Azriel wasn’t fully aware why he was here. But here he was stalking, no, observing the local seamstress. He had been watching her for over two, almost three, weeks at this point. He couldn’t figure out how to approach her. What was he supposed to say?
Hi, I’m Azriel, and you're my mate. What’s your name?
Yeah, cause that worked out so well for Lucian. Although Elain had recently decided to give the mating bond and Lucian a chance, so maybe not a terrible idea. But he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.
And that is why he was here watching as she was out to dinner with friends after she closed her shop for the day. It was late, and she stayed well past closing hours to work on an order before joining her friends at the cafe near the Sidra.
Now he gets the pleasure of watching her walk home alone in the dark streets of Velaris well after midnight. Her friends had said they would walk her home, but she insisted that she would be just fine and that she didn’t want to inconvenience her friends.
Oh my mate, always so considerate of others, even when it's a stupid idea.
This is why he has to watch her, to make sure nothing happens, like someone abducting her
Wait, what if I just- No, that would definitely not be a great way to start a mating bond.
So, here he is in the shadows watching her curvy figure in that bright blue dress that accentuates her curves in a way that makes his mouth water.
Then he sees him, some drunk male coming out of the opposite alley, stumbling towards his mate with a threatening demeanor.
“Hey there, pretty, you shouldn’t walk home alone. Want to come home with me?” The drunk man slurred.
“Oh no, thank you, I’m okay,” she kept moving, hoping her would just leave her be.
“Oh come on, we could have a real good time together.”
“I’m okay, but thank you,” She said, trying to continue on her way, her voice shaking, clearly uncomfortable.
He grabbed her arm. “Oh, don’t be rude, I just want to get to know you, we could be friends, I’m really friendly.”
“I have enough friends, thank you.” She said, trying to remove her arm from his grasp, but he held her tighter. “Hey, let go of me.”
“Relax-”
“The lady asked you to let go.” Azriel grabbed the male’s arm, squeezing until the drunk male let go of his mate's arm.
“Oh man, we were just talking,” the male slurred, pulling his arm from Azriel’s grasp.
“No, you weren’t, and I suggest you leave now,” Azriel said sternly.
“Fine, whatever,” the male said before turning to look at the female. “You’re fat anyway.” He said before turning away.
Something in Azriels snapped; it happened so fast, and the next thing he knew, the male was on the ground, and that familiar sting radiated from Azriels’s knuckles. The man lay there motionless.
“Are you okay?” Azriel asked his mate, his voice quieter now, trying to appear less threatening.
“Yeah, I’m okay,” She cradled her arm to her chest, a red mark forming on her wrist where the male had grabbed her.
“Here, let me see.” Azriel took a step toward her, extending his hand to examine her arm. She let him gingerly grasp her arm to examine her. She was so short compared to him. He towered over her, as she barely came up to his chest.
“You’re bleeding.” She said, grabbing his hand. Azriel felt a tingle radiate from where she touched him.
“It’s nothing, must have caught it on his tooth when I punched him,” Azriel attempted to dismiss her concern. “Perhaps I should walk you home, to make sure nothing else happens tonight.”
“That would probably be a good idea,” she said, giving him a kind smile. “My name is Aurora, but my friends call me Rory.” Azriel already knew her name, obviously, but she didn’t need to know that.
“Azriel, it’s nice to meet you.”
“Azriel, your name sounds so familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?” Rory had said his name, and it sounded beautiful coming from her lips. “Oh, you work with the High Lord, right?”
So she does know about me.
“Right,” Azriel said flatly. They soon arrive in front of her shop.
“Well, this is me, um, do you want to come inside? I’m not a healer, but I do have a first aid kit. We could clean and bandage your hand.”
“Yeah, thank you.”
Azriel watched as she unlocked the door to her shop. Once it opened, he followed her in. She went and pulled out a box from under the counter. She pulled out a bottle with some kind of healing tonic and gauze.
“Can I have your hand?” She held out her own. Azriel placed his large hand in her much smaller one. She lightly dabbed at his knuckles, cleaning the wound. Azriel felt the bond hum in his chest. He had never been this close to her. Her scent was intoxicating; she smelt of bergamot, figs, pomegranate, and a hint of patchouli. Her skin was soft, so soft it made him wonder what it would feel like caressing his face, chest, and other parts of his body.
“Thank you for what you did back there. I really appreciate it,” she smiles up at him. “You’re like my hero. How can I repay you?”
“Y-you don’t need to.” Azriel stumbled over his words, and she took him out of his trance.
“But I want to,” She pursed her lips as she tried to think of ways to thank him. “Oh, I could make you some new clothes!” Her smile returned to her face, and she looked him up and down.
“What’s wrong with the clothes I’m wearing now?” Azriel teases.
“Nothing!” She rushed out, a blush creeping up her neck.”You could come by tomorrow, and I can measure you, and we can go over designs, if that works for you?”
“Tomorrow works,” Rory had finished treating his cuts a while ago, and only now did Azriel realize he had been holding her hand the entire conversation.
“Okay, I-I’ll see you then.”
“I will see you tomorrow. Have a good night, Rory.”
He gently let go of her hand before moving toward the door. He looked back one more time before exiting her shop. He decided to walk the few blocks back to where he had left the drunk male lying on the street. He was happy to see him still lying there unconscious. He collected the unconscious male from the street, as Azriel had some other plans for the male tonight.
