J.-L. Gérôme (French, 1824-1904) portrays Rachel in a crimson classical robe, embodying the spirit of ancient Greek tragedy. Surrounded by theatrical and archaeological references, she stands poised between performance and history, reflecting the actress's legendary command of tragic roles.

NB : Rachel Felix (1821–1858) is one of the greatest actresses of 19th-century France. She revolutionized French theater by reviving the classical tragedies of Corneille and Racine, performing them with remarkable emotional restraint, clarity, and intensity. At a time when theatrical acting was often exaggerated, Rachel's natural yet powerful style captivated audiences across Europe.
