An important guide for all my Michigan and other northern living folks for this winter
You also want to keep some supplies in your car. Some water, some non-perishable food what you can eat cold. I keep a hatchet in my car, cause they are an amazingly useful tool.
Also, in order to stay hydrated. NEVER EAT SNOW. It lowers your core body temperature, and also actually dehydrates you. Melt it first. Doesn’t matter if it’s ice water, so long as it’s water.
Reblogging for my southern peeps
You can skip starting a tire fire but if you’re going to use snow to insulate a car, you also HAVE to keep the exhaust clear of snow, as it can make carbon monoxide back up into the cabin and choke you if you don’t. Beyond that, stay off the road as much as possible and if you must drive only use main roads that are well traveled. Avoid side streets and rural highways. Avoid any minimum maintenance road. Keep in mind driving in heavy snow is different than driving on ice and going slow in deep snow will lead to you getting stuck. Slow on open ice, but keep moving in deep snow as much as you can so you don’t lose momentum. It’s very hard to get it back.
Also- keep kitty litter or sand in your trunk for extra traction. It actually does help in sticky situations.
