i love blood river in a way that is unrivaled by any actual danmei somehow because even though censored cdrama adaptations of danmei are ambiguous enough to pique my interest (sue me i want that relationship undefinable and nameless) I think there is a very particular and slightly hilarious quality to a queer relationship written by a straight man who does not actually have any idea he has written a queer relationship.

90% of the cdrama is fancy CGI fight scenes of swords falling from the sky and there's a perfunctory female love interest who falls into a pit with the main character but throughout it all su muyu demonstrates a spectacular lack of interest towards anything other than 'being a good person' and changhe. it consistently feels like neither the author nor the characters have any actual investment in muyu being straight beyond 'having a girlfriend' being a hallmark trait of Very Cool Heroes that the author tacked onto his protagonist.

i've met so many people who've only watched the drama who seem to be under the impression that it is word-of-honor flavored censorshipped danmei when in reality the novel is just Like That. It's not the untamed, it's naruto. The author is a 'straight man' who genuinely thinks he has written a pure action novel with bromance in it as changhe sacrifices his life/morals/freedom/life again for muyu for the nth time and muyu stares sadly into the distance at the mention of changhe's name. 'no one knows su changhe better than me' repeated multiple times through the story is unironically supposed to be an expression of regular affection. idk I think it adds a little something and from the right angle it also makes the entire show exponentially funnier.

I want a painstakingly realistic christmas date in Japan, where Kakashi and Obito both had to work overtime during christmas night, then decided to meet up for dinner Kakashi wants to get some pizza, but Obito insists that christmas means fried chicken! 🍗🍗🍗
