Pretty bad ambient occlusion
A rare shining example of SSAO done extremely well. The ambient occlusion in the gaps between the paving stones exposes depth and detail that wasn’t there before, but restraint was used in not over-darkening. Minor artifacts are visible around the protruding part of the arrow on Hanamura. The shader crucially does not have much effect in areas of direct sunlight.
Surgeon Simulator takes a scene that had nicely restrained lighting and shadows and over-darkens it with some seriously overdone SSAO.
SSAO is inextricably tied to the “High” quality setting, so if you want anti-aliasing you had better be fine with SSAO.
The marine in the center is affecting the ambient lighting on a wall and ceiling that is more than 10 meters away!
It’s like this scene was created just to show off how bad WWHD’s SSAO effect is
