mus_smile and haunted houses and Noelle's house
hi everyone! i started this post back in 2025 but I realised I could probably finish it now. I'm gonna talk about mus_smile and how Noelle's house is basically a haunted house.
what is mus_smile?
mus_smile is a hidden track found in both Undertale and Deltarune. in Undertale, it's the sound of room_gaster, aka Entry Number Seventeen.
in Deltarune, it's used in three places.
(1) as snd_smile, the sound that plays when you use Kris's cell phone in the Dark World.
[Chapter 1] (You tried to call on the Cell Phone.) But it doesn't seem to be working.
[Chapter 2 onwards] (You tried to call on the Cell Phone.) It's nothing but garbage noise.
(2) at 1/6.66 speed as you approach the Shelter.
(3) at 1/6.66 speed in the Holiday Mansion basement, before the breaker's pulled.
what can we tell about mus_smile?
we know that mus_smile is an electrical sound; it comes from phones, it stops when there's no power in Noelle's house.
that it's associated with W.D. Gaster; it plays in room_gaster, it's at 1/6.66 speed near the Shelter and in Noelle's basement.
that it supercedes UTDR's cosmology: as in, it can be heard in both universes, and in both the Light World and the Dark World.
that it had come through Spamton's phone; "When I put the receiver to my ear... There was nothing but garbage noise."
haunted houses
okay, so, i think we can analyse Noelle's House as being a sort of haunted house.
Noelle's house is somewhere between a dollhouse and an elaborate theatre set. it's layout is choreographed so every door and every character will be facing us. it's improbably pristine; there's no signs that anyone's living there.
Noelle goes home from school every day, gets rid of Berdly, and sits alone in her room. she finds secrets in video games and writes fantasies on her blog.
in Chapter 5's Weird Route, Noelle describes herself disassociate, seeing her life the way we see her house.
Since Dess left... All I've been doing has just been... Marching down my path.
Staying quiet. Getting good grades. It feels like... I've just been watching myself through glass. Watching someone else move me through my life.
her house is haunted by Dess. Noelle doesn't find comfort there, she involuntarily inhabits it, "marching down her path", wishing she could run away. Dess's room, kept in eternal stasis, is a sort of grave, a dead weight that can't be moved on from. in the Weird Route, when Noelle can't sleep, she has to go outside.
in the Ice Palace, a sort of surreal depiction of Noelle's house, is soundtracked by GLACEIR, which to me, is a genuinely unnerving song. it constantly marches forwards, going somewhere but never reaching it, echoes forming a maze within it's trance-like-rhythm...
from what Noelle's computer tells us, she spends most of her time at home chasing ghosts.
There's this, um, awesome bug that lets you get... glitchy pets. I have a save file with like, seven headless cats. Faha.
(OK, Favorites... paranormal, crime, paranatural...)
Noelle's house then feels overshadowed by these ghosts - I've discussed in another post about her potential role in creating IMAGE_FRIEND. it makes sense mus_smile is playing because she basically did everything she could to invite it in.
a haunted house is basically a place where the unfamiliar and the familiar can meet. a house is domestic, normal. a haunted house is a transgression against that, letting the spirit world in.
Noelle's house is probably going to be a Dark World
at the start of Chapter 5, Susie tells us she's planning to get into Noelle's house again.
If things go well today, we might have another shot at getting... Into Noelle's house, right?
at the end of Chapter 5, Susie tells us she wants Noelle to be part of their team.
We can't mess up anymore. We have to tell someone. Someone closer to the Shelter codes. Someone who can help us fight. Kris, this can't just be a me and you thing. It needs to be... Noelle's thing, too.
with this all set-up, I think it's pretty likely that we'll be going to Noelle's house again at some point.
Flowery warns us about the approaching darkness underneath Hometown. Noelle's house is a place where this darkness is present, where it's basically been invited in.
Something horrible is stirring underneath the town. A darkness beyond your imagination. Susie... Kris... The road ahead of you is draped in shadow...
Chapter 6 will be the RUINS.
Metaphorically speaking.
One of the old Deltarune theories, of course, pre-CH3/4 even, is reverse Undertale Theory. Everyone knows it.
It held up pretty well (seemingly) until chapter 5, when everyone just started scratching their heads and going "Um... Snowdin chapter 6", for some reason. Because I guess they didn't trust the process and thought literal cold was the important part?
Chapter 5 reflects Snowdin pretty well, actually. Wide open ares. cliffs, an emphasis on nature rather than civilization. Until the end, a wacky cast of mostly harmless antagonists that pester you every step of the way fills the chapter, and at the end, you can just go to the diner and hang out with all of them.
Each and every one acts in service to King Asgore- a part of his royal guard.
The main villain(?) is an annoying teleporting guy who doesn't give up and will never actually try to kill you- a lab-cooked, maximally annoying combination of Sans, Papyrus, and Rudy.
At the end, we go through a purple archway.
This isn't the archway you exit the RUINS through, with its straight arch, ionic columns tops, and small DELTA RUNE.
Instead, it's the very same one you see when you enter Snowdin, with its three arches, unusual DELTA RUNE with three inline triangles, and doric column tops.
Now, like @most-obscure-deltarune raises in their fantastic post? the Holiday house is haunted.
The ice palace hints suggest that it'll be mazelike. Difficult, maybe impossible to navigate without the help of a resident, someone who lives there.
The Holidays' house, and the RUINS? Both are places that used to be called home, before being lost to time and tragedy.
Inhabited by a mother frozen by grief, who the other monsters, really, are just intimidated by.
I do think it's likely we'll see some vestiges of home in the chapter...
...But, ultimately, to get through the chapter, we may have to break through the veneer by going downstairs.
After all, there is a breaker down there.
And, as we've seen in Chapter 4- cutting off the lights in a Dark World alters the structure and layout of the rooms.
It might just be our ticket to get into places Carol is hiding.
Keeping your head above water
this one's a little less notable to me since a lot of characters share "stock" expressions (smiling, winking, ect.) but it still stands that these two share a lot of facesprite expressions as well.
i just hope they're all happy in the end
so polite
i really like this image she's so awesome and smiling
so cool
really awesome
so nice you'll see her thrice
The Three Faces of Kris
So after playing through Deltarune more than once and making Kris my little blorbo meow meow who does nothing wrong until they do I think I need to settle down my read of their character. That is to say, the three Kris's they have any how they interact with the world and the narration.
"Kris" The one who most often fronts in the Light World. The most emotionally detached at the moment and the one most messed up by The Incident. Will hurt themselves to force themselves to the front, and is the one who acts when their SOUL is removed and locked away. Gives the narration in parenthesis. Analytical and Chara-like, they're trying to accomplish their goal even as they get more and more attached to Susie and Ralsei. Stuck in transition and don't quite know what they want to be, well except they think they're likely going to be dead soon so they don't think much about their identity
Kris The Kris of the Dark World. The young knight who fights as a Hero. Perhaps the most outwardly expressive of them. They're the one who are pulling off all the crazy ACTs. They are loving their coming of age Dark World Adventures and doing their best to have fun. Is the tsundere one. Making fun of Ralsei and Berdly on one hand and then wanting to date both of them with the other. Gives the narration not in parenthesis.
PLAYERNAME Kris's SOUL and both the youngest and oldest part of them. The part of Kris that the other two simultaneously resent, love, and yet rely on. Their Human SOUL grants them power that they need, but the other two parts do not like being human. So there's a give-and take that we've seen throughout the game. PLAYERNAME is simultaneously the part with the most ties to Kris's past and the one who wants to try and move forward in the future. Also our POV character so whatever PLAYERNAME sees we also see. Since they're the part of Kris trying to move forward in life they're trying a different name. Of course, being the culmination of their being they contain the most intense collection of Kris's emotions. Good and bad, and their decisions are not always agreed upon by the other two. In particular, their intense affection towards Noelle can lead them to give into some weird impulses to try and get her close to them again...
why is fandom less fun when black ppl or aro ppl or trans ppl tell you to check your biases. if its 'just a headcanon' why is it such a big deal that ppl ask you to think about why you made it
why do you never engage with black characters, why do you always think the same type of character is transmasc/fem, why do you only find romance interesting to the point of ignoring plotlines so you can create ships
are we actually just being the fun police or are you just being a bigot. why is pretending we dont exist necessary for your enjoyment
A guilty conscious
inchresting characterization moment. she does seem pretty okay with checking bunches of things with Kris
i think its good to she/her the tgirl who doesnt know shes trans yet
