After appearing on the competition show K-Pop Star and finishing third, Jung Sehyun was signed to BC Entertainment as a solo artist. Her sweet voice had earned her many fans who eagerly awaited her debut as a signed artist. They didn’t have to wait too long, as she debuted within the same year and the song and album received positive reviews.
Known for her pleasant vocals and sweet image, she’s been bestowed with a lovable little sister image to her fans, as BC Entertainment’s way of marketing a stark contrast to the other female soloist under their agency. She’s done a great job of upkeeping that image and hasn’t been involved in a single scandal since entering the public eye.
Since debut, Sehyun has ventured into the world of OSTs and has even started writing her own music with recent releases, earning her respect even outside of the mainstream audience.
Sad Song (September 10, 2012) [I’m Here]
sehyun’s debut song, sad song received an all-kill on real time charts, after anticipation from her fans from bc’s announcement that the fifteen-year-old at that time would be releasing a mini-album months after she had won third place on kpop star season one.
the young girl had immediately been delved into the world of fame, and after this there had been no way out.
A Good Boy (June 17, 2013) [A Good Girl]
her first comeback after her successful debut the previous year, a good boy was bc establishing the little sister concept onto sehyun, deciding that she would be the one making a stark contrast to celine and yuddy.
it did relatively okay on charts, but it was nothing compared to how sad song had performed.
personally, it’s sehyun’s least favourite song to date.
Shouldn’t Have (May 20, 2015)
sehyun’s most successful single to date, this was sehyun’s very first self-composed song, written after her rejection by someone she had fallen for.
bc had released it with no particularly high hopes, but it had unexpectedly singlehandedly gotten first place on all charts for months straight, beating out other chart monsters like knight and decipher.
despite it originally having meant to be an unpromoted track, bc had sent her out for promotions after seeing it do so well on the charts. it’d been a running joke around bc at that time that shouldn’t have shouldn’t have done so well on the charts. (ha ha ha) (get it)
sehyun thinks it’s bittersweet that this track of all songs had done so unpredictably well, since she can’t help but find it funny that a breakup song was the one that people had liked the most.
she had enlisted the help of a fellow male rapper to feature in this song, and that same guy is one of the few people who know who sehyun had written the song about.
after shouldn’t have’s success the previous year, sehyun decided to venture forth and release another self-composed song of her own, seeing how bc wasn’t intending on giving her any work to do.
so-so had been a sort of response to shouldn’t have, to show off that she’d gotten over the guy who she’d written the song about. it had done extremely well on the charts again, dominating the charts and receiving another all-kill, beating out contestants such as wish.
Just Because (December 2, 2016)
just because was a duet between her and another boy group member, released during the christmas season.
it hadn’t been penned by her herself, but perhaps bc had finally seen the rising singer’s popularity and allowed her to release another song instead of staying in the dungeon all year long.
it had done reasonably well on the charts, though it hadn’t been as popular as shouldn’t have or so-so (which sehyun secretly felt an immense feeling of pride about, since those songs had been the ones she’d personally composed herself.)
Sweet Lies (May 29, 2017) [Bittersweet]
after four years of staying in the attic of bc, sehyun finally made a comeback with her third mini-album bittersweet, and her title song sweet lies.
she’d written almost all the songs in the album herself, over the past few years, and it’d featured a few other artists, but while it still did well, she didn’t manage to get an all-kill, instead attaining #1 on all charts except melon and mnet.
for now, sehyun isn’t really sure when’ll be the next time she makes a comeback, considering how bc typically doesn’t hand her schedules unless she goes to seek for them herself.
(which makes her really bitter when she sees how busy knight and wish are, especially with the latter now that she’s writing most of her songs herself.)
she’s also hoping that bc’ll let her go into darker concepts and not just stick with the whole sad lovesick song thing she’s been doing the past few years.
