Svetlana's "since when did you start smoking again?" is such an overlooked line that implies so much. Because why would Ilya have stopped smoking and suddenly started up again at this point in time? What I'm saying is thank you Jacob Tierney for overtly suggesting that Ilya stopped smoking for Shane, even with them meeting as rarely as they do, and now that Shane's broken it off he's taken it up again because what's the point of quitting if it's not for him?

Daenerys Targaryen’s fall arc began at the end of season 1 when she killed Mirri Maz Duur in a spectacularly cruel and unusual way. Dany wasn’t Mirri’s saviour, she was Mirri’s oppressor. Dany’s ambition to take the Iron Throne is the direct reason as to why Mirri’s village was destroyed and why Mirri was raped and enslaved. Mirri had no moral obligation be thankful to Dany - and she was perfectly justified in opposing and undermining her. Just like all the slaves of Slaver’s Bay was justified in rising up against their oppressors.

Furthermore, Dany choosing to burn Mirri alive was a huge sign that something was wrong, especially since the show had already established that burning people alive was to be considered as an especially horrific way to kill people and a method of execution particularly associated with the tyranny of the Mad King. The fact that Dany decided to kill a slave in the same manner as her tyrant father should have been a huge red flag to the audience. 

This doesn’t mean that Dany was pre-determined to become the tyrant she ended up being. She had several opportunities to turn away from the path of violence, she even tried to for a while. However, in the end she always fell back on extreme violence - either because she was angry or because it got her results quicker. Violence was the easy way out for her after she acquired so much hard power - because no one else had such a huge army or grown dragons.

The key feature of any fall arc is “the lie”. The lie is the character’s central belief that drives them forward but inevitably leads to their doom. The character is shown other ways of being, but always rejects them in order to cling to the lie.

Daenerys’ lie is taught to her by Viserys in her first scene of the show. That Westeros is her home and anything they do to get it back is justified, whether that is selling your sister for an army, or invading with blood thirsty savages.

Anything she does is predicated on that lie. It is her downfall. It is her tragedy.
