Moderation Is Key: Moderating Debates for Student Org Elections

The US Presidential Election isn’t the only election that haunts us student affairs professionals - Student Org Elections can be just as bad sometimes. That’s why Natalie and I present to you this week’s #StudentAffairsSideHustle Election Edition. 

We recommend serving as a moderator for debates during student org elections. It allows you to ask the questions and drive campus dialogue to the real issues, i.e. North Campus. You can call the candidates out when they fail to answer the question. Channel your inner Elaine Quijano. (Shoutout to our girl for keeping them on track!)

We get the perks of ensuring that students participate in civil discourse and can call them out for when they become just shady. This will probably will be even more needed after the election as we deal with the aftermath from our more political student orgs. 

The side hustle comes into play because you can charge for your services. Charge the student orgs by the hour and make crazy demands - a green room stocked with your favorite food for dinner if you’re staying late (Order the steak and eat cake)! Also, if elections are happening in the spring then FLSA will be in effect, which means you could potentially double dip for this one (charge the student org and then get paid for overtime if it falls within your job duties).

Trick or Treat:

So this week’s #StudentAffairsSideHustle has a Halloween twist. Natalie and I suggest dressing up for Halloween and competing in costume contests to win prizes and/or money. It’s a great way to have fun and most of the time you can find all you need in your closet or at your local Goodwill (low amount of capital needed for this one). 

The other cool thing about this is you can actually attend parties that students might be hosting or attending to infiltrate and make sure that they are making responsible decisions. On the plus side if you’re costume is good enough they might not even know it’s you. Think of it as a way to make more money and provide more safety for your students.

Theory to Practice:

So this week’s #StudentsSideHustle comes from a recent trip Natalie took to #NOLA, and it’s a great way to put theory to practice. 

So the backstory … A few weeks ago Natalie took a trip to NOLA where she signed up to take a tour of an old graveyard. It turns out that the original tour guide of the graveyard was the caretaker. He just started giving tours and made up stories while taking money from people. One of the ways he made money was by telling people if they put three X’s on one of the grave’s vases and placed money they could make a wish. However, in order for that wish to come true you would have to return a year later and circle your X’s while depositing more money into the vase. He ended up pocketing all of the money and made a fortune. 

Here is our side hustle recommendation. Start giving your own campus tours. You can make up awesome and fascinating stories about the school. With Halloween so close we also thought it could be a great time to make up scary stories about your campus (a great outlet for our creative colleagues). You can also just setup shop in an old cemetery if you want to escape campus and make some extra cash after hours. 

Finally, the best thing about this side hustle is it puts theory to practice. Remember learning about Baxter Magolda’s Epistemological Reflection Model, well according to Baxter Magolda students develop through multiple stages of how they know what they know. If they are in the earlier stage they tend not to questions authority figures and therefore believe what they are told. In this case, incoming students won’t question your stories. 

My theory teacher would be so proud!

Every Day I’m Uberin’

So for your first #studentaffairssidehustle Natalie and I bring you one of our favorites - Ubering.

While you could go out and be even more entrepreneurial, we advise against starting your own company (it takes way too much up front capital). All you need for Uber is a car (some requirements on year and model), insurance, registration, and a few other things depending on your location. Check with your local government to make sure Uber is legal. Also, it might seem very sketchy if you just create your own company. So, go with a well known company like Uber. It’s super simple and easy to signup. I’m (Shane) already an Uber driver. 

The best part about this side hustle is that it allows for more opportunities to engage our students. We believe it could be easy to give students rides as they are going out for the evening and to chat with them along the way about responsible and healthy behaviors. Also, if you provide transportation for them after their night out you could perform a post-assessment to see how well your chat served as an intervention (or your presence alone) in the risky behaviors.
