you are required to be and act anti-racist
thinking and hoping you're not racist isn't enough. i am talking specifically and especially to white trans people whose political ideology and differing axis of oppression makes them feel immune to racially motivated missteps and behaviors
and im suggesting firmly and with pain in my heart that apologies must start and end with "i'm so sorry to have done this. i recognize what was done and will work to do better." and at no point must your apology be accepted in order to continue a working relationship/comradeship/solidarity, at no point does your continued ":( i just feel so bad" matter to me or any other person of color
you have to process your feelings about doing a racism separate from the persons or people you did the racism to. you do not offload the labor to the affronted. you do not assert what your "intent" was repeatedly or ask for help from the hurt
This is a rose bush. Roses are known as easy to kill and delicate. Let me tell you about this rose bush. It was cut down to literally just a stick sticking out of the ground last summer (the plan was to get rid of it sometime later and replace it with something that wouldnt interfere with the gate). After that, we had the toughest winter in like 10 years where I live. And this spring it grew definitely well over 100 little rose buds that are now either blooming or about to bloom. If a delicate rose can bounce back to THIS extent, so can you, so don't consider anything a lost cause. Not when this rose came back to life.
Push/pull. Everything is heavy lately. But look at this happy peach đ
Everything is so rushed. People in their twenties complaining about being old, sped up songs, sped up videos, too many things to do in such a short time. We have lost the art of lingering.
Rain and coffee ââ¨
look. hereâs the thing. If you have a relative or family friend or some such who does a craft/hobby/skill that youâve âalways wanted to learnâ you should ask them about it. Your grandma does embroidery and you want to learn? Sit down one day, or call her, or write a letter, or something, and say âI am interested in learning this craft.â Thereâs basically zero chance that Uncle Francis is gonna refuse to teach you about his model ships. Grandma is THRILLED to show you her quilting. Ms Barbara from the church bake sale WILL teach you how to make the fudge that made her second husband propose.
your friends and contemporaries are also a tremendous resource, and you should ask them too! But thereâs just no replacement for the expertise of someone who has been knitting for sixty years. Part of this, also, is that older crafters can often give you materials to help you start, and your broke millennial friends usually canât. My mom has more wool than she will ever use in her life, and she knows it. When one of my friends wanted to start knitting, my mom just gave her this gorgeous silver handspun yarn sheâd made but wasnât attached to. Yarn like that is expensive! Handspun yarn from someone who has been spinning for thirty years doesnât often happen to beginners! And starting with good materials is better than starting with bad, because it helps you develop taste and a sense of quality more quickly.
Experienced crafters are often able to help you avoid learning bad or damaging habitsâas a teenager, my sewing teacher spent a lot of time teaching me how to do things so that I didnât get repetitive stress injuries (like she did). Theyâre going to be able to lend you books, send you ancient angelfire html pages with the most exacting instructions on earth, show you the good places to get crafting supplies that arenât am*zon.
But you have to ask. Do not wait until these people are dead, and then say âI wish I knew.â You have to do it now, while you can.

Rewatching Lucifer (for the millionth time) and thinking about how in the first episode when Lucifer thinks Jimmy Barnes is dead and he gets upset because he cant punish him Chloe tells him âDonât worry, Iâm sure where heâs going the pains coming.â I love this little line so much because Chloe, who we know is an atheist at this point and still thinks Lucifer is a method actor, picks up on the fact that Lucifer believes in Heaven and Hell beyond just the âactâ he puts up and tries to comfort/calm him the best she can in the moment.
Set behavioral goals! It is such a game changer. Instead of setting goals that you can not 100% control, for example âI want to weigh XXX amountâ set behavioral goals such as âI want to exercise for at least 30 min 4 days out of the weekâ.
You have so much more control over your behavior/actions which means it will be easier to maintain and thus helping potentially reaching your end goal. Focus on creating goals related to behavior change that include action steps!
