Smutley - AIDS (PSA)
When watching this video, I instantly gathered the premise that “It’s important to use protection when having sex”.
With there being numerous sexually transmitted diseases known to man, it is wise to use any form of contraception to avoid these along with unwanted pregnancy. In this PSA, the character Smutley gained a few illegitimate children and undoubtedly, I’m pretty sure he received a few diseases.
The way this PSA was set up, is very creative in my opinion. First off, with the main character’s name (Smutley) being a highly derogatory, it allows the audience to kind of grasp how he is – which can be seen as a social downgrade. With having Joan Jett’s single Bad Reputation playing in the background adds just the kick it needs to the comedic PSA about sex.
Adding the element of comedy to a serious topic that majority of the world already knows, is genius! Constantly being beat over the head with the “Safe Sex” topic can bore an audience, but by adding a comedic flare to the dreadful situation at hand makes it appealing to the audience’s eye and funny bone; thus, making it memorable.
Hands down, this is one of the most memorable PSA’s that I have ever watched. I am aware that AIDS is a serious situation, but putting this sort of spin to it makes me more aware of the risks I would be taking if I was not more careful with my “activities”.
