in regards to the ch118 reveal that tanizaki knows something about naomi's real family ... so i guess we're going to get a real tanizaki backstory soon ( hopefully ) but until i see more of the full picture, i plan to just continue on as a i have been. i probably won't lean too heavily into my backstory headcanon now that its looking like it missed the mark. but if whatever canon has to offer doesn't mesh with my portrayal i'll go canon divergent & stick to my personal backstory headcanons. but i have faith that asagiri will come up with something i'll enjoy.

Raindrops began to fall from above,  first in a light pitter - patter against the shingles of the apartment,  then in a torrential downpour that generously filled the gutters   &   the sewers.   Jun'ichirou casted a melancholy glance at the weeping sky,  then towards the picnic basket he had prepared,  rich with all her favorite foods,  like offerings.   It felt like a moot point,  now,  the date he had planned was as good as washed away in the rain.   How terrible of the universe to arrange it so   ;   if he had the power to,  he would chase away the stormclouds   &   abduct the sun,  keep it prisoner at the apex of the sky so that he could make her happy.   Unfortunately,  Jun'ichirou had no such ability,  slave to the whimsy of the weather as any.

"  I'm so sorry,  the weather report didn't say anything about this storm.  "   he apologized,  contrite,  assuming all fault for the mishap.   The picnic basket hung limply from his elbow,  offensive in how useless it now seemed to be.   The food was still fresh however,  cooked by hand mere hours prior to the time agreed upon,  &   it seemed wasteful to do nothing with it all.   Lightning crackled overhead,  divine wrath smiting the earth in the form of beasts,  as all the legends say   ──   an idea struck,  like thunder.   Jun'ichirou turned to his partner,  displaying a demure smile,   "  Would it be alright if we still had our picnic ?   We can sit inside  &  watch the storm from the windows while we eat.  "

"   his tenor wobbled,  like a newborn fawn,  his stature not much better.   Hands clasped tightly to his heart,  he casted a wary glance left  &  right,  as if anticipating a spectre of the haunted attraction to jump out at him right away.   It was a pointless inquiry,  anyways,  there was no choice in the matter whether or not they'd venture within the house of horrors.   Such was his job,  after all,  detective work cared naught for the place or occasion in which it called.   Still,  what inconsiderate person allowed themselves to be murdered in a haunted house,  of all places ?   Did they not take into consideration the entirely justified fears of the private investigators hired to smoke out their killer, before they were stabbed from behind ?   Jun'ichirou would never dare to step one foot inside such a terrible,  no - good place otherwise.   

He felt a kindred spirit within his partner in this respect,  but for this specific scenario the detective really could have appreciated Kenji - kun's childlike naiveté,  or Yosano - san's easy confidence,  or Kyouka - chan's poker face a lot more.   Really,  anyone else could have been a pillar of dependability,  someone Tanizaki could cling to the elbow of like a teenage girl in a romantic comedy.   " It's not too late to   ...   turn around and double check if Rampo - san can come back in time to pick up this case ?   I'm sure he would have it solved in a jiffy. "
