDATE:
Some boss ass bitches have offered some other fidget ideas/picking alternatives after seeing this post so here’s that update I’ve been saying I’d add since like last May lmao
4) Textreme Squishy Grips
Available for $0.25 here (along with some other baller fidgets). Squish squish motherfucker.
5) Pom Balls
Seven year old me just shat herself. Pull them, squeeze them, bounce them, whatever you want. Especially good for trichy babes since they replicate the sensation of pulling. Available for $5.00 here or probably on Amazon if you search “pom ball” or the like.
6) Buzzing Stunt Magnets????? Apparently??????
Someone commented a link to them below the original post so if it helps at all I’m here for it as fuck. Had no idea that was what those things were called. Learning all types of shit today.
7) Picking/Peeling Fruit/Anything With Seeds
One babe said peeling oranges was helpful, another suggested picking the seeds out of a pickle spear, the list goes on. I’m especially here for the orange idea because then you’ve got a healthy ass orange to eat after peeling it. *Throws Vitamin C at you* Shine, bitch!!
7) Acrylic Nails
This one a lot of y’all know well. Acrylic tips dull the sensation in your fingers especially when you’re skimming your skin and can make it harder to pick. Not gonna lie, the first time I got acrylics I had to relearn how to type. Also pretty as fuck like wow mama work it. HOWEVER: If, like myself, you are a certified Broke Ass Bitch, I would recommend cutting your nails all the way down as often as possible. This was a huge help to me because even if I picked I couldn’t do that much damage.
Finally, a protip: A couple beauties have alerted me to the fact that Self-Adhesive Medical Tape is also called Vet Wrap! And is apparently much cheaper if you search that instead of Medical Tape!!!
Keep adding on with tips and tricks that help; what works for you could easily work for someone else. Keep on grinding, and don’t ever let your disorders tell you SHIT <3
me while peeling the dry skin and scab off my knee like orange peel with my blood covered hands: damn, why the wound on my knee is taking so long to heal :/
some things that help me avoid picking:
putting a non-comedogenic oil or thick moisturizer on so your fingers literally slip off if you try
wearing gloves so even if you touch your skin, you can’t feel texture as much and can’t really squeeze
using a face mask that can be left on for a long time, cause they help your skin and hide bumps/redness/spots AND remind you not to touch
similar, but try those little stickers that you put on spots, cause they stay on super well, help encourage healing if there’s actually a spot there, and make it harder to pick
set a timer when you’re going to the bathroom/going to be near a mirror, so that it can go off and interrupt you if you start to pick
put post-it notes on your mirrors reminding you not to pick
reward yourself or just celebrate every time you don’t pick or pick less
if you’re competitive, try keeping a tally of how long you can go without picking and keep trying to beat your record
get rid of any magnifying mirrors you have
same for any blackhead extractors or tools you use to pick, even if that includes tweezers or things with other purposes
credit to my psychologist for this one: remind yourself that picking may or (more likely) may not help the spot, but it will DEFINITELY feed your dermatillomania
don’t be afraid to reassess techniques if they stop helping you! sometimes taking pictures of my skin helps remind me that picking makes my skin worse and keeps me accountable, sometimes it just makes me obsess more over my skin
not my quote, but someone wrote that if you stumble going down a flight of stairs you don’t give up and throw yourself down the rest of the way, you stop yourself, regain balance, and keep going. same thing applies with picking; if you do pick, don’t tell yourself “fuck it, might as well keep going since i already messed up”

Here’s to all the people
With scars from their skin condition
Who have ever been told not to wear shorts or T-shirts because they should ‘cover it up’
Who feel like their body is gross or ugly
Who have been pointed at and called disgusting
Who always wear long clothes to cover up
Who get people without a skin condition telling them how to manage it
Who have 6843 different creams and lotions and have lost track of which ones they’re supposed to be using right now.
You’re all beautiful, you’re all fantastic and you’re all doing a great job
BFRBs are so much fun i love that my mental illness is visible right on my SKIN especially my fACE THATS JUST THE BEST
i washed my face yesterday why am i still mentally ill
that derma feel when u clip ur nails short so you’ll stop picking but now u can’t scratch anything and yet u can still pick and it makes u want to commit murder
