My name is Kat, and this is my alterhuman sideblog! I'll be posting about my experiences as an otherkin here.
Specifically, I'm mermaidkin! Or mermankin. Or merfolkkin. I'm genderfluid, so any label is fine with me.
Only DNI is don't be hateful! This is a safe space for otherkin/therians, systems, and queer people. I do not welcome discourse or bigotry. I'm just here to talk about my experiences and maybe help a few people along the way!
I will be liking and following from my main blog, @theholygoose! I mostly reblog cats there, so be sure to check it out if that interests you!
Every year, the mermaid undertakes an annual migration. She travels thousands of miles away from her tropical home territory, into the cold, foggy waters of the north in hopes of finding a mate. The journey is long, but the months she spends away from home are crucial for continuing her species.
First crack at a moodboard! Might make another one with a more tropical theme later on, but for now, enjoy the vibes.
Tips for a landlocked mermaid (or other sea creature)
Hi all! As an ocean creature, I feel like we have it especially rough when it comes to living in a human body compared to land therians/kin. We get the double whammy of not only being born into the wrong body but into an environment that is fundamentally different from our own. And there aren't a lot of resources out there to help us cope with that!
Over the years, I've found ways to deal with my longing for the ocean and a different body, so I thought I'd share some tips with you guys in the hopes of helping a struggling oceankin deal with being on land.
Buy gear! There's not much in the way of therian-specific gear, unlike with many land therians (count yourselves lucky, guys), but the costuming and mermaiding communities have given us a lot to work with! There's tails, obviously, but did you know you can buy gill chokers? Fake ear fins? Fake dorsal fins? Wearable sealskins? Fake hand webbing?! Chances are, if there's a piece of gear you want, someone has made it. Or, if you're crafty, you can make your own!
Don't have a tail? Wrap a blanket around your legs nice and tight and arrange what's at your feet to look like fins. Obviously you can't swim like this, but this is what I did to alleviate dysphoria before I got my tail.
Consume media about your kintype! It can really help you connect with that side of yourself, not to mention that it's one way to transport yourself to an underwater world for a little while. I've already made this post about Roblox games for mermaidkin, but there's tons of other media that discusses mermaids and other sea creatures.
Watch ocean documentaries! They feature a lot of underwater footage and you can learn about your habitat and the wonderful creatures that populate it! I highly recommend Our Oceans as it goes into each of our oceans in depth and covers a variety of ecosystems and sea creatures, but there's tons of other documentaries with beautiful footage and educational content!
Watch diving videos! There's a wealth of underwater footage online taken by divers. If you know where in the ocean your kintype lives, you can search up diving videos for that area and go back home for a little while. If you don't, it's a great way to explore cool habitats! For bonus euphoria, pretend you're swimming with the divers.
Listen to ocean ambience! I highly recommend this video for waves and this one for underwater noise.
Listen to ocean-themed playlists! In addition to songs about the sea (or songs that just have those vibes™), a lot of them also have ocean noise in the background. They're great to listen to while you study or work.
Make art of your kintype! Draw pictures, write stories, make music, or do any other creative project based on your kintype! This can be especially helpful for mythical kintypes, as we tend to vary from individual to individual a lot more than therians!
Did you know Google Maps has underwater photo spheres? They offer a 360 view of underwater environments! Most of them are in South Pacific coral reefs, but there are some other tropical areas that have them! You can also visit coastal habitats in almost any area of the world!
Consume thalassophobia content! Kind of a weird one, but for me at least content about the ocean that's meant to scare people brings me comfort. They tend to show the ocean in its true ferocity and depth, something often lacking from other ocean-based content.
Go swimming! Take advantage of local bodies of water, public pools and swim centers, or even a bathtub. If, like me, you lack access to even a bathtub (we only have stand-up showers at my house), even a shower or a sink/bowl full of water can be helpful. Anything to get wet!
Try a water-based hobby! Scuba, free diving, sailing, fishing, mermaiding – anything that connects you to the water. Just be sure to do your research and be safe about it!
Eat seafood! If you like it, of course. Consider adding fish, squid, or seaweed to your diet!
Do vocals! If your species makes a specific call, try to mimic it. It's okay if it doesn't sound good at first – practice makes perfect!
Visit an aquarium! I find that aquariums are the closest I can get to being in the ocean again, since I live so far away from it. It's also a great way to learn about your kintype or the creatures it shares an enviroment with!
Consider getting into marine biology! You don't have to dedicate your life to studying the ocean, but take some opportunities here and there to learn a few fun facts about sea life!
Embrace an ocean-themed aesthetic! There's a ton of ways to incorporate the ocean into your wardrobe, makeup, or decor. Mermaidcore, sirencore, piratecore, dark nautical, fruiteger aero, coconut girl – all of these are great options to explore.
Embrace blue! Blue clothes, blue bedding, blue paint for the walls. Makes you feel like you're surrounded by water.
Use vivterms! These are words to describe your body/environment as if it were the body/environment of your kintype. Your skin? Scales. Your legs? Tail. Your room? Cove. Or whatever term is most comfortable for you.
Get sea-themed stuffed animals! Especially if you're a social species. You can pretend you're with your podmates.
And finally, think outside the box! Because we make up a minority of the therian/kin community, there aren't as many resources readily available to us when it comes to our kintypes. So, we've gotta get creative. These are things I find help me, but feel free to add on here or adjust as needed.
shout out to all fish therians/kins, mermaids, sirens, or any other ocean/sea creature related alterhumans living in landlocked states or otherwise don’t have access to pools and places to swim cuz i feel ya 😔
mermaid internet cafe in an upside down boat, where the mermaids go to read fanfiction, and do whatever else they do on the internet. remote work, probably.
edit: 2 weeks later i realize the acronym should have been We Have A Lot of Exceptions to spell whale. oh whale.
Hi all! As a landlocked mermaid, sometimes it can be hard to satisfy that craving for the ocean. But I found some really cool roblox games if you're looking to connect with your kintype!
MERMAID ISLE - this one has a large selection of tails, lots of quests, a huge map, and a singing mechanic! There's also tons of fun events. At time of writing, there's a selkie event going on, so be sure to check it out if you are a selkie or just like them!
MERMAID LAGOON - also has a pretty good map and tail selection, lots of cool islands to explore, and you can look for treasure and sell it at the market!
MERMAID TESTING - this is an H2O fan game designed for roleplaying. The tail models are really good and you can customize your character with different clothes, hairstyles, and tail colors! The H2O tails specifically give me a lot of euphoria, so this is a personal favorite of mine <3
AQUATICA OBSERVATORY - this one isn't specifically a mermaid game, but it's one I often visit to feel more at home! It has one of the most realistic ocean biomes on Roblox, with lots of cool sea creatures to learn about! You can earn money by finding treasure chests and cleaning debris and use it to upgrade your diving gear. There's also a mermaid gamepass for $20 if you want to swim here as a mer!
I'll update this if I find more games. I'm also thinking about doing other game selections for other kintypes, so send me an ask if you want me to cover a specific one!
