I feel like I should make a post about this because it’s not something that’s very well-known, and that Americans in particular may need to know about given the uncertain state of our healthcare system at the moment. I’ve wanted to write this out for a while, It’s kind of a long post, so sorry about that!
If you have an emergency and have to go to the hospital, you’ll owe the hospital a lot of money. (I got into a car wreck and broke my ankle and my arm. My hospital bill was around $20,000)
You’ll also owe the ambulance provider, if you need one. (My ambulance bill was about $800)
You may get separate bills from the anesthesiologist or surgeon. (My anesthesiologist bill was $1,700)
You may need follow-up appointments. (My orthopedic surgeon billed me for the appointments and his surgery together and it was about $1,000)
You’ve also got to pay for medical equipment you need afterward, like crutches or a walking boot. (Mine cost about $75)
Altogether, I ended up with almost $24,000 in medical debt from one car accident. That’s a really scary number for someone like me who makes $10/hr at a 12 hour a week job.
I got my debt down to $1075 by making some phone calls and submitting some paperwork.
The first thing I did was contact the hospital. They don’t make it easy to find, but many hospitals (perhaps most hospitals?) have financial assistance programs for people who can’t afford medical bills. I don’t make a lot of money, and I have bills to pay, so they were able to help me. I called the billing department and asked if they had any assistance programs for low income people who can’t pay their bills. I had to call multiple times, and I got transferred in circles by people who didn’t know what I was talking about. Finally, I got an appointment with someone in “Eligibility Services” (I don’t know what other hospitals call it, if it’s something different). I had to bring my pay stubs and copies of all of my bills. When I got to the hospital for the appointment, nobody knew what I was talking about so I had to wander a little to find where I needed to go. I spoke with the guy in Eligibility Services, and I waited for a decision on how much of the bill they would forgive. A month later, I got a call telling me it was totally forgiven.
I did the same thing for my ambulance bill and my anesthesiologist, but the process was a LOT easier. I just had to mail some paperwork and it was totally forgiven.
I didn’t bother with the medical equipment suppliers, since the bills came from separate companies and I didn’t feel like going through the process twice for $75. I was assured at the hospital that they had similar programs for debt forgiveness, so I could have probably avoided paying that too.
The only thing I couldn’t get taken care of was the surgeon/follow-up appointment cost, but they were able to put me on a no-interest payment plan.
Medical debt is scary because it’s something that can come from stuff that’s already really scary. I didn’t need the burden of $24,000 in debt on top of trying to get around on a crutch with a broken arm (it’s not easy, believe me!).. but I can’t imagine what it would be like with a bigger debt or a more severe medical emergency. I see lots of people in even worse trouble than I was in, both financially and medically. Please know that there are options for you when that GoFundMe doesn’t do enough. Even if your income is higher than mine, it’s worth a shot even for partial debt forgiveness.
I am about 900% sure there are people who don`the know this.
PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU LIVE IN AMERICA AND HAVE MEDICAL BILLS
I had to do this once as well and I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that this is true.
Get in contact with the hospital. Don’t just…sit there and let the anxiety grow and panic and then ignore it in an effort to find peace.
Yeah, I can confirm this. My dad and I have done this a ton of times because we’re super poor. Even if they won’t knock it down to zero, anything helps. Be patient and appeal to their empathy. If you can’t pay however much they knocked it down to, there’s likely a way to appeal it to see if they’ll knock it down more.
You may also be billed separately by the radiologist
I thought my big hospital bill was 100% paid off bc they said My account balance was zero but 2 years later I got a letter from collections saying I owed the radiology company $200 for “reading fees” bc they bill separately from the hospital and never fkn got in contact w me regarding the debt til it went to collections

"Bisexuality is defined by an attraction to two or more genders" Bi means two, though. More than two would be polysexual, while all genders or regardless of gender would be pansexual.
Everyone who tries to tell me what bisexuality means personally owes me and all of my followers $1.

We celebrate and affirm the diversity of identity and expression regardless of labels.”
http://bisexual.org/am-i-bi/ (American Institute of Bisexuality)“A bi person has the capacity for romantic and/or sexual attraction to more than one gender.”
http://www.bisexualindex.org.uk/index.php/AmIBisexual (Bisexual Index: UK)“This is how we define it: A bisexual is someone who is attracted to more than one gender. You might care about the gender of your partner a lot, a little, or not at all – but their gender doesn’t prevent you from being attracted to them.”

Individuals may experience this attraction in differing ways and degrees over their lifetime.”

“bisexuality is, broadly speaking, the attraction to two or more genders. bisexuality is not inherently or transphobic or exclusive of non binary genders—note that there are both binary and non-binary trans people who identify as bisexual. it is possible for bisexuals to be attracted to be attracted to anywhere from two to an infinite number of genders. many times, bisexuals will define their own sexuality as the attraction to both similar and different genders (which encompasses all genders). however, it is important to remember that bisexuals can be attracted to multiple genders without being attracted to people of their own gender. for example, an agender bi person may be attracted to women, bigender, and genderfluid people, or a bi woman might be attracted to men and agender people…..”

“bisexual- sexually attracted to your same/similar gender and other gender(s), OR sexually attracted to 2 or more genders. Some bisexuals feel that they experience different kinds or degrees of attraction to different genders/gender presentations.”

“Bi: attracted to two or more genders. Some people will define it as “attracted to similar and different genders,” but this is slightly less inclusive than the above definition. I’m of the mind that “similar and different” evolved to satisfy bi=2 prescriptivists, but they are insatiable and forever gross.”
http://thesunnysideofbeingbi.tumblr.com/basics
“…being bi does not reinforce the gender binary. And some bi people are only attracted to men and women–and that’s ok! However, bi is not defined as the attraction to men and women, or two genders. It can be for an individual, but not for our entire community. That definition is not only false, but harmful. (This is not to imply that bi people can’t be transphobic!)
This also means that you don’t have to be sexually attracted to people to be bi. There are so many different kinds of attraction, and to just focus on bisexuality would be excluding a lot of people (e.g. being biromantic).”

Other things worth the read about the definition of bisexuality:
Bisexual Manifesto from 1990:
http://binetusa.blogspot.com/2014/01/1990-bi-manifesto.html
“We are tired of being analyzed, defined and represented by people other than ourselves, or worse yet, not considered at all. We are frustrated by the imposed isolation and invisibility that comes from being told or expected to choose either a homosexual or heterosexual identity.
Monosexuality is a heterosexist dictate used to oppress homosexuals and to negate the validity of bisexuality.
Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity. Do not assume that bisexuality is binary or duogamous in nature: that we have “two” sides or that we must be involved simultaneously with both genders to be fulfilled human beings. In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders. Do not mistake our fluidity for confusion, irresponsibility, or an inability to commit. Do not equate promiscuity, infidelity, or unsafe sexual behavior with bisexuality. Those are human traits that cross all sexual orientations. Nothing should be assumed about anyone’s sexuality, including your own.
We are angered by those who refuse to accept our existence; our issues; our contributions; our alliances; our voice. It is time for the bisexual voice to be heard“

”Defining bisexuality, just like defining any identity label, can be complicated and controversial. My definition of the label “bisexual” is informed by the work of The Bisexual Organizing Project. It includes people who use labels such as “bisexual,” “non-monosexual,” “persexual,” “omnisexual,” “ambisexual,” “pansexual,” “queer” or any other term that people use to identify themselves as individuals who are emotionally, romantically or physically attracted to people of more than one sex, gender or gender identity. I also recognize that not everyone chooses to adopt a label to describe their sexual orientation, and I also include non-labeling people who see themselves as part of a queer, non-monosexual or bisexual community under my definition of “bisexual.”“

@profeminist please read this, I’m tired of constantly explaining.
I see a lot of posts saying bisexuality has only recently been ‘redefined’ to include nonbinary folk, so I want to be clear:
The bi community has been inclusive of trans-including nonbinary-people for decades.
Bi organizations have defined bisexuality as attraction to more than one gender or attraction to the same and other genders since at least the 90s, well before mainstream society (and many parts of cis gay society) began to even consider that trans people might be anything other than, at best, a punchline.
From the Bisexual Manifesto, published in 1990 in the bi magazine Anything That Moves:
“Bisexuality is a whole, fluid identity. Do not assume that bisexuality is binary or duogamous in nature: that we have “two” sides or that we must be involved simultaneously with both genders to be fulfilled human beings. In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders.”
Bisexuality has been inclusive of nonbinary people for decades.
The idea that it hasn’t been is a myth, created by a misinformation campaign starting in the late 2000s. We were constantly harassed for our ‘transphobic’ sexuality, online and off. This was even encouraged by major ‘LGBTQ’ orgs. It lead to many bi activists quitting and uncountable suicide attempts within the community. An already largely-closeted community was constantly silenced, supposedly in the name of ‘trans inclusion’, by people, usually cis, who just wanted an excuse to hate us and seem ‘progressive’.
The myth also comes from the fact so-called ‘LGBTQ’ orgs, who were and are mostly run by cis gay and straight folk, have only recently begun to update their definitions. Until recently, these orgs constantly excluded bi and trans folk, in name and in deed, often actively encouraging discrimination.
But, since these orgs are now ‘LGBTQ’ and, in fairness, have started to include bi and trans folk more, they are assumed to have always been ‘the voice of the LGBTQ community’. This is not the case. They ignored bi activists for years and even now often just tokenize us.
tl;dr Bisexuals have been inclusive of nonbinary people for decades, and many of us are nonbinary. It’s just that now, more people are listening to us.
@profeminist a history on how claiming ‘bi is only two genders’ is extremely biphobic and especially harms bi trans folk
100 years ago “pansexual” referred to Freudian bullshit and “ the theory that all human behavior is based on sexuality ” ,
I just wanna point this out, because folks insist that the word “bisexual” can never be reinvented, and think “pansexual” is some sleek new word which doesn’t have a weird history.
(▰˘◡˘▰)
Since it’s 2018 and y’all still want to scream ‘bi means two!’ constantly, here’s a word you should learn the definition of: etymological fallacy.
Bisexuality=attraction to more than one gender.
Here’s a post with more on that, with multiple links to actual bi orgs, many that have been around for decades.
No, that doesn’t ‘make pan and ply meaningless’ any more than there being over 50 words like ‘pretty’ and ‘beautiful’ that mean similar but not exactly the same things make those words ‘meaningless’.
Bisexuality has been inclusive of nonbinary folk since at least the 90s. Read the 1990 Bisexual Manifesto, which contains the line “In fact, don’t assume that there are only two genders.”
Here’s a video by a bi trans person on how bisexuality is inclusive of nonbinary genders. Here’s a history on how claiming bi means ‘two genders’ has been used to harass bi folk, especially bi trans folk.
Personal note: As a nonbinary bi person, I felt included in the bi community long before the rest of society even considered any trans folk at all were more than just ‘monsters.’ Also, the trans flag was literally inspired by the bi flag.
My best friend is bi and nonbinary. So is my life partner. So is my cousin. So are countless people I love. When you tell us we’re ‘wrong’ about our sexuality, you aren’t ‘helping’ nonbinary folk, and you aren’t ‘helping’ pan and ply folk, as you don’t need to tear down a sexuality to uplift another, and doing so is completely counter productive. Solidarity > bullshit infighting.
Respect what label(s) a person uses for themself, if any. I’m bisexual and nonbinary, and telling me I’m not over and over won’t change that.
mood of the month, ladies!!

“Uh why do you need a ‘bi trans alliance’, your sexuality is TMI!”
Just on the subject of healthcare (which is one of many):
42% of bi trans people report having a disability, compared to 34% of gay and lesbian transgender people and 22% of straight transgender people.
16% of bi people reported not getting needed medical care in the past year due to cost, compared to 12% of gay and lesbian and 8% of straight people. Among bi trans people, the percentage doubles.
As of 2017, 19% of bi people still lacked insurance, compared to 6% of gay men and 4% of lesbians.

Eight months after Hurricane Maria, 14,500 in Puerto Rico don't have power.
Sunday marked eight months since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, and about 14,500 people there still don’t have electricity.
Also, according to a Harvard Study, Hurricane Maria killed more than 4,600 people, not 64. That’s more than 70 times the official estimate.
The researchers said the number was conservative and that the death toll likely exceeded 5,000. Many deaths were due in part to power outages that caused loss of medical and other services.
Hurricane season starts in 10 days.
