This year a person important to my husband - his grandfather Semyon Iosifovich - would be 100 years old. Semyon Iosifovich raised his grandson as a family and laid in him a lot of kindness and strength.
This Man went through several concentration camps, escaped, was a member of the partisan movement in Belarus, he was wounded twice. He received the Order of the Red Star, presented for the award for courage.
My husband's stories about my grandfather inspired me to create this painting in his honor.
Behind him are heavy memories of the barbed wires of the camps and the horrors of war that did not break him - they seemed to be refracted against his spirit. It seems to me that he was a very strong man, like the sea, which is why he retained the inner kindness that he generously gave to his little grandson, communicating with him, watching war films with him, which my husband now touchingly recalls.
And this kindness fell into good soil: after all, my husband, having become a father himself, follows the example of Semyon Iosifovich, when he also gives warmth and attention to his son.
Semyon Iosifovich himself was the father of two, now adults, children. I'm sure he often thought about them: they are symbolically depicted as two birds soaring over his inner sea.
The picture is made using the fresco technique. Gouache, acrylic, gypsum plaster. 2020.
