apple core trend with L and Light!
While L is standing up, giving a little explanation about his deductions to the Task Force, Light zones out since he already knows L’s thinking so well and can exactly predict what the man will say. He’s already at that finish line with L while they wait for the others to even find the trail. So instead of listening, he dreamily focuses on the shadow L casts on the wall, the man’s profile and stature cut against stark white. He shifts inch by inch until his own shadow covers and subsumes L’s, until no trace of spiky angles from unruly hair or the gentle slope of slumped shoulders remains. When L finally stops speaking, Light can imagine if the man wasn’t even there, and a pit in his stomach opens up like a sinkhole. The edges crumble inward and expand to cover his peace of mind, inch by inch, and subsume him.
“Is Light-kun listening?”
Light quickly steps to the side and nods, saying, “Of course I was listening, Ryuzaki” and parrots back L’s thinking precisely. Ah. There it is again, that awkward, imperfect silhouette distinct and leaning into his own. The illumination seems brighter around L’s shadow than it did before, as if arguing against the darkness, stating a case for existence, it’s worth.
old art dump :/ I haven't engaged in death note fandom for a while (and I deleted that account 2 years ago) but my death note phase will always be an important part of my artistic growth
“If we catch Kira, he is evil. If he wins and rules the world, then he is justice.”
Anybody ever think about how strange it was that when L heard the word ‘shinigami’ for the first time he flailed around and fell out of his chair (which seemed very at odds with his stoic and under-control personality at all other times)? Meanwhile the rest of the team, who are given to occasional freak outs and outbursts, are calm.
But then when he *actually* sees a shinigami with his own two frogeyes and thus has confirmation they are real, he just sits there in the helicopter like ‘huh.’ It’s just a very different reaction than you’d expect, and the opposite of everyone else (who didn’t put much stock in the first mention but lost their shit upon seeing the shinigami).
This makes me think that L had already suspected that something like a shinigami was behind the powers of Kira, but that was also his worst fear. It meant that he couldn’t battle this force with logic and tricks like he usually did, and that it was very likely he couldn’t win this case.
So even the mention of ‘shinigami’ was enough to confirm that worst fear, and by the time he actually saw one he had already accepted their existence. While everyone else was afraid of the appearance and presence of a shinigami, it was the meaning behind the shinigami’s role that terrified L.
One other interesting thing is that after L touches the death note and sees Rem, he goes inside his head thinking about the case and realizes there are two death notes. He doesn’t notice when Light reaches over and takes it, then when he does notice (Light screams) he doesn’t take the death note back. Just lets Light hold it like ‘ok’ and isn’t even watching him closely. Doesn’t stop Light from looking in it, comparing names. At this point he knew that just touching the death note was enough for something magic to occur (had just happened to him).
He let Light, the person he knew was Kira, keep the object of Kira’s power in his hands and didn’t watch him closely or question what he was doing. Even after he knew shinigami were real, even after Light screamed, even after knowing just touching the death note was magic.
the more you reread first arc the funnier it gets. L: we have to make sure the second kira and first kira don’t meet. light-kun you should go to aoyama with matsuda-san
l lawliet has the fundamental belief that as long as the destruction is under his own control then it is a Necessary Sacrifice. this is why he is upset about the fbi agents and naomi and ukita but gets lind l tailor to stand in for him without a blink and tries to let the yotsuba group murder people to test if his theory is correct. if they die for a purpose, if they die as part of his plan, then it’s okay.
similarly with light the smartest move would have been to not let him go at all but L cannot resist the opportunity to see his test subject’s reactions to a situation. he doesn’t want the first and second kira to meet but he’s the one letting light go to aoyama and asks matsuda to make sure he doesn’t do anything suspicious. so it’s Fine. ideal, even! (this leads to him dying)
he’s under the impression that anything can be a controlled environment if you’re paranoid enough
I USED TO HAVE HOOP DREAMS UNTIL I FOUND OUT THERE WERE OTHER WAYS TO SCOREEE 😈
Victory.
i havent read a lot of B fic so i dont know if this is an established thing(tm) or not but he’d be SO weird about kira wouldn’t he. like his entire life is predicated on the fact that everyone will die at the time he sees over their head and this is just not true anymore. i wonder if he’d be awed i wonder if he’d be terrified
