GREEN LANTERN VS STARRO -- 11x17 commission in advance of Baltimore Comic Con this weekend.
An utterly inadequate recreation of Will Eisner’s title page for THE DEATH OF AUTUMN MEWES. Practice, practice.
THE MAN IN THE BLACK MASK (the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, Proto-Daredevil, or Matt Murdock’s angry friend with the awesome voice, whatever you like to call him) -- 11x14 piece from Rose City Comic Con this past weekend.
An extended warmup I got sucked into today; M from SAN HANNIBAL + this one A Softer World strip that always pricked my heart a little. Assembled by hand in, ah, call it ninety minutes.
Just some practice. I really like drawing M, and hope I get to do something with her sooner rather than later.
Mister Carrion and Julia concept sketch for WILL EISNER’S THE SPIRIT #2. Some later interpretations of Carrion give him a more avian appearance, but I feel like he works best as he was originally drawn -- a slick, oily hustler who happens to be in a long term committed relationship with a really big bird.
Panel to panel, I thought of a ratty version of Robert Walker in Strangers on a Train.
Inks for WILL EISNER’S THE SPIRIT #1, page 6. Scripted by Matt Wagner.
My character designs for Dynamite’s upcoming WILL EISNER’S THE SPIRIT. Colors provided by series colorist Brennan Wagner. I really think he picked the perfect hue for the Spirit’s suit; it’s got the substance of the Darwyn Cooke/Dave Stewart navy suit, but retains the vibrancy of the original. And the red of the tie... throughout the whole of our series, that red slices through every other color. Spirit’s the closest thing Central City has to a superhero, and that tie is his Superman cape.
Matt Wagner, who art directs the series as well as writes it, had a huge hand in these -- especially Ellen, Ebony, and Sammy. Boy, Sammy. Who’d have thought he’d be the toughest nut to crack?
(The only one who was relatively easy was Commissioner Dolan, who, as a suited, hawk-nosed white man with a prominent chin, was pretty squarely in my wheelhouse.)
I threw a little extra commentary on the images themselves. Enjoy!
JUBILEE + DAREDEVIL on an A+X sketchcover.
A spunky vampire with firework powers and a vigilante dressed like Satan. I think this team-up makes complete sense, but that could just be me.
CLASSIC ROGUE on an X-Men Legacy sketch cover.
I love her crazy, simple, comfortable-looking, crazy again original costume. Big ups to Paul Smith, who drew the best classic Rogue.
MARGO LANE -- and her weirdo serial killer boyfriend.

That Guy Who’s Been Living in Lamont Cranston’s House Lately: lines by me, colors and etc by brennanwagner.
(Based off the original cover for Shiwan Khan Returns. I’d post it here, but I try to keep the words “oriental menace” off my social media if I can absolutely help it. Wait — Shit.)
Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT -- one-upping crime from six feet under.

Jessica Jones and Sue Storm -- 22x17 commission for dirtyriver's excellent art series of famous private eyes and Hitchcockian blondes in trouble. I was honored to be able to make this humble contribution.

Moon Knight on the Iron Throne by danschkade Dan Schkade.
This client has a fun theme (well, not for Tony) of having Marvel Heroes and Villains on a “Iron Throne”, but instead of a throne of swords like in Game of Thrones, it’s made up of Iron Man armor parts.
Love that this piece is placed in the temple of Konshu, with the classic Moon Knight.
Commissions available.
