Sunrise light illuminates clouds above crashing ocean waves near Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii. The Hawaiian islands of Lanai (left) and Molokai (right) are visible on the horizon in this picture. The mix of high, midlevel and low clouds combined with the long exposure water motion made for a very interesting and dynamic composition. After capturing a few photos of this scene, I told myself to "Slow Down" and enjoy this relaxing tropical sunrise. I'm glad I did, since the light and clouds in this composition are some of the most fascinating I've seen in Hawaii. ©2020 by Scott Smorra

“Winter Tranquility” (2016) Sunrise alpenglow illuminating Mt Hood and a thready altocumulus lenticularis (lenticular) cloud on a cold winter morning. Watching the lenticular cloud dancing over mountain made for a very enjoyable morning! I hope when you view this photo you feel some of the peaceful calm I experienced out there that morning. It was wonderful!

“Waiting and Wondering” (2012) A beautiful Caribbean sunrise at a secluded beach in Tulum, Mexico. The colors in the water and sky on that morning were pretty amazing. Tulum is one of my favorite areas in the Riviera Maya of Mexico. White sand beaches lined with coconut trees and very few people make it the perfect place for relaxation. The 80 degree water during the winter months is also a big attraction for people traveling from colder climates. Tulum is a great place for landscape photography with the colorful Caribbean water and vibrant sunrises.

Recovery | Mt St Helens, Washington Cascades

Fine Art Limited Edition of 100 - Sunrise alpenglow and peak summer wildflowers at Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Washington. On May 18th, 1980, Mt St Helens erupted violently and shot ash 80,000 feet into the air and flattened 230 square miles of forest. Today this area is undergoing a remarkable recovery. The wildflowers are now blooming every summer and small trees are taking root once again. All of the plants in this image are natural, since no replanting has occurred inside the National Volcanic Monument. Experts believe that in 200-500 years, in the absence of another massive eruption, the area will return to the pre-1980 old growth forest. I doubt this view of the mountain will exist in a couple hundred years, since the new forest would likely block the view of the mountain. When thinking about it in those terms, I figure this image is somewhat unique! ©2013 by Scott Smorra
