I’m sometimes accused of being a pessimist. Pessimists are those who make films which dumb down the audience. Those people think it’s not worth it to deal with real issues. There’s a certain cynicism in getting people’s money by seeming to soothe them. That’s pessimism. Everybody who gets angry or upset about things or who rails against injustice or whatever can only be an optimist or they would’t even talk about it. They’d just say it’s not worth it anyway. I don’t think you can bring about a lot of change. But I believe that a world without art would be much poorer. I don’t believe that a work of art changes society or an individual. But I do believe that the sum total helps make a more bearable world.
