"From Under the Dust" by: Author Anne Fleming was an amazing project. SEEDS had the opportunity to use full creative authority to create this book that looks like a vintage book with a leather cover.   The cover was the most amazing journey through the vast range of printing options at our disposal. The cover was printed on PLIKE chocolate, on a Heidelberg GTO, using a copper metallic ink, with a special mix of opaque white to keep the metallic from disappearing on the sheet when it dried back or when it was turned into the light (as metallic inks can take on different effects in the light and often times do not even show up) The white mix saved the day to have the copper PMS hold the look and feel of the worn off leather.  We then took the cover to the foil stamping machine and added the gold foil, and the planned de-bossed stamping to create the leather like feel on the PLIKE.  Did not work "as planned" (as the die was not deep enough to stamp the leather grain, and a counter die did not work with the thickness of the cover.)  Solution we used a clear opaque foil stamp with the de-bossing die and that did the trick to create a sheen, that perfectly matched the feel and look of worn leather with the copper PMS, in the worn and weathered areas.

Printed cosmetics outer carton, 165# Classic Crest DTC-double thick cover, printed offset on Heidelberg 4/4 color with watercolor image for the inside ( not a poor color balance of the pink interior...clients selection.) we suggested a rose PMS PANTONE flood coat. Oh well. Foil stamped text and rose outline, done on Heidelberg Windmill.

Asia Pulp & Paper's New Anti-Deforestation Stance

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), one of the world’s largest paper companies, announced earlier this month that it will no longer cut down natural forests in Indonesia and will demand similar commitments from its suppliers. The announcement was received with guarded optimism by Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network,World Wildlife Fund, and other NGOs who have waged a persistent campaign to change APP’s forest policies. Indeed, APP’s new policy—which includes sourcing all material from plantation-grown trees, ceasing clearing of carbon-rich peatland, and engaging more with local communities—is significant, both for the business world and forest conservation. APP and its suppliers manage more than 2.5 million hectares of land in Indonesia and produce more than 15 million tons of pulp, paper, and packaging globally every year. Created some plantable seed pod cards for Waste Management for the Phoenix Open event.  Difficult to print, as the paper does not run easily through the digital press's and the paper is so variable in thickness that it tends to need a 100% attention on both ends of the press.  In the end the job was printed offset on the Heidelburg GTO speedmaster, and looked great but it was definitely a challenge to run.

The History of American Beekeeping by: Frank Pellett.  A Seeds 2013 reprint of the 1938 classic. Pellett reviews the development of beekeeping ideas, equipment, tools and processes. There is considerable attention to Langstroth, Doolittle, Root, Dadant and other industry pioneers. Hive types, smokers, extractors, queen rearing, beekeeping organizations and much, much more.  This books was scanned from the original - re-formatted and cleaned up, sections where conventional film stripping edits were evidence of the past manufacturing flaws.  Reprinted with exact match, cinnamon colored cloth cover an embellished de-bossed gold front cover and spine, makes this example a show piece for the quality of reproduction services offered by Seeds Green Printing & Design.
