Money and Happiness When you are raised in Thailand, you are taught that money is the main goal & purpose in life. Money supports your family. Family in Thailand is un-seperable, and supports itself as a group effort, from all members of the family. The first time I met an American man, I was shocked at how he seemed not to care about money. If there was enough money to get by, he was satisfied, and never seemed to want to buy anything expensive - or anything at all from what I knew. This is diferent than the Thai men I had known previously before. I was previously married to a Thai man, who enjoy spending money on parties, often paying for large amounts of food and liquor to give to tens and sometimes hundreds of people. We had merry parties with large extended families, but when I met this American man, he seemed to be displeased by the culture of excessive partying and huge spending. He said to me one day, "When I grew up, If you didn't finish all the food on the plate, we weren't allowed to leave the dinner table." At first I laughed, thinking it was just silliness, but the more I saw my people's eating habits the more I felt sorry for all the wasted food. Thai people have a habit of placing tables literally full of different plates and dishes. This is mainly to show face, a way to show off one's success in a 3rd world struggling economy. Rising Up I went to the United States one summer after meeting my new American boyfriend. He showed me Hawaii, an sub-tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean For an Thai person grown up in a rural environment, when people think of the United States, what comes to mind mostly is a picture of New York City in winter. As funny as this seems, that's what happens when you grow up in a country that decides it's own agenda is more important than presenting the truth about the whole world to it's people. I'm not one to complain much, and love my country and my king, but there are a few adjustments that need to be made to the education system. This is not an insult, it is a honest evaluation, of which I would like to help make better. You see.. Education I was put into the 'hi-so' high-school, or as we call it 'mattayom'. This school had fees that my parents had to pay every month, just to keep me there. The classrooms are falling apart, windows are rusted either open or shut, desks have large holes in them, and the school's property is not really respected as it should be. This is an institution of education. We deserve better than this. United States ♥ The United States of America has shown me one important value that I think all Thai people should try to understand. Live within your means The great people of America's rural areas have a pride instilled in them, a kind of rebellion to what is normally accepted as good. These people have no want for big money, no need for a new car, and would never think to spend lots of money showing off. My boyfriend was from a town like this, and he showed me what it means to be proud of yourself, for yourself. Letting your 'community/family ego" go for an Thai person can be extremely difficult - for your family stays closely-connected with you your whole life. What needs to happen in families is a pride for 'what they stand for' instead of 'what they have'. In the United States, pride and respect are earned by doing good deeds and being a trustworthy, honest person. This is what the world needs a little more of. ♥♥♥
