Top 1 manga pannels that fucking haunt me

I have talked about UBCS and HUNK before, and after mentioning Jake and his mom, as well, I'm afraid it's time to take my family khanjar again and point it at the board.

While Edonia is called 'Eastern Europe' it's a mish-mash of architecture and visuals that represent both the European and Asian sides of post USSR climate. Jake, much like yours truly, had a bad luck of being born during several civil wars, an energy crisis, multiple on-going ethnic cleansings on multiple borders, and child kidnappings, because god hates us.

I guess this can be considered a bit of a trauma dump, since it is personal (?) But I primarily want to explain what time and place RE's world is representing when they talk about the mercs Umbrella hired in the 90s to be used as cannon fodder, and what Jake's life was like. (Also, I promise I'm fine)

Before I go to depress you further, there will be images - nothing graphic but just people struggling and some military dickheads.

So, 90s for us in West and Central Asia were pretty fucking wild. We had no electricity, water, or heating a lot of the time. In fact, when I was in school, for most of my life, I would see electricity for a couple of hours in the evening and not every evening. I remember I was prepping for uni when we consistently had electricity. And I was one of the lucky ones who did. There are still people living in less populated areas that don't have access to water and electricity daily.

These are from Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia; there were lines for everything. Bread, meat, gasoline - anything you needed to survive. And there was never enough for everyone. Especially not meat. In fact, sometimes people would bid on meat, by themselves or team up with someone and split it, pulling money together. Which is what is happening in the first image. Transport was overcrowded as fuck and even if you had a car, chances were you couldn't afford to fill it or get it serviced. Also, a bunch of dudes could just take it from you and no one would do anything about it. Happened to my dad, actually. But then those guys got shot in our car, so, WHOSE LAUGHING NOW. Well, not us, cause the cops didn't let us have the car back.

Water, you often had to get from outside, especially if you lived outside of a few big cities. That was my first big boy job and I was very proud of carrying my little metal kettle. :)

The metal monstrosities that were these heaters, killed many, many people, because they were shoddily made, often by locals who had no training, and leaving them overnight was considered extremely dangerous. They smelled awful, just to be extra assholish. I think everyone I had ever met had one of these at one points, nothing else really existed as an alternative for a while and due to aforementioned civil wars, hey, plenty of random metal lying about.

A lot of these dudes were volunteer fighters or mercs. People just kinda became mercs cause they had no other choice. Many even volunteered just for food security. Kids were kidnapped, both as soldiers and as brides. We weren't allowed to play out of sight of a designated adult watching us at all times when we were outside of home or school.

If you want to write characters from these areas and that era, as someone that lived through it, I 1000% encourage you to. You can ask me, you can look things up yourself and educate yourself. Funny enough, RE does a fairly good job at portraying vastly different mindsets of people who come from there backgrounds. Some of them are totally broken down by it, while others have become predatory in order to survive. I can honestly say I have met all of them, at some point.

the story so far.

scottie (born scarlett) was born as the second child to nina nolan, a stripper in orlando who could barely hold down a job for anything longer than four months.

with her mother and her older brother, atlas, scottie grew up in 'pay by the night' motel rooms. often it was just her and her brother fending for themselves while their mother worked and partied through nights and slept through the days. that's when times were good.

when times were bad nina would disappear for days at a time, either with a new boyfriend or whatever substance she was currently indulging in. those would be the times they'd get kicked out of motels for falling behind on payments.

eventually the luck ran out and child services collected scottie and her brother when she was ten years old. separated by the system, they agreed to meet up in california when they turned eighteen after scottie having an obsession with hollywood all her life.

scottie bounced through the foster care system, some places good and some places bad -- some stays long and some stays short. a bad altercation with a man in her last placement led to her breaking a bottle over his head in self-defense -- an assault charge that led her to spend her last two years in the system in a group home.

after spending their time in several cities along the coast and a span of three years in las vegas working as a stripper, she currently rents a house in fisher's cove with her brother. they haven't heard from nina since they were kids. they enjoy throwing rowdy parties and are no strangers to noise complaints.

scottie fell easily into working as a cocktail waitress -- an adaptable job that puts her natural flirtation skills and attitude to work and results in good tips and happy regulars. she runs an onlyfans account on the side with a solid base built up of fans from her stripper days.

over the last year, scottie has been dabbling in a fledgling 'onlyfans' account -- she'd always dreamed of being famous, and getting the account off the ground is one step closer to that.

fun facts.

scottie grew up in Orlando and has an aversion to Disney World in spite of never stepping foot in the place before. (Her family couldn't afford to and she was painfully jealous being constantly surrounded by people who could.)

scottie drives a red 1998 Chevy Silverado pickup truck that she bought with her savings after turning 18. At the time it didn't run, but she and her brother spent hours watching Youtube tutorials and scavenging junkyards until they got all the right pieces to fix it up.

A third generation Peruvian immigrant, Joaquin Vidal has never known any home but London. Born and raised in Poplar (a notoriously impoverished area of the city) life was always going to be a struggle for his family - for stability, for money, for respect - but struggle they did. Joaquin’s grandparents went about things the old fashioned way, sacrificing every last shred of their dignity to scrape together enough money to take over the lease on the local newsagent after the previous owner passed away. They managed it, just barely, but even at the tail-end of the sixties, Poplar wasn’t the most tolerant of places, and the shopfront was regularly graffitied or worse.

By the time Joaquin was born, the Vidals had come to realise that London’s streets weren’t paved with gold, as they had hoped they would be when they arrived in England. They had their shop, true, but it wasn’t enough - the family was still living on top of each other, three generations packed into two rooms, living hand-to-mouth. His mother, Alejandra, was only sixteen when she discovered she was expecting, and a wedding was quickly organised in a desperate attempt to hang on to the precious little respectability the Vidals had garnered within their community. It was only two years before Joaquin's father vanished into the night, never to be seen again.

Joaquin was still young when he started looking for trouble (or when trouble started looking for him, as he’d always insist). He was a handsome, charismatic teenager, with a swagger in his step and an appetite for violence that only comes from feeling like you’ve got something to prove. It seemed as if he was destined for gang life from the get go, smoothly transitioning from playground bust-ups and brawling in the streets to the well-paid world of underground fighting. Joaquin was a workhorse in the ring, a surprisingly lithe figure that categorically refused to stay down, and it made him a hugely valuable commodity as a prize fighter. He would do whatever it took to win, and then some.

It was around this time that he set his sights on a woman known to the Jolly Rogers as Sweeney Todd. The former Crooked Hand, a man by the name of Alistair Winchester, had heard of Joaquin’s success on the underground fighting circuit, and was actively trying to recruit him to his cause. Sweeney was Alistair’s niece, and had been embroiled in the workings of the gang since she was very young, meaning she was already well established as a career assassin. Joaquin was drawn to her immediately - he knew they were made for each other.

As his relationship with Sweeney developed, Joaquin became as assimilated into the Jolly Roger lifestyle as she was, working his way up from pit fighter to contract killer in a matter of years. He would always prefer working with his hands (or, rather, his fists), but he learnt to wield a gun with precision and deadly force. As a rule, Joaquin and Sweeney were not supposed to work contracts together - they were both experts in their craft, but their dynamic was volatile and unpredictable, entirely inexplicable to anyone but themselves. People used to say that one day they’d either kill each other, or end up married - they chose the latter.

Realistically, it was never going to last between them - in fact, it’s some kind of miracle (or maybe a curse) that their marriage survived the eleven years it did. After one, final, explosive argument, the Vidals separated for good, but angry as they were, they couldn’t stay away from each other for long. Joaquin started taking contracts abroad, furthering his reputation with the Rogers while doing his best to forget about Sweeney. But he couldn’t, he couldn’t move on from her. He’s never been good at letting go.

When Alistair Winchester shit the bed and got himself nicked, it was only a matter of time before someone was called in to clean up his mess. Following the customary vote between senior members of the gang, Joaquin was compelled to return from his work overseas, not so much stepping into Alistair's shoes as kicking them out of his way. He never sought the title of the Crooked Hand, and his election came as a surprise, but who is he to spit in the face of democracy? If the Jolly Rogers wanted a show of force, Joaquin Vidal would be the one to give it to them.

He's been the head honcho for coming up on four years now, driving the Jolly Rogers into an era of prosperity that puts old man Winchester's legacy to shame. The treaty is starting to chafe at him, though, his patience for niceties running dangerously thin. No, he thinks its high time his people start making some more aggressive plays - show the Jabberwocks and everyone else who really runs the streets of London.

Before he was the Crooked Hand, Joaquin was known as Sykes, after the character from Oliver Twist. Not the most flattering of code names, but he’s never been much of a reader, and didn’t understand the connotations until much later on. 

Joaquin calls in on his mother approximately once every six months. They didn’t have the best of relationships after she remarried and started a new better family, but she’s old now, and the only surviving relative he’s still in touch with.

He's not usually much of a gambler, but he goes out of his way to attend the Royal Ascot every year, delighting both in betting on the horse races and terrorising the unfortunate toffs forced to share space with him for the duration of the event.

He’s a passionate West Ham supporter, and will thank you not to remind him how poorly they’ve been performing in the premiere league.

To date, Joaquin has never seen a cow in real life.

There isn’t a single event that could convince Joaquin to wear a tie. He didn’t even wear one to his wedding.

Evidence:

He's made multiple comments about raising himself. Wilbur seems to have been the one who looked after him the most ("Will you still look after me when I'm alone?" "I named... Tommy," etc.);

He consistently rejects nice housing: choosing to sleep in a tent in Logstedshire instead of the nice place Ghostbur built for him, sleeping in a dirty hole even after Techno found him under his house, inviting Tubbo to move in with him in his dirt hut instead of both of them living in Snowchester, etc., as if living in an actual, nice house is an alien/uncomfortable concept to him;

In general likes using poor materials (like cobblestone) for building;

He prefers thievery and scamming over getting things legitimately, maybe cause the former way was easier and more reliable/safer growing up;

Perhaps he clings to sentimental items because he had so little growing up as is, which is why his ender chest is filled with those special items instead of actually useful stuff;

Items that are not sentimental he uses up flippantly cause on the streets he had to use whatever he had to survive;

He canonically knows how to sew and patch up his own clothes, which would be necessary if new clothes are hard to come by;

If we want to go full lore mode, Wilbur building L'manburg to escape those conditions and find Tommy an actual home.

So, remember the drawings I did of Giorno and Bruno’s Linkers; Lucille and Leon?

Well, I’m planning on drawing the rest of Team Bucciarati’s Linkers!

They go as follows:

Lucille Aragosta, a rich Italian girl who loves playing the piano and shopping. Her favorite color is gold, of all choices. And she loves to donate whatever old toys she has to charities.

Leon Hawthorne, a biracial Italian American boy whose mom is of American origin (And where he got his dark skin from) and dad is of Italian origin. He runs a beautiful restaurant by the ocean with his family.

Yolanda Khatun, a Bangladeshi girl whose grandparents moved to Italy. Her father is a pilot, and she adores traveling, often asking her dad where he’s been after travels.

Miley Vandestine, an Italian girl who loves running her family gelato store (Hazelnut is her fave!). As much as she loves working with desserts, she loves sharing them with her friends even more.

Brendon Hill, an aspiring cyclist who longs to participate in professional bike races. He will do anything to upgrade his bike and make it look professional, but for now he decides to do street racing.

Rani Bianchi, a non binary kid who loves the rain and all the new life it brings. They often carry their umbrella with them wherever they travel- whether it be rain or shine.

And Sombra Bandera, who has lived almost her entire life in poverty on the streets, with only her older brother Ignacio to trust. She is stone cold and rarely ever smiles; but when she does- you’re in for a treat.

→ Past 

Robin Hood was born as Robert Huntington to an impoverished family with a small plot of land. It was all that had survived through years of selfish royals and scraping to get by. There was not much to tend to and it bore little food, so their primary way of living was through the pottery his parents sold. Then they died and left him to fend for himself. Prince John took the land, claiming it was for the king, tossing Robert to the cold. He bounced around, staying in abandoned sheds and sneaking into people’s barns before they chased him away. While on the verge of starvation, he stole his first bit of bread. That was when his problems with the law began. He stole from the rich to give to himself; whenever he was caught, he gave the name of “Robin Hood” a common alias for thieves in the area. Soon, it became his name and he forgot who he used to be. As Robin got older, he amassed a group of followers and they lived in the forest, homeless but together. It was the first time Robin felt any sort of affection from anyone. No one had looked out for him since his parents died, but at least he had the Merrymen. After they got a handle on thieving, they began to turn to more altruistic pursuits and started to distribute their riches to the people. It was during one of those trips into town that he met Maid Marian and began to fawn over the unattainable woman. He never expected her to love him back, but she did. It didn’t matter that she was Prince John’s ward or anything else for that matter; he was determined to marry her someday. So, after one final trick on the Prince, she ran off with him into Sherwood Forest. 

→ Present 

After King Richard returned and struck a deal with Robin, he was pardoned and Robin was allowed to marry the woman he loved. They were happy living in a small cottage within the forest, enjoying a simple life away from royalty. He stopped stealing and continued his old family trade. Marian usually came with him into town to sell his pots, but that day she was feeling a bit under the weather. So, she stayed home. Robin returned to find the cottage in flames and the Merrymen attempting to douse the fire. It was in vain. Marian did not make it and Robin was homeless once more. He knew Prince John had caused the fire, but King Richard refused to execute a royal, no matter the crime and especially without evidence. Realizing the king was just as bad as the prince, Robin took to stealing again, this time in no one’s name but his own. After word of his antics spread, Robin was recruited by the rebellion. He agreed to join them, though he felt little more than numb. Still, doing good deeds helped distract him. Maybe he didn’t need anything aside from his Merrymen. At least, that was what he told himself before he met them. They make the darkness go away and he can't let that go.
