i know i benefit from white privilege, i'm not claiming i don't. but it's hard not to feel objectified when my race is almost always the first thing people ask me about.
i just wish i knew what people see when they look at me. the fact that it varies from person to person is what i struggle with most.

it's always easy for me to connect with the mothers at the shelter, partly because i'm most comfortable interacting with people older than me, but also because i can do it through their children. after all, you'd have to trust someone pretty well to let them take care of your offspring.
its harder with the other women, though. i mean it's completely justifiable to be untrustworthy when life brings you to the greenhouse shelter, and you're surrounded by strangers in an uncomfortable environment. i just wish they could see me as an ally. i know there's no way i can convince them, they have to decide that for themselves. it's just hard not to take these interactions personally sometimes...
western avenue. it used to mark the edge of town, but now it barely marks the west side. it may not be the most scenic road in chicago, definitely not the most maintained. it doesn't run along the lake or go through many of the affluent neighborhoods. there's just something about western though, 'character' or some bullshit like that. 23.5 miles of continuous asphalt transcend the notion of a fiercely segregated city. take a quick ride on the 49 and within minutes you're aware of what a beautifully diverse metropolis it really is. i like that it goes through many of what some call "rough" neighborhoods. i think it paints a more accurate portrayal of this working class city than lake shore drive ever will. taking this street instantly sparks my childhood nostalgia. i get taken back to a time before my mom married and we flocked to the suburbs, a time when this was the only home i knew. it never seemed dirty or "ghetto" to me, it was just a really big street that could pretty much take me wherever i needed to go. this is the third time in my life i've lived just off western avenue, and no matter where i go in the world and in life there will always be a place for me riding down chicago's longest street.

It makes me very sad that people always believe my abusers rather than me. It makes me feel powerless and i feel like I’ll never be listened to. I’m scared that I’ll be even more left out and even worse they’ll ask me to prove that it happened. How can i prove you stumbled into my room at 2/3am and tried to get in my bed? How can i prove that behind closed doors you wouldn’t listen to my “no”

I am so, so sorry. I find this feeling SO familiar and I know many of my followers do, too. Many people find that their abusers (who are usually more powerful) are believed while they, the innocent victims are questioned.
There is no way to prove most rapes. No one should be asking you for proof. As I once said:

Had a dream Matt and I broke up last night.
What was especially weird was that the familiar loneliness wasn't as unsettling as I thought it would be.
sometimes i look at photos of myself from a few years back and i literally can't believe how thin i was. and how not-thin i thought i was.
it makes me feel sick to think of how many hours i used to spend working out and obsessing over what i ate just because i wanted to feel some sense of control in my life. my body was all i could change.
i think the key to body-positivity (for me) is just to look at all the things i have now that i didn't back then: a round butt, boobs, color in my face... but also an overall desire to achieve what's healthy for me. i'm not going to force myself to eat because i think i'm getting judged, but i'm also not going to judge myself for eating more on some days. the more and more i see what i have now that i didn't have back then, the more i can learn to love the mirror.

I’ve been told by some people who identify themselves as radical “feminists” that I have no place in feminism. No right tagging posts about my child trafficking memories as “feminist,” and no business in both telling my story and identifying as a feminist at the same time.
They tell me that my story is the stereotype that makes all feminists look bad: I was raped by my father, I was sold as a child prostitute, now I’m depressed and my life is destroyed. They don’t want to make us all look like man-haters (and then, on a sidenote many post hatespeech excluding trans and gender-fluid people from participating in feminism).
To them I say, don’t be so quick to sweep me under the rug. It’s a fair bet that what I survived will be a better advertisement for why we need feminism than anything you’ll ever contribute to the topic.
I NEED FEMINISM BECAUSE THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE TRYING TO EXCLUDE ME FROM IT.
