Light Yagami’s watch

guys i don’t know if this was mentioned before but a very kind and amazing person just pointed out the brand name of Light’s watch in canon and i am very shocked right now because i’ve been trying to find it out for years and ??

the name of Light’s watch is “Omega Speedmaster” manufactured by Omega SA, a swiss luxury watchmaker. as it turns out, this brand is also called “moon watch” which is quite ironic, considering Light’s name is literally moon. Ohba chose this type of watch in particular. here are its pictures:

i’m not too sure about the trick where it can open and store anything inside, so perhaps it was Ohba’s own imagination that worked that part out. but now i’m pretty sure that this is the brand of watch Light was wearing.

this is kinda late and i’ve never seen this article before but apparently the brand of Light’s watch was mentioned in the death note wiki. at least now more people know about it, and it’s only after this person mentioned it that i myself found out about it, so for more information about Light’s watch if you’re interested, you can check it out here.

Because I can’t leave well enough alone, I had to figure out what was the exact likely model of the Omega Speedmaster that Soichiro gave Light in 2004 when he entered university. Someone in the comments said it was the Speedmaster Tintin because of the checkerboard ring but that’s not possible because that model was first introduced in 2013.

The most likely candidate is the re-edition of the Speedmaster Mark II exclusively for the Japanese market, called the Speedmaster Japan Racing Special. Side by side with the manga panel of Light’s watch it’s as good a match as I could find that was contemporary with when Obata drew it.

The photo on the top left was the regularly colored version of the Japan Racing Special, but we also have this variety which I think more closely resemble the grey (and not white) hands of the watch Obata drew, the black dial back, and the silvery grey interior bezel (versus the solid black bezels in the regular one above).

This was a rare and special watch— only 2,004 were ever made and the release was timed to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. The Speedmaster’s claim to fame is that it was the first watch on the moon, round Buzz Aldrin’s wrist. Which is why the back of this Speedmaster looks like the photo on the top right. Given the characters for Light’s name are those for ‘moon’, it fits.

The choice of a chronograph (a watch with a stopwatch function) by Ohba and Obata becomes incredibly important for Light due to the exactly 40 seconds it take between writing a name in the Death Note and a person’s death. Time is important for a lot of Death Note rules and you don’t want to mess that up. So let’s take a moment of awe to realize that Light altered the mechanism INSIDE the watch to install the secret compartment; he literally rebuilt the clockwork inside an Omega to the extent it still functioned as a watch (and he trusted it to keep time) with the extra ability of opening the secret drawer.

Final bit of trivia: “For men who reckon time in seconds” was the original slogan for the Omega Speedmaster. That definitely describes Light Yagami.
