just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.

Birds Nesting in Cliffs, c.2007

Born in 1943, Illuitok was an Inuit master sculptor from Kugaaruk. She created detailed, delicate ivory/bone carvings that mostly represented hunting or nature scenes. Illuitok often worked with found materials that she then shaped into works of art. She passed away in 2012.

The above work shows birds nesting and is made of whale bone and ivory. Notice the little detail on the bottom right of a polar bear hunting some seals.

the celestial monarch (hypothymis coelestis) is a small passerine bird endemic to the philippines. they prefer lowland forest habitats, with logging being a primary threat to the species & their habitat. they are overall turquoise, with a white belly and a darker indigo chest and neck. females are slightly smaller than males, and have less intense coloration and shorter crests. males are known to raise their crest when agitated or excited, often seen in response to hearing other males’ calls or feeling threatened by a predator. celestial monarchs are members of the ‘monarch flycatcher’ (monarchidae) family and, like others of this family, lead a primarily insectivorous lifestyle. they are social birds often observed in mixed-species flocks including other monarch species as other similarly sized birds.
