You have had a crush on sweet, sweet Grace Chasity for a long time, and she hasn't had a single clue. Well... that's what you thought.
Or:
Grace Chasity realises she is a lesbian.
WORD COUNT - 5,939
Reader is Max Jägerman's sister, Michie is slightly mentioned (not at all a relevant plot point, but more for shits and gigs, at most is three lines), slight angst, religious themes and guilt, wingman Max, possible mischaracterisation, sibling bickering, no use of y/n, crummy writing of the Chasity parents.
Set in an alternate time where Max did not die after the prank, and he is a better person than what he used to be.
AO3 LINK TO BE ADDED
Just a quick note, I did struggle with this one a bit because I am not a lesbian but I did enjoy writing this! I am in no way experienced in writing angst properly, or anything religious, so please let me know if there are any inaccuracies in what I have written, or don't! I did black out for most of what I wrote and I barely remember the two and a half month writing session. I did attempt to make the reader somewhat similar to Max, but I am not 100% in it all being similar.
I hope that you enjoy reading! ♥︎
If there’s one thing you had to learn quickly about Grace Chasity, it is that she is the biggest prude alive.
You had seen Grace around Hatchetfield High’s halls, and even though you’d always attempted to flirt on multiple occasions, Grace’s “prudiness” always had her brushing it off as you just being overly friendly.

“Can I… carry your books, Gracie?” You’d smiled, leaned close with your body against the locker next to hers. The words coming out more sultry and quiet than usual, almost hidden between the growing noise in the halls.
Grace stared into her locker for a moment, confused as to why you would even want to carry her books. She’d remembered the week prior when Max had asked her the same thing, that shameful sinner of a man!
“Carry my books? Well… actually, I do need some help with carrying my sign! You can carry that instead.” Grace smiled, picking up the sign she’d glitter glued and drawn on the week before, she handed it to you and picked up her own books instead.
“Okay…?” You awkwardly chuckled and held the giant sign as Grace looked around for an exit point to get to her next destination. “Can’t you just push through the student body, Grace?”
“Heck no, nuh uh. Pushing through a crowd as big as this one will put me and my purity at risk! And I will not let anybody go anywhere near me. Not until I get happily married with a loving husband!”
You just nodded along, tapping your fingers against the sign's wooden beam. She always seemed so… erratic.
“Yeah? Well, anyway. I’ve got cheer after classes tonight, you should come watch.” Saying that had Grace whip her head around to face you, her eyes were wide and you tried to hold in the smile that started to creep up onto your face.
“Will the football team be there?” She asked, nervous. She didn’t want to see Max, and you’d always hung around him, so she didn’t want to seem like she was trying to steal him away from you. “I mean, I think that my daddy will let me stay back, if it’s just the cheer team.”
“Well… they’ll be there for a bit but we usually stay out longer to practise with our music, and… y’know, avoid getting cat-called while we actually practise.” You shrugged as Grace stared at you again, contemplating.
“I need to get to class… I might join in and watch.” She said before scurrying away.
“Wait, Grace– oh well… what am I supposed to do with this sign…?”

You shuffled into the gym foyer, with your bag hanging over your shoulder, and still holding onto Grace’s glitter covered sign. Peeking into the door window leading into the gym, you saw that it was empty.
“Hm…”
Did you get the day wrong?
You shrugged, then heard footsteps behind you, when you turned you saw Max.
“Hey dingus.” You say, walking over to him.
“What?” He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked at you. He looked around the foyer and awkwardly shuffled on the spot, your silence to his question threw him off. “Whatever, anyways, Ma said she was gonna make spaghetti and meatballs again.”
“Again? We just had that the other day…” Max just shrugged in response, scratching his head.
“Oh yeah, uh my practice got cancelled so I think Stacy and Brenda should be here soon.”
“Okay. Why’d you come here and tell me that then?”
“My phone died.”
“What, so you never charge it?”
“Wrong. I put it on charge, everything that happens after that is not my problem.” Max said, getting defensive over his crummy phone. “Goin’ home now, see you.”
You rolled your eyes as he started to saunter off, but was soon distracted by Brenda and Stacy running towards the locker room doors, they were giggling about something as Stacy pulled out keys to unlock the door.
You didn’t pay attention to what they’d said, and decided to follow them into the locker rooms once the door was unlocked. They didn’t particularly go out of their way to say hi, but they both had given you a small wave as they passed.
Grace hadn’t arrived yet, so you sent her a message, entered the locker rooms and mingled with Brenda and Stacy as you got changed.

Grace didn’t get to the gym early enough to talk to you, but arrived just about 10 minutes after the practice started. She quietly slipped through the gym doors, and seated herself on the closest bleachers next to the door.
She watched as all of the cheerleaders had huddled and talked and went through various ideas for the cheer routine, keeping to herself as she tried not to think about the small fitted outfits all of them were wearing.
What you were wearing.
‘It’s just shorts and a shirt, it’s just like how you wear your bathers when you bathe, Grace!’
She felt her chest flutter slightly when she saw you, like there was a nagging feeling just tugging at her chest. Her face grew hot as she stared, as you helped guide the other cheerleaders through the routine, as they helped you flip and cartwheel and everything through the planned cheer routine.
Grace had been there for around 20 minutes before she felt like she had to leave.
As the gym door swung shut behind her, Grace sped-walked away and entered the girls locker room. The lights flickered on as the door swung shut and Grace stood still, she looked around the room before her eyes settled on a blue and white letterman draped over a bag.
Grace recognised the letterman, or at least she thought that she did. Moving closer, she definitely recognised the colour, the hatchetfield nighthawk embroidered on the back and when she picked it up, she saw the small white ‘Jägerman’ on the front right of the chest.
Oh.
Oh no…
Grace felt her heart skip a beat, and the letterman slightly shook in her grasp. Seeing this letterman had confirmed the thought that she had constantly nagged in the back of her head, you and Max.
There couldn’t possibly be any other explanation as to why you would have the letterman.
Grace quickly folded and placed the letterman back on top of your school bag, then she turned to leave. She didn’t want to beat herself up over anything, but she also didn’t know why she felt so… guilty.
Atleast, she thought that was what she was feeling.
Grace turned on her heels and walked over to the wall of sinks, looking at herself in the mirror. Her cheeks were still flushed and warm, but they’d gradually gone cooler and were a light pink hue. She turned the tap on in front of her, and splashed some of the water over her face.
The small dink of something plastic hitting ceramic made Grace stop what she was doing. She opened her eyes, turned the tap off and saw one of her pink butterfly hairclips had fallen from her hair. It had hit the dip of the sink and fallen into the pool of water she’d made.
Grace picked up the butterfly hairclip and tried to dry it on the light blue woolen overshirt she had on, then she shoved it into her pocket and turned towards the exit.
Grace swung the locker room door open, then quickly slipped out and made her way through to the outside of the gym. The constant thoughts of you continued to cloud her mind and before she knew it, Grace had walked all the way home.
She greeted her parents, told them about her day and went to her room. Once the door shut behind her, she dropped her school bag next to the door, and then herself onto her knees. Grace clasped her hands together in front of her, leaning her elbows against the edge of her pink bedsheets.
She squeezed her eyes shut and felt a small twitch in her arms as she started to shake. Grace took a breath, trying to soothe herself and her shaking body as she started to mumble a prayer.
“Dear God… I acknowledge your Lordship over my life. I praise you and thank you for the ongoing transformation you are undertaking in me.” Grace took a shaky breath before she continued.
“Lord… I feel as if I have certain desires and feelings, but I ask for your guidance in my life, to help me find the answers that align with your will and purpose.” She pressed the curves of her thumbs against her forehead, feeling the dull pressure against it.
“But God, I trust you as my Creator, Saviour and Lord… I realise you know me better than I know myself, you are all-knowing with all things under your loving and capable control.”
“I ask of you, God… to provide me with clarity and answers to the feelings I seek, regarding a personal relationship I feel confused about. You have my full agreement to bless or block it. I claim this and ask it in Jesus’ mighty and wonderful name, amen.”

A few weeks had passed since Grace had muttered such a prayer inside the comfort of her own home. She was sitting at her desk, with her English books sprawled out in front of her. Her English class had started working on reading a book called ‘We Have Always Lived in The Castle’, and Grace told herself that she really wanted to get ahead of everyone else.
So she did. Grace scanned her desk for the Shirley Jackson book that was partially hidden underneath her plastic pink English binder. She picked it up, the bookmark she had threatened to make Grace lose her place in the book and she quickly opened up to the page to adjust it, that’s when she watched a small piece of paper fall out from between the pages.
When had she been so careless enough for the paper to rip? Grace knew that she’d been careful with her books, she always did. When she picked it up, she saw that the paper was not only folded, but also lined.
Oh.
Oh phew, she didn’t unintentionally ruin the book.
When she opened the note, written inside of it with a red pen was an address and then your name. Grace felt her face lightly flush, and she absentmindedly rubbed her thumb over your name.
Grace placed the book back on her desk, now distracted because of you, and walked to her nightstand to pick up her phone. She never really messaged anyone, and she only had very specific people's phone numbers saved. She clicked on your number, and sent a message asking about the address.
You’d replied with a quick ‘a sleepover, silly! 𐔌՞꜆. ̫.꜀՞𐦯’ almost immediately after she sent it, like you’d been waiting for her to message.
After she’d messaged you, Grace joined her parents downstairs for a brief moment. They’d been discussing the most recent news, and of that weird camp counselor duo they saw at church every week, when they saw Grace and their conversation was put on hold.
“Well, our darling Grace. What brings you down this late into your studies?” Mark said, sharply folding the newspaper he held and tucking it under his arm.
Grace held her hands against her sides, fiddling with the corners of her jean pockets, why did she feel so nervous? It was just asking to go to a sleepover.
“Um… I was wondering if I could go to my friend's house for a sleepover? She asked me to do one earlier.”
Mark glanced at Karen, with a small curious look in his eye.
“Well, only as long as her parents are home!” Mark chuckled to himself and untucked the newspaper from his arm, and reopened the newspaper to continue reading.
Karen let out a sigh before lightly tapping her fingers against her forehead, she dropped her arm a moment later and walked over to grace.
“I’m going to need the address- no not just the address, also her parents phone numbers, how are you getting there and getting home, Grace? Do you need me to drive you, would you like your father to drive you?”
“I can get their numbers, and I have her address here.” Grace said, handing her mother the paper with your address on it. Karen examined it for a moment, before nodding approvingly.
“Well, would you like your father to drive you? It must not be tonight, you do have school tomorrow.”
“No, it's on Friday. And she walks to her home, but she lives really close to the school so it will be safe. I wouldn’t be out for too long.”
“Well… alright. But you must tell me once you arrive, and tell me when you go to sleep-”
“You mustn’t worry her, Mother. Grace will be perfectly fine, just let our little lady have some fun for a night” Mark had cheerfully shuffled over, gently prying Karen’s distressed hands from Grace’s arms.
“Alright… as long as there’s no alcohol, or drugs, don’t speak to any strangers, don’t take anything from any strangers, okay Gracie?” Karen let Mark guide her arms away, she was still visibly more distressed than any typical parent.
“I’ll be safe, Mama.”

“Wait, okay so what. What do you mean, ‘invite Grace over for a sleepover’, huh?” Max crossed his arms and leaned against the kitchen island, sporting his own letterman again. “Y’know she doesn’t like me, like… at all. I can see it.”
“Yeah, cause you kept trying to get into her pants.”
“Well- I don’t do that shit any more. Not after that prank they all pulled.”
“Oh yeah, cause that near death experience changed you. How’s everyone?” You said, kicking at his foot as you walked past to grab yourself a bowl from the drawer across from him.
“Uhh well, Richie’s fine.”
“I didn’t say Richie?”
“I know?”
You stared at each other for a moment, and you saw how Max shifted uncomfortably for a moment.
“Oh my god- DID YOU KISS RICHARD LIPSCHITZ!?”
“WHAT! NO- I- uh… I’m leaving.” Max quickly walked out of the kitchen and locked himself upstairs in his room. You held back a smile before retreating to your own room, when you’d made it to the top of the stairs yourself, Max came out of his room again.
“Hey, wait just a minute.” He said, and you stopped walking. You let out a tired sigh and shrugged.
“What is it, Max?”
“Y’know, I just want to say that I’ve seen how Grace acts around you… I don’t think she knows it herself yet.”
“What are you talking about?”
“She likes you, like… like-likes you, and I don’t think she’s fully realised it yet.” Max shoved his hands into his pockets and shrugged.
“What makes you say this, Max? And where the fuck did this random wisdom come from?”
“Just… random. But I’ve seen this kind of thing before- y’know, not realising you like someone until it’s way too late.”
“You somehow bagged Richie though, so I don’t think it was too late.”
Max stiffened up and he stared at you for a moment. “How’d you know I was talking about myself?”
“Kinda obvious dude.” You said before you slipped into your own room and shut him out.

When Friday rolled around, you found Grace at her locker. She was in the middle of pulling out her bags, when she saw you walking towards her.
“Need any help, Gracie?” You leaned against the locker next to hers, and Grace thought about it for a moment before handing you the bag she finally pulled out of her locker.
She didn’t say anything, but carefully shut and locked her own locker. Grace watched you silently as the people occupying the halls slowly fizzled out as people left, she’d never really stayed behind this late. Unless it was to help her teachers pack up after fundraisers and whole school assemblies, she never actually stayed behind for anything other than that.
“So… you excited for tonight? I know that I am.” You moved closer to her, standing by her side and pulling the bag she’d handed you over your shoulder.
“I am… so, uh- what are we going to do tonight?” Grace awkwardly smiled and felt her heart flutter. Oh heck, why was it doing that?
“Have you ever been on a sleepover, Gracie?”
“I haven’t, not ever.”
“Oh! Well, then I will have to make this one extra special just for you.” You wrapped your arm around her shoulder and started to guide her outside. “We can watch movies, and stay up late. Ohh I could do your makeup, how does that sound?”
Grace thought for a moment, then nodded. “That sounds fun, I think.”
“You think? Hmm… then we’ll just have to try everything. What do you think of spaghetti and meatballs for dinner?”
“Oh, that’s fine. I like spaghetti…” Grace smiled as she walked with you closer to your house.
“Okay, cool. My ma wanted me to ask just in case she needed to go shopping again.”
When you both had arrived, Grace stopped walking to look at the house. It was huge, well bigger than her own home, but it was really nice. The front garden was nicely decorated, it had a few dozen colourful flowers and shrubs neatly scattered around. There was a simple standing bird bath perched in the middle of one of the flower patches, and Grace felt awkward standing in a space that was much larger than her own.
“This is… wow…”
“Hm? Oh, thanks! Ma’s a gardener, so she likes to keep everything nice. Also because of the area we live in, y’know the classified rich one.” You shrugged, turning around to wait for Grace to catch up. “Are you coming or are we doing this outside?”
“Coming.” Grace muttered, tearing her eyes away from the garden and quickly following you inside. “So how many people are gonna be here?”
“My whole family, so… my ma, dad and my brother.” You said, watching Grace nod along to what you’d said. “But my parents aren’t here yet, they’re still working so we’ll have the place to ourselves for a bit.”
“What about your brother?”
“Uh… oh, Max? I think he’s still back at school.”
What.
Grace didn’t say anything, but she soon grew very aware of her surroundings. She looked at the wall and saw a row of family pictures, Grace stared at them for a moment before it completely dawned on her.
Max was your brother.
The letterman she found must have been your own instead.
Grace felt the colour drain from her face, she felt so stupid for not realising it sooner. You looked back at her, concern quickly growing on your face.
“Woah- Grace, are you doing okay?”
“Huh? Oh- yeah, I’m okay. I just… I guess I didn’t realise that Max was your brother, that’s all.”
“Huh… oh, I mean you saw us hang out a lot so what did you… oh, Gracie…” You muttered and held back an awkward chuckle, before grabbing her hand and dragging her to your own room. Grace felt the colour return to her face, and then too much colour when her face started to feel hot again. Your bedroom door shut and you let go of Grace’s hand, then walked over to your own bed.
“Anyways, what do you wanna start with?”
.
.
.
.
.
It had gotten pretty late, and past the usual bedtime that Grace had followed for her entire life. She’d changed into her jammies a few hours prior, which was a loose fitted light pink shirt with a tiny angel embroidered on the chest and matching striped pyjama pants. You’d changed into your own pajamas too, and you both had eaten dinner and wished your own parents goodnight before they had retired to their own sleep.
“So… wanna do some makeup?” You asked, climbing off of your bed and heading towards your desk. Grace nodded shyly, fiddling with her hands as she watched you grab your makeup.
“Okay.”
You set the makeup down on your bed next to Grace, standing in front of her. She stared up with wide eyes before you picked up a makeup brush and tilted her head slightly up.
“Close your eyes and stay still, Gracie.” You said, letting go of her chin to pick up one of the colourful eyeshadow palettes you owned. “Do you want pink, purple or blue? Or maybe I could not do blue, I have some orange shades if you’d like?”
Grace closed her eyes and thought for a moment, she tapped her fingers against the bed covers and tilted her head to the side. She opened her eyes again and looked directly at you.
“Pink please.” You nodded at her response and dabbed one of your brushes into the lightest shade of pink you had. After a moment, you tilted Grace’s head back and she closed her eyes again.
After tapping the eyeshadow covered brush against Grace’s eyelids, you kept her head tilted up enough to see and let your hand rest against the back of her neck.
Grace’s ears started to ring, and the room around her grew quieter than she’d normally liked. She didn’t realise you’d stopped until you muttered a quick ‘done’ and let go of her. She opened her eyes and wondered if you’d let her see.
“I wanna give you a wing now, it’ll be small and you’ll look very very cute, Gracie.” You said, picking up one of the small eyeliner stamps you owned. “Okay, keep your eyes closed.”
Grace closed her eyes again.
You popped open the wing stamp, leaned back down and gently held Grace’s face up to press the stamp against the corner of her eyelid. After you’d held it there for a moment, you swiped the stamp over the edge of her eyelid and then repeated on the other side.
“Hmm… cute…” Was muttered underneath your breath and Grace felt her face grow hot again. Why did it keep doing this?
Your hands moved away from Grace.
“You’re red, Gracie.”
“Huh- what? No I’m not!”
“Noo, you definitely are.” You said, bringing one of your hands up to gently cup her face. With your free hand, you poked at her cheek before you let her go and stepped back.
Grace felt her heart flutter slightly and she stood up from the bed, clearing her throat.
“Ah, well…”
“Well?”
“Y-yeah, well! Everything is well!” She muttered, evidently fidgeting with her fingernails. “I just… I’m gonna go to the bathroom!”
You watched her scamper off out of your room silently.
.
.
.
.
.
The bathroom door quickly shut behind Grace, and she pressed her back against it to make sure the door was fully closed. Her skin lightly shivered at the contact of the wood, she sighed and reached her hand up to her neck to grab her cross necklace.
It was one of the only warm things that she felt against her skin right now.
Grace looked at herself in the mirror across from her, you’d done a good job. She could feel her heart hammering against her chest but couldn’t fully understand why.
At least that’s what she’d told herself.
Deep down, she’d like to think that she knew what she felt, but emotions were always different to Grace Chasity. Moving closer, she pressed her palms into the edge of the porcelain sink and traced the lining of it with her thumb.
“Get it together, Grace… this isn’t you.” She moved her hand up to pinch at her chin, to mimic how you’d held her before. “This… it shouldn’t be you…”
Grace stared at her reflection, trying to take in the makeup that you’d decorated her face with. It was cute… maybe, if Grace would let her call herself that. She’d only ever remembered being called cute, or adorable, by her parents as she grew up.
Grace has only ever been cute in the eyes of her own guardians, so why did you get to have the same treatment?
Grace dropped her hand down, brushing her hand against the porcelain before she turned to leave. She froze when she opened the door and saw Max silently waiting outside.
Oh no… had he heard?
Max didn’t move, but he’d started to look like a deer caught in headlights. Weirdo. Grace stared at him, her heart had jumped and started to unsteadily beat against her ribcage again. Faster this time, and she wanted to run again.
“Did she do your makeup, Grace? It looks good.” He said, pushing himself off from the wall he was leaning on and stepping past her to go into the bathroom himself.
“You gonna move, Grace?” She quickly left the bathroom, and Max shut the door after her. Grace let out a small sigh, her breath quivering slightly as she felt tears start to prick at her eyes.
The lump that started to form in her throat made her quickly look around the area she was in before she left. When she reached your room Grace peeked inside for a moment, like she was hesitant to enter it again, and watched you for a moment.
You’d cleaned up the makeup from your bed and had started setting up something that you had planned when you looked up and you both locked eyes for a moment. Grace didn’t say anything, the lump in her throat grew larger and before she knew it, she’d run off.
.
.
.
.
.
When Max had left the bathroom, he watched as Grace had turned and bolted towards the front of the house, before he quickly moved forward to follow. Max stopped in his tracks when you’d dashed out of your room soon after Grace had run off, and stopped in front of him.
“Where’s she going?”
“I don’t know, Max! Did you do something?!” Your voice came out slightly panicked, higher pitched and like you weren’t trying to choke on breathless air.
“Hey- I didn’t do shit.” Max said as the front door creaked open, then it loudly slammed shut a quick moment later. The two of you stared at each other for a second in silence, before Max stepped back and let you leave.
He just stayed rooted to the new spot for a moment, trying to process whatever had just happened. He’d simply just complimented her, so maybe that had just completely tipped her off? Max thought what he did was at least a little bit nice, but the idea of it coming from him after basically everything he’d said to her might have made it seem different than what he’d actually intended.
Max saw the way you’d look at Grace. He was very familiar with the look that girls had when they were in love with someone.
He tried to not think too long because now both you AND Grace were outside of the house at night, and that is not a good mix at all. Max turned on his heels, beelining straight for his room to quickly shove his shoes on and to get out of the house before any of you got lost.
Well, before Grace could get lost. And before she could lose herself more than she already evidently was.
Max locked the door behind him, neither of your parents had woken up. That was… okay, they somehow seemed to sleep like fucking rocks, so they were some kind of a perfect match to an outsiders perspective. To Grace, they looked the part.
After pocketing his keys, Max ran through the front garden and out onto the street. He could see you far up ahead, to the left of where he stood, and he immediately ran over. He would be proud of himself for being able to run so quickly, but this definitely was not the time or place for it.
Slowing down to a jog to catch up to you, Max stared down over the dip of the grassy hill at the edge of the road. He could see that Grace had run down, she was sitting down at the bottom of the hill, with her hands in her hair and her knees up to her chest.
Max glanced at you for a moment, and saw how you’d frozen up in the middle of the empty road. It looked obvious to him that you probably weren’t going to move, maybe you were scared?
He moved forward, carefully stepping down the hill towards where Grace sat. You watched him almost trip over the dirt a couple times, but were too stuck in your position to actually react.
When Max finally reached Grace, he stood a little away from her, like he was nervous that she’d attack him, or start to summon something from actual Hell to unleash upon Max and drag him down.
“Grace…?”
The hands in her hair twitched for a moment, then the rest of her body followed. She didn’t think that it was Max that would come down, Grace didn’t think he actually cared that much. She didn’t say anything yet, she didn’t have anything to respond with.
“Do you want to go back to the house?” Max asked, lightly tapping his hand against the sides of his leg, waiting for her to respond.
“Why do you care?” Grace spat out, her hands dropping from her head as she whipped it around to glare at him. “You never used to.”
Max paused and watched her for a second, then he stepped forward and crouched down next to her. She didn’t say anything about that action, and he had half expected her to jump up and yell something about ‘leaving room for Jesus’ or something, but she didn’t.
“You do know that I can see how you look at my sister, Grace?” Max let out a sigh, reaching down to pluck some grass out from the ground, in which he received a small, teary eyed glare from Grace.
“What are you talking about, Max? I don’t look at her in any way.”
“Grace, you have the same look like the other girls do when they look at me. You might not notice it yourself, but to others it is very obvious.”
“What?”
Max stared at her, taking in how she might have been crying while she was down here. The makeup you’d done on her had slowly started to wipe off onto her arms, and Max then lowered his voice.
“The way that girls look at me is the same look you do when you look at my sister, Grace.”
She stared at Max, sniffling a little before wiping at her nose.
“I don’t understand…” Her voice was small, and it had slightly trembled when she spoke. The lump in her throat had shrunk as she sat there, but it felt like it was going to start growing again.
“You like my sister.”
“She’s a really great friend, Max… that’s it.”
“Okay, but is it?”
Grace doesn’t say anything, which causes Max to let out a small chuckle and look up into the night sky.
“She likes you too, you know.” He said, then waited for Grace to verbally react, to hopefully finally realise that she wasn’t on something completely one-sided. Maybe to realise that it wasn’t as wrong as she thought.
“No she doesn’t…” Grace’s voice came out small, choked and quiet. “She doesn’t because you are telling me.”
“Do you want her to say it?” And Grace nodded, then froze for a moment just to glare at him.
“What’s happening to me?”
“Well, y'know... self discovery and shit, but it'll be fine.” Max shrugged, dropping the grass he was holding and wiped his hands as he stood. “I went through it and I've been fine… and so can you.”
Grace stared at the grass in front of her, silently mouthing what he had just said to her.
“Self discovery… but I thought I already knew myself? I know who I am supposed to be, I-”
“Do you want her to tell you or not?” Max’s voice cut through, making Grace shut up. He looked towards where you were, and gestured for you to come down. You’d moved off of the road, finally able to actually walk again, and started the trip down the hill.
Grace didn’t move from the ground, but she curled into herself again and shivered in the cold night air.
When you’d gotten close enough, Max stepped away and sat almost halfway up the hill from you and Grace. Sitting down next to her, you looked up at the sky, then at Grace. She turned her head to look at you, and her eyes looked more sad than tired. But Grace was tired.
“You okay, Grace?”
“No.”
“Why’d you run out of the house?”
“You.”
“Me?” You shifted your body around to completely face her, tilting your head to the side.
“Yeah…” Grace forced out a small huff of a laugh, then she started to cry. Her body slowly shook more than what it was when it had been trembling, from her tears rather than the cold now.
“It’s a bit cold out here, don’t you think?” You said, which resulted in a glare from a very cold Grace Chasity. “You definitely agree.”
“I do.”
“I do too.”
“What? Why are you agreeing with me agreeing with you?” Grace questioned, the glare she was holding instantly fell into an expression of confusion.
“Cause I like you.”
Grace felt her face go warm. Even if it was through the cold of the night. “Really?”
“Yeah… and it’s not like ‘oh I like you as a friend’, Grace.”
“It’s not?” Her heart fluttered at your words, and she started to uncurl herself to face you. Her hand dropped to the grass, and you reached out to gently grab it and hold it within your own.
“It is not.”
“Okay…”
“You do know that I like-like you, right Gracie?” You asked, lightly rubbing your thumb against her hand, it was cold so you squeezed it with your own to try and give her some warmth.
“Max told me.”
“He what?”
“He said you liked me because I like you but not in a friend way.” Grace muttered, then she shivered again and moved closer to you.
“Did that ruin anything between us?”
“Not at all.” Grace smiled, then she let go of your hand to stand up. “It’s really cold, I wanna go back inside.”
You nodded and stood up yourself. “We can go back and huddle for warmth.”

When you’d quietly snuck back into the house and gotten yourselves warmed up enough to properly function, you shut your bedroom door and looked over at Grace, who’d washed off her makeup and tucked herself into the right side of your bed.
Cute.
You climbed into the bed with her after, the sheets were cold for a moment before body heat came along and worked its magic. For a second, Grace watched you get comfortable before she moved closer to hug you. The sudden interaction made you freeze, and suddenly you were stuck in a position where you couldn’t really move to turn your lamp off.
“Grace, I wanna turn my lamp off.”
“It’s okay.”
“What…?” You whispered to yourself, then sighed and gave up on trying to turn off your light. After shuffling around and earning a huff from Grace, you both finally got comfortable enough to relax and fall asleep.

It was a Thursday night, and Alec had just been stood up on one of his new dates.
He didn't see you at first - his head down, staring at the wet gravel that shifted underneath the bottom of the nicest shoes he had. He was sitting at a small round table, there was an umbrella open above him that sheltered him from the light rain that was forming.
It was like he had been torturing himself, you knew that there was something wrong - you always did - but he would never tell you why.
Looking both ways down the street you didn't see any cars, so you crossed over towards him. You stood in front of the fence - next to where he was sitting - and looked at him.
“You look occupied.” Alec had jumped, hitting his knee against the table as he looked at you.
“Oh, bloody hell.” He grunted, almost holding back an eye roll as he leaned back in his chair. “What do you want.”
You stared at him.
“Are you waiting on someone?” Your eyes turned to the empty seat on the opposite side of the table, but eventually found their way back to his again.
“Have been.”
“How long has it been, exactly?” You leant against the fence and kept your eyes trained on him.
“A bit.”
“How long?”
“I'm fine.”
You stared at him again, it was silent - apart from the gentle rain that looked like it would pick up at any given moment.
“You're getting on my nerves.”
“Stood you up, did they?”
“Shut up.”
“How long have you been waiting?”
“An hour…?”
“So, yes.”
“To what?”
“This mysterious person, they stood you up.”
“She's just late.”
There's another silence.
“Oh, so it's a ‘she’ then?”
“Why wouldn't it be?” Alec looked at you, confused.
“No reason.”
“As if. Spit it out.”
“Can I sit down?”
“Why?”
“So you're not alone. And my schedule is pretty empty tonight.” You give him a small smile, nodding towards the chair.
“It'll be weird.”
“Why?”
“Because.”
“Because we're both men? We aren't gonna get attacked out on the street, plus we can just say we're having a meet up because it's ‘been a long time’. If you're scared.”
His eyes steer away from you, now staring at the chair in front of him.
“Fine. Sit down.”
You smile and walk away, to turn around the end of the fence and join him at his table.
It was tense for a few minutes, and awkward at most.
“What were you doing before you saw me?” Alec crossed his arms, sinking back into his chair.
“I was just on a walk.”
“Why?”
“Because I can?”
“Wow.”
“Why were you waiting for someone? In a restaurant, no doubt. It doesn't seem like you.”
“Daisy said that I was a grumpy old sod, said that I needed to find someone - or at least try to.”
“Daisy?”
“My daughter.”
“Ah.”
He had fallen silent after that, he nodded his head once before he started staring at the small table decorations.
“Have you eaten yet? Or do you plan on waiting forever?”
“Haven't eaten.”
“Why's that?”
“Don't typically… like this fancy restaurant smuck.”
“Then why don't you leave?”
“I made a reservation.”
“Oh.”
There's an awkward silence again, and the light rain grew the tiniest bit.
“Let's go somewhere dry.”
“I can't. I spent way too much money on this reservation, I cannot let it go to waste.”
“I'll pay you back. Plus, do you really want to eat in the rain?”
He was silent for a few, debating on whether he should respond or not.
“Not really.”
“Let's go somewhere dry.”
“Where?”
“We could probably go back to my place? I've got some leftover dinner from last night available. I made it myself.”
“What is it?”
“You'll see.”
—
On the walk towards your house, Alec had trailed behind you - like he was scared to come any closer, like it was frowned upon by everyone.
You looked behind you - towards him - and smiled again.
“C'mon Alec, we aren't like Orpheus and Eurydice. I'm not letting you disappear on me, come closer.”
“What does that even mean?”
You just shrugged and stood still, waiting for him to move closer before you walked again.
You soon fell into a rhythm, step by step and block by block, until the two of you had reached your house.
It was small, a tiny two story - it had a tiny balcony with two chairs, visible from the front of the gate. You pushed it open and let him in, locking the tiny latch behind you, then doing the same once you both had entered the house.
The tiny hallway from your front door was dark. But when you switched on the light, the two of you could see the multiple decorations around the place.
Alec doesn't say anything, he only looks around. You saw him pause in front of the small table pressed against the wall, he had picked up a small picture frame. It was one of you, when you were younger and carefree, next to you was one of your old friends.
“Who's this?” He was holding it, from what you could see, it looked like he was looking at the photo.
“Oh, that's one of my old friends. Haven't talked to them in a long time now.” You shrug and push further into the house, hanging up your coat and kicking off your shoes - only to stop and line them up together nicely since you had a guest.
He nodded as you passed, following you into the house.
“Do you want some wine?”
“Um.”
“Do you not drink it?”
“No I do, I just-”
“It's a yes or no question.”
Alec looks at you, like a little kicked puppy.
“Fine.”
“Excuse me?”
“Stay tonight, Alec. It's too late to walk now.”
“I'll be fine.”
“You don't know that, anything could happen.”
“Fine.”
"Yay.”
As you stood and placed your wine glass down, Alec looked at you silently.
"What?”
"C'mon, the couch is way too small for your tall ass. We can share the bed.”
“Share the bed. You're fine with it, right?”
“I can stay on the couch.”
“It's too small, Alec. You'll hurt your back and trust me, I've done it before.”
“I've dealt with sore backs before, I'll be fine.”
“You practically live off of having a sore back, just humor me this once?”
“Fine.”
“Thank you.” You start walking upstairs to your room, you had gotten the kind of house where the second floor was just one room.
—
It was almost 1am by now, the wine in your system had started rubbing off on you and you had flopped onto your bed - but not after changing into something more comfortable.
Alec, however, had tried to just use parts of his uniform as pyjamas for a night.
You didn't let him.
So there he was, laying on the left side of your bed in an old pair of your clothes and a grumpy expression etched onto his face.
After switching off the lamp next to your bed, you got comfortable and started falling asleep beside him. He felt odd - uncertain even.
It had felt almost foreign to him to have another person sleep by his side again, even if it was for just one night.
Alec's eyes had trailed over your face as you slept, and he had just one thought as he laid there - underneath your blankets and your roof.
Tonight was one of the many night's he would want to spend with you.
i have not reread this and i will never read it again
Work was tiring, life was just tiring in general. And you were sick of it! It was late - a bit too late for your liking - and you were just so unbelievably tired. You trudged into the house - after locking the door - and through the hall. As you flopped down onto the bed, you could feel Alec shuffle a bit next to you - switching the lamp on and looking down at the back of your head.
“You alright?”
All that had left your mouth was a muffled groan and a barely viewable shake of your head.
“You should change, love.”
You lifted your head, your hair falling in front of your eyes as you stared at him. He stared back, waiting for you to get up.
“I can wait all night, you know.”
You sigh, pushing yourself off of the bed and making your way to the wardrobe. You had gotten changed in the bathroom shortly after, into a black shirt and green pyjama pants.
When you entered the bedroom again Alec was sitting up against the bed frame, he had his glasses on and a book in his hands.
“I didn't know that you still read books, Alec.” You stated, climbing into the bed and shuffling underneath the covers.
“Daisy recommended that I should - said that I read so many files that my brain will turn to mush. Or something.”
“That's fair. What're you reading?” You felt his arm wrap around you, his hand was resting on your back. You moved closer, resting your head against the side of his chest.
“Uhh…” He turned the book to look at its cover. “Six of Crows, apparently.”
“What's it about?”
“Uhh, Daisy said it was about a heist? I haven't read that far into it myself.”
“Interesting.” You yawned, starting to relax against him. “How was your day?”
“Fine. Ellie forced me home early, she said something about me working too much. I just have so much to do.” Alec had put his bookmark back into the book again, placing it onto the bedside table.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah… how was your day?”
“Don't even get me started.”
“Terrible then?”
“Yes.”
“It's okay. You're home now.”
“I'll have to go back tomorrow.”
“I know.”
“I'm tired.”
“Do you want me to read to you?”
You stayed silent, resting against him.
“Maybe not… I don't think I am in the mood for any heists right now.”
You could feel him start moving to lay back down, his hand retracting from its place on your back.
“What are you doing?”
“Laying down, if you couldn't tell.” He took off his glasses, placing them on top of the book.
“Very funny, Alec.” You moved down to lay next to him, and in return he had wrapped his arms around you.
You relaxed against him soon after, resting your hand across his stomach and letting out a small sigh.
You both fell asleep soon after, it wasn't a surprise that you both had slept better than before. You have each other now, and that's all that matters.
