So,

One of my staunchest literary champions over the years has been my teacher David Leach. Dude’s written me countless reference letters, recommended me for a journalism scholarship at UVic and he read a bunch of my first shots at feature-writing and CNF. 

I learned a lot from him. 

When I was a student at UVic Leach’d just published Fatal Tide, a book about a kayaking accident on the East Coast. He told us he was working on a memoir about his kibbutz days, and at the time he wasn’t sure when or how he was going to publish it.

Well, I’m happy to announce we’ve got books coming out around the same time! His new book from ECW is called Love & Rockets: Chasing Utopia in a Divided Israel and it’s coming out in Fall 2016, right around the same time as This is how you talk to strangers. 

The best part of the coming interview, by the way, is the retro photos Dave sent me from those days. Here’s his description of himself: 

“Yeah, I was a high-school metalhead and had a serious mullet that was trimmed with a Swiss Army knife scissors while living in Israel. I was the quintessential Ugly Canadian, especially when I was hitch-hiking in my Labatt’s Blue cap, too.  Believe it or not, there are even more embarrassing pics from my kibbutz days floating around….”
