still chewing on this but I watched the episode where they discuss replacing hoynes on the ticket and Sam is so disgusted by it whereas Josh seems to feel that the ends (bartlet victory) justify the means. Sam has this sense of honor that Josh lacks and I think it would be really interesting for their ~relationship~ to ultimately crumble because of their ideological differences rather than circumstance

We talk all the time about how Sam's life was turned upside down by Josh showing up in New York but do we talk enough about how Sam asks Josh what he's doing working for Hoynes and he says "I don't know" - like this political animal who relies on people believing him straight up immediately confesses to Sam that he has no idea what he's doing working for Hoynes. I mean that's true love trust
I have been trying to reconcile sam's timeline with his age in an early draft of the pilot (31) and have settled on him skipping two grades somewhere along the line. so he starts college at like sixteen. spends every summer on the hill interning for various politicians/orgs. graduates law school around twenty-three. has a devastating dalliance with josh that summer that leads to him swearing off his idealism and starts working at gage whitney that year. he's there for like six years (ample time to be on the partnership track) before josh comes and sweeps him off his feet. voila
