Keep doing what you like and enjoy your privacy, your freedom, and ORIGINAL ideas, because anyone can jump on the groupthink train. Approach your friends for new threads. 

All too often, I see people getting discouraged because they don’t feel they’ve been embraced by a particular fandom, or their wishlist postings go ignored. They want more threads but just wait for those threads and partners to come to them, often putting things in the tags hoping strangers will come and find them… 

And there’s nothing wrong with that. Not really. But it may not be very effective either for getting you what you want, or for helping your friends know you genuinely value them – not just their muse. So, here’s a suggestion that I don’t seem to see all that many people doing, just going off of how often I see people posting about wanting new threads, new partners, etc: when you want new threads, don’t forget to also approach your friends. 

If they’re already writing one thread with you on here, odds are they like you, so when there’s a specific plot you want, try to think of a way to make it work specifically for your character and theirs, and go talk to them about it – even if it means asking them for an AU. Don’t wait for them to come to you. Pop over to their IMs and pitch the plot. There’s nothing wrong with crossing fandoms or doing AUs, not if both RPers are enjoying it – it can be a great way for everyone to explore new aspects of their muse. All too often, I see people seem to sort of pigeonhole their RP partners into just one role or another (ie Marvel friends, or Spartacus friends, or Space Weirdos). They don’t go ask them for new things, especially not something outside of the parameters they’ve (probably subconsciously) assigned them, they just seek out new partners from the Tumblr-void. 

I’m really lucky to have a couple amazing partners that are always down to be like ‘hey so what if we did this one thing,’ but I also know I need to be better about approaching the partners I have (and the mutuals I haven’t plotted with yet!) for other threads…

And so do you. 

Don’t forget your friends. If you have a couple RP friends and yet you keep posting about looking for threads outside of them, if you get sad about not getting those games, what message does that send? And how does it help you to not be getting the stories you want?

A good chunk of the Tumblr RPC seems to be abandoning ship in the wake of the Nippocalypse, which is a good opportunity for those of us who remain to try and change things for the better, so please, consider changing this. Remember your friends. Remember your mutuals. Talk to them. Build a stronger community not by just seeking to have dozens of new connections, but by building stronger connections, stronger writing (and communication!) relationships with the people you already have.

My dash has always been peppered by what I personally refer to as “Paper Airplanes,” posts about wanting a specific plot/AU/general scenario that range from the highly specific to the near guilt trippy “no one will do x.” However, since the Nippocalypse (and yes, Shiv, you know I had no option but to reblog…) last year, it has progressively increased to now be at least 50% of the posts I see at any given time.

When you send out a Paper Airplane, it’s just that; you may as well write that down, fold it into a paper airplane, and toss it. Your likelihood of someone picking it up is far lower than it just going off into the void of unanswered tumblr RP prayers. Especially with these posts being of such high prevelence, people are highly likely to just filter them out as more non-pertinent stuff on their dashes. Even people who might otherwise be interested.

That very much goes for the constant, and most common, “ship with me you cowards” posts. Guys. Guys, guys…guys. I know, it’s supposed to be funny and all, but some of you seem to really want those ships and threads. It never was a satisfying option to sit and wait, but now it really isn’t. The RPC has gotten smaller and more insular, but the good thing about that is that you are now even more likely to already be interacting with or following the people that have the keys to your RP happiness.

But you have to say something to them. Not in their general direction, vaguely, hopefully, on the dash!

I know it’s not an extremely easy thing to express ourselves, as a community of people who are as a majority less than socially comfortable, adept, or even capable, but it’s the literal only way to get what you want and have a good experience. Every time I see someone complain about how their entire fandom has ignored them, they never had any partners or plots or ships, couldn’t compete with their duplicates…I have to wonder, did you speak to anyone about what you wanted, did you come with clear ideas and a willingness to communicate even a little bit, even awkwardly? Or did you just keep tossing paper airplanes? (And did you follow through if you did, but that’s a whole other thing.)

And I know this can be even harder in a community that simultaneously is obsessed with shipping but equally obsessed with denying it and guilting themselves over it like a bunch of literal, old school Puritans, to ask about shipping. So, if you’re really interested in That Ship, but simply cannot make yourself ask about it? Go on and propose your idea for a plot, express your interest in someone’s wishlist idea(s) and/or a verse or two. Yes, people do lie about shipping their muses with chemistry first and foremost, but most of the time, that lie is that they just want to ship their muse but don’t want to be belittled and shat upon by people for it, not that they won’t ship! So, go on and get into the thread, see if that ship does develop, it’s not only totally possible, it’s infinitely more possible than just bemoaning, guilting, and memeing all over the dash daily until it magically happens for you!

Appreciate your friends. Even if you’re really antisocial and can’t do the OOC talking thing a whole lot, many people are okay with that if you communicate this fact and communicate what you want, are an active participant in the plotting and thread. I’ve got a major problem doing too much OOC talk, you don’t have to BFF everyone, trust me, it’s cool. But a hell of a lot of the time, people seem to only want to have a single thread per mutual, when that same mutual has already established an interest in your muse and works out well with you, the mun. That’s just silliness! Have three mutuals and 130 threads between the three of you! Especially you guys with mutiple muses.

So don’t just appreciate them by dropping them a “hey” every now and then or tagging them in something of interest; appreciate that they exist and offer them the chance to do more with you. If they didn’t like writing with you, they wouldn’t be right now. That doesn’t mean use your friends/mutuals, nor does that mean you both should be forcing yourselves to be 100% open to 100% of the ideas 100% of the time. If it isn’t going to be agreeable to both of you and fun, don’t do it. For the love of dog, don’t pressure your friends into things either, the passive aggressive pressuring in the RPC is pretty wild. If your mutual doesn’t know you well enough, for example, to know you mean no pressure by it when you say “ugh, I had yet another person drop this plot idea I’ve wanted to do,” don’t say it! Adding a “lol no pressure” to things doesn’t change it.

Be respectful to each other, actually bother to reach other to each other, and appreciate what you have in each other…and you will find that most, if not all, of your desired plot ideas, ships, and AUs will happen. Have some patience, this is a hobby that takes establishing yourself and growing these relationships with people through reaching out to them and being open yourself, and it might take you a few months, a year, a couple of years before you have That Ideal Plot. This isn’t watching a movie, it isn’t instant gratification. Even a TV dinner takes a few minutes to cook.
