Trinity jerked awake, beads of sweat accumulating on her forehead, heart racing. She panics as she realizes she cannot move. She tries to break free from whatever is holding her down, unable to use her voice, only little mumbles coming out. She feels the weight from around her being lifted, a warm palm being placed on her cheek, wiping away the tears.
"Shh, it's only me. You're safe." She grips at Yolanda's wrist, breath evening out. The panic attacks have become less severe and less frequent, but still haven't disappeared completely. Once she catches her breath and becomes aware of her surroundings, she lays her head on Yolanda's chest, the feeling of fingers running through her hair calming her even more. She takes a moment to just listen to the beat of Yolanda's heart, realizing that today is going to be her first shift back after everything that has happened. She already had a feeling that everyone knew who the patient was and what happened, considering the messages she got from her frien- colleagues- weren't vague at all.
"Do they know?" She askes softly into Yolanda's chest.
"Who baby?" Yolanda asked, genuinely confused.
"People from the ED, or basically the whole Hospital. Do they know who he was and what he did?" She feels Yolanda tense up, her breathing stopping for a moment too long. Trinity only asked to try and put her mind at ease but considering Yolanda's reaction she immediately sits up, looking at Yolanda in disbelief. Yolanda avoids eye contact, her mouth opening and closing, trying to figure out what to say.
"Yolanda..." she hates hearing Trinity use her full name, it sounding almost foreign compared to the sweet nicknames she usually gets called.
"Look at me, do they know?" Trinity is sitting up, legs and arms crossed, regarding Yolanda with raised eyebrows.
"How?!" Trinity almost yells. She is standing infront of the bed now, arms stretched out with her palms facing up in front of her in an exaggerated manner.
"Walsh told me a med student looked him up on the internet after seeing your reaction, and some old news articles came up. You were named in a couple of them." Yolanda finishes quietly, finally looking up at Trinity.
Trinity scoffs in disbelief and crosses her arms again, turning her body away from Yolanda.
"And were you ever going to tell me?" Trinity shakes her head at the silence that follows. She knows she shouldn't be angry at Yolanda, but she has always struggled with directing her emotions to the people that actually deserve it. She usually takes it out on people she feels safe with. Instead of voicing any of this, she turns and starts grabbing clothes out of the closet.
"I'm gonna take a shower. I have to go grab some things from my apartment before work." She turns and makes her way to the bathroom.
"Trin, please. Let me get ready and we can stop by your apartment on the way? We can pick Dennis up too." Yolanda tries to reason. She is also standing now, reaching out to grab Trinity's hand. She allows it which surprises Yolanda. She feels a light squeeze.
"I'm not mad at you, Yo. I just need some time alone before the shift. I will see you at work okay?" Trinity leans in and kisses her softly. Yolanda only nods reluctantly.
When Trinity gets out of the shower she sees Yolanda in the kitchen. She hands her a lunch bag and a flask of warm coffee. Trinity almost gives up on her plans but knows that she needs to get into a proper headspace before getting to the Hospital.
"Your uber will be here in 15 minutes."
Trinity knew Yolana will never allow her to walk. She walks over to her and kisses the worry line from her forehead and wraps her arms around her waist.
"I will see you at work okay? Try and be nice to the people today." Trinity smiles softly.
"I can't promise anything, especially with Ogilvie-" Yolanda immediately shuts her mouth, realizing her mistake.
"So it was him?" Trinity doesn't pull away from Yolanda, studying the frown on her face. "Please don't murder a med student. You won't do well in prison."
"I would thrive in prison thank you very much, and I will try and restrain myself."
"Mmh you're too much of a neat freak. I mean your surgical text books are alphabetical and size assorted, that's a talent." She smile and leans in to kiss Yolanda, her hands tightening around her waist. Yolanda reaches up to cup her cheek, deepening the kiss. Trinity smiles as Yolanda moans into her mouth. They break apart when her phone dings. She rolls her eyes at the intrusion.
Trinity smiles and kisses her one more time, grabbing the lunch bag and backpack, shoots a smile over her shoulder and makes her way to the elevator. As soon as she is alone and distraction free, her mind starts to race again. The peace was good while it lasted.
She finds Dennis making breakfast when she enters the apartment. He looks up confused but is interrupted before he can say or ask anything.
"Just grabbing my nametag huckleberry, the uber is waiting for me downstairs." Trinity quickly mentions as she walks into her room.
"Your shift doesn't start for another hour-"
"Better to get there early considering I missed a couple days. See ya." The door shuts before Trinity could see the worried look on his face.
Trinity thanks the Uber driver and gets out of the car. She stares at the entrance, her nerves almost getting the upper hand, wanting her to turn around and go back home. She shakes off the feeling and heads inside. She is greeted by Ellis at the nurses station.
"Doctor Santos, good to have you back. You're early though." Ellis says, tapping Santos on the shoulder.
"Good to be back. Thought I should get an early start in case I missed something."
"I get you. Hey I have an interesting case of a foreign object where a foreign object should not be, wanna join?"
"Obviously." Santos chuckles as she follows Ellis. The rest of day shift slowly starts showing up, relieving nightshift. Ellis handed her a KitKat with a "call me if you need me" note attached. She appreciates Ellis for knowing how to be discreet and never pushing her to talk.
It's almost 4 hours into her shift when a trauma was called in. Construction worker versus rogue jackhammer. Multiple stab wounds in both his feet, lack of safety boots very evident. As she was busy assessing the damage, a familiar voice grabs her attention.
"What do we have Odds?" She looks up. Garcia sends her a quick wink and immediately goes back to assessing the damage. As she was busy Ogilvie enters frantically.
"Too late Beanstalk, initial assessment is done. Surgery is a go. Prep him for transfer to the OR." Garcia interrupts as she takes her gloves off and pushes past him, sending a death threatening glare his way.
"Would this be the second med student you have bursting into tears today Yolanda? I heard about the poor soul who endured your wrath upstairs." Robby asks, slight amusement in his voice.
"I don't tolerate incompetence Robinavitch." She says as she exits the trauma room.
Everyone is quiet, Santos not even bothering to hide her smile. She removes her gloves as they wheel the patient out, and heads to a computer to continue with charting.
"Excuse me Doctor Santos." She braces herself as she turns in her chair.
"How can I help you Ogilvie?" Santos stands up and crosses her arms.
"I wanted to apologise for being late, and for looking you and that other patient, Ronnie, up-" Santos holds up her palm to stop him.
"If you are not presenting a case or querying about a patient, it's best for you to stay out of my way." She turns around and walks away. She sees Whitaker in her peripheral vision making his way to Ogilvie, but she doesn't stick around to hear what he says. She doesn't even know where she is going, she just needed to leave his general vicinity. She decides to check on a patient that came in earlier with a possible concussion. A 23 year old college student who tripped down the stairs running late for class.
She slides open the curtain to see Mckay already there. She gives her a tight lipped smile and goes over to the computer.
"Has the CT results been uploaded yet?" Santos asked, while checking the computer, not trusting herself with any unnecessary silence.
"Yes, mTBI. Relative Rest, limited screen time, Sleep and Acetaminophen for the first 24 hours followed by gradual activity and return to normal activities such as school after 48 hours. So Anthony, I will print out these instructions for you, but please don't cacoon yourself in a dark room for long okay?"
Anthony just smiles and nods shyly. Santos mimics his nod and makes her way out, McKay following behind.
"Hey, are you still doing okay? I know that's a stupid question. "
"Yeah I'm fine, thanks." Santos breaths out, fiddling with the stethoscope around her neck, looking everywhere except at Mckay.
"Okay, I won't push. Just so you know I accidentally bumped his leg more than once while checking on him, and Walsh went very light on the pain meds." McKay gives a small smile as she walks away. Santos could feel her eyes stinging. She knows she needs to find Dana or Whitaker because they are the only two people besides Garcia that can calm her down. She spots Whitaker busy in a Trauma, pre occupied with trying to stop a bleed so he is out. She spots Doctor King and makes her way over.
"Hey have you seen Dana?" She flinches as she hears the crack in her voice.
"Oh she's with a sexual assault patient. She is still the the only SANE nurse besides Emma, but she's nightshift." King explains softly. She finally looks up at Santos, her eyes immediately lacing with concern at the free flowing tear falling down her face.
No, no. Not here. Not now Santos. Get your shit together. Her chest tightens and she can barely breathe. She tries to walk away but it feels like she is frozen in place. She can faintly hear King call Perlah and Princess before she feels soft hands guide her to the bathroom, an empty room not available. The world spins and it feels like she is walking on Jello. She hears voices but cannot make out any coherent words. She falls to the floor and immediately backs up against the wall, pulling her knees to her chest. She tries to ground herself and keep herself in this reality, but she hears one last sentence before she slips.
"Page Doctor Garcia now!"
